No—Microsoft’s reviewed documentation does not confirm that VBScript became optional in Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft has deprecated VBScript and describes a future path in which it becomes a Feature on Demand (FoD) before eventual retirement. Microsoft says the FoD will initially be preinstalled, but its guidance does not give a date for optionalization or removal.
What Microsoft has announced about VBScript
Deprecation is not the same as immediate removal. Microsoft’s deprecated-features list identifies VBScript as deprecated and describes a FoD stage before removal. Microsoft’s VBScript resource page puts the sequence plainly: “VBScript will be available as a feature on demand before being retired in future Windows releases.”
Microsoft says the FoD will initially be preinstalled so customers can continue using VBScript while preparing for its retirement. Preinstalled does not mean permanently built into Windows: it describes the initial FoD arrangement, not a dated promise about when the capability will become optional or be removed.
Does Windows 11 24H2 make VBScript optional?
The reviewed Microsoft sources do not establish that VBScript became optional specifically in Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft’s February 8, 2024 announcement for Insider Preview Build 26052 said the build would display version 24H2. It does not say that VBScript became a FoD in that release, nor does it prove that a later FoD configuration shipped to all 24H2 users.

Accordingly, the headline claim that VBScript is already optional in Windows 11 24H2 is unconfirmed by these Microsoft pages. They also do not state a specific Windows release, update, or build for the transition.
What the published timeline does—and does not—say
- October 2023: Microsoft’s deprecated-features table records VBScript’s deprecation.
- February 8, 2024: Microsoft announced Insider Preview Build 26052 for the Canary and Dev channels and said it would display version 24H2. The announcement does not connect that build to VBScript optionalization.
- Future Windows releases: Microsoft says VBScript will be available as a FoD before retirement and that the FoD will initially be preinstalled. The reviewed guidance gives no dated milestone for either step.
The documented direction is clear; the release-level schedule is not. Microsoft’s reviewed pages provide neither a final removal date nor a dated deadline for when users must change their scripts.

What Windows administrators and script owners should do
If you maintain scripts or applications that may depend on VBScript, verify them on the exact Windows release and servicing level you manage. Do not infer availability from the 24H2 version label alone.

- Inventory dependencies: identify scripts, applications, and workflows that call or otherwise rely on VBScript.
- Check the managed system: verify whether the VBScript capability is present and enabled on the specific Windows installation and servicing level in question.
- Test actual workflows: confirm dependent scripts and applications behave as expected in that environment, rather than assuming that deprecation means they have stopped working.
- Plan against Microsoft’s stated lifecycle: account for a future FoD stage and eventual retirement, but do not assign a deadline or select a replacement on the basis of these pages; they provide neither a dated schedule nor a prescribed migration procedure.
