The June 30, 2025 headline about Yann Le Cun’s VivaTech remarks describes a proposed path to artificial superintelligence—not a claim that superintelligence already exists. Le Cun’s argument is that advanced machine intelligence will require predictive models of the physical world, the ability to reason about consequences, and action planning in ways that simply enlarging language models may not provide.
What Le Cun presented at VivaTech 2025
In its June 30, 2025 account, EE Times framed Le Cun’s remarks as a route toward “artificial superintelligence.” That wording belongs to the headline and reporting. It is not evidence that artificial superintelligence has been achieved, nor does it represent a settled technical definition.
The reported proposal centers on four capabilities:
- Predictive world models: an internal representation of how the physical world behaves.
- Physical-world understanding: knowledge learned from observation rather than only from written descriptions.
- Reasoning: evaluating possible states and consequences.
- Planning: selecting and executing sequences of actions that move toward a goal.
Le Cun summarized the planning idea to EE Times as: “The system can imagine the consequence of a sequence of actions.” The system would therefore evaluate possible futures before acting, rather than merely produce the next plausible token or response.

Why this is different from simply scaling language models
Large language models (LLMs) are trained primarily to predict tokens in text and other sequential data. Increasing model size, training data, and computing resources can improve language generation, coding, and many reasoning-like tasks. Le Cun has also acknowledged the usefulness of LLMs for work such as code generation. His objection is to treating language prediction alone as a complete route to human-level or beyond-human intelligence.
| Dimension | LLM-centered approach | Le Cun’s world-model route |
|---|---|---|
| Primary input | Language tokens and other sequences represented as tokens | Video and observations of the physical environment, potentially combined with other modalities |
| Target representation | Likely continuation of the sequence | Predicted representations of world states and how they change after actions |
| Core task | Generate text, code, or another output | Predict consequences, compare possible futures, and plan actions |
| Evidence discussed in the sources | Broad language and coding capabilities | Physical-reasoning benchmarks and a bounded robot-planning demonstration reported by Meta |
| Known limitations here | Text prediction does not by itself establish grounded physical understanding | Meta reports single-timescale operation and identifies hierarchical and multimodal modeling as unfinished work |
This is a difference in emphasis, not a claim that one architecture must replace the other. A practical advanced system could combine language models with visual, physical, and action-oriented modules.
How the proposed architecture works
Meta’s February 2022 explainer, “Yann LeCun on a vision to make AI systems learn and reason like animals and humans,” describes a modular autonomous-intelligence architecture. Its major components are:
Perception
Perception converts observations—such as images, video, or other sensor inputs—into information the rest of the system can use.

World model
The world model estimates missing information and predicts plausible future states, including states that could result from proposed actions. It is intended to capture regularities in the environment rather than memorize only surface correlations.
Cost module
A cost module evaluates the desirability or undesirability of predicted states. Those estimates provide the objective signals needed to compare plans.
Actor
The actor proposes actions or sequences of actions. The world model can then predict the consequences of those proposals, allowing the system to revise a plan before execution.
Short-term memory
Short-term memory retains recent observations, intermediate states, and decisions needed for an ongoing task.

Configurator
The configurator sets or changes the system’s objectives and operating configuration so that the modules can be organized for a particular task.
Meta says the design draws on cognitive science, neuroscience, control theory, reinforcement learning, traditional artificial intelligence, self-supervised learning, and joint-embedding architectures. Le Cun’s broader point is that animals learn substantial background knowledge through observation and relatively few task-specific interactions, rather than requiring every fact to be labeled explicitly.
What JEPA and V-JEPA 2 contribute
Le Cun’s joint-embedding predictive architecture (JEPA) predicts a representation of what is missing or what will happen, instead of reconstructing every pixel in an image or video. Predicting in representation space can focus learning on meaningful structure while avoiding the requirement to reproduce irrelevant visual detail.
Meta announced V-JEPA 2 on June 11, 2025. Meta describes it as a 1.2-billion-parameter video-trained model. According to Meta, its initial self-supervised pretraining used more than 1 million hours of internet video without action labels. A later action-conditioned phase, V-JEPA 2-AC, used less than 62 hours of robot videos to teach the model how actions relate to changing observations.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The important extension is action conditioning: the model does not only predict how a scene might evolve naturally; it also predicts how it may evolve after an imagined intervention. That gives a planner a way to test candidate actions internally before sending commands to a robot.
What Meta demonstrated with V-JEPA 2
Meta reported using a version of V-JEPA 2 for zero-shot robot planning in unfamiliar environments. The demonstration included reaching, grasping, and pick-and-place behaviors specified with goal images. “Zero-shot” in this context means the system was applied to new environments without task-specific examples for each individual scene.
This is a bounded research demonstration. It does not establish general-purpose household robotics, reliable autonomy in open-ended environments, or artificial superintelligence. The announcement reports Meta’s own research results; the figures and capability descriptions have not been presented here as independent verification.

Planning across multiple timescales
Meta says the released approach operates at a single timescale. Real tasks often require nested decisions: millisecond-level control, short-term movements, and longer-term plans. Meta lists hierarchical JEPA models as a direction for handling those levels together.

Multimodal grounding
Physical intelligence may require video, language, touch, proprioception, sound, and other signals. Meta identifies multimodal JEPA models as another area for future work, so V-JEPA 2 should not be treated as a complete multimodal world model.
Reliable action and uncertainty
A prediction can be plausible yet wrong in a way that causes a physical failure. A useful autonomous system must represent uncertainty, detect when its model is outside its experience, and recover safely when an action has an unexpected result. The cited announcement does not claim that these problems are solved.
Data and compute
Video pretraining and action-conditioned learning require substantial data and computation. Meta’s reported use of more than 1 million hours of internet video and less than 62 hours of robot video illustrates the different roles of broad passive observation and comparatively small amounts of action data; it is not a claim that those quantities are sufficient for general intelligence.
How long might the route take?
In an October 16, 2024 interview report, TechCrunch quoted Le Cun saying: “It’s going to take years before we can get everything here to work, if not a decade.” That is an attributed estimate, not a product schedule or delivery promise. The same report characterized world models as difficult and incomplete.

EE Times also reported Le Cun’s view that the term “AGI” does not accurately describe human intelligence, quoting him: “I am sorry to say, but human intelligence is not general at all.” His alternative terminology—advanced machine intelligence and artificial superintelligence—should therefore be read as his framing, not as a consensus taxonomy.
How to interpret the headline
- The headline refers to a June 2025 account of remarks at VivaTech.
- “Path to artificial superintelligence” describes a research direction, not an achieved capability.
- The proposal adds predictive physical-world modeling, consequence simulation, and planning to language-centered systems.
- V-JEPA 2 provides a specific video-model and robot-planning example, with clearly stated scope and open problems.
- Le Cun’s timeline was years and possibly a decade, with no firm date attached.
The Bottom Line
Le Cun’s proposal is to build intelligence around predictive world models that can simulate action consequences and plan in the physical world. Meta’s V-JEPA 2 is an early, limited demonstration of that idea—not proof that artificial superintelligence or general-purpose autonomous robots have arrived.
