Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS was postponed from 15 August to 29 August 2024 after the Ubuntu Release Team found several high-impact upgrade bugs. The two-week delay was intended to make upgrades from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS safer and more reliable, not to cancel the release.

What caused the delay?

On 12 August 2024, Ubuntu Release Team member Łukasz “sil2100” Zemczak announced that issues discovered while preparing 24.04.1 could significantly affect upgrades. The team moved the planned release date from Thursday, 15 August, to Thursday, 29 August, so it could improve the upgrade path from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 24.04 LTS.

The announcement did not identify every blocker, publish a failure rate, or quantify how many users were affected. It described the problems as “high-impact upgrade bugs” and framed the change as a reliability decision.

When was Ubuntu 24.04.1 released?

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS was released on 29 August 2024 for Desktop, Server, Cloud and supported Ubuntu flavors. It was a point release of the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS series, with refreshed installation images, security updates and corrections for high-severity bugs.

The delay was therefore temporary. Existing 24.04 LTS installations were not withdrawn; the milestone mainly improved installation media and the supported upgrade experience for users moving from the previous LTS.

What the postponement meant for Ubuntu 22.04 users

Ubuntu normally enables the graphical release-upgrade offer from the previous LTS when the first point release of the new LTS becomes available. As a result, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users generally had to wait for 24.04.1 before Update Manager presented the standard upgrade path.

After 24.04.1 shipped, Canonical said 22.04 users would be offered an automatic upgrade. Before starting, users should read the 24.04.1 release notes for known caveats and workarounds, make a current backup, install all pending 22.04 updates and verify that essential third-party software and hardware are supported.

Which fixes were included?

The 24.04.1 change list contains corrections across the upgrader, desktop, server and cloud stacks. The list is broader than the small set of issues that triggered the schedule change; the release notes do not establish that every listed fix independently caused the delay.

Should you upgrade immediately or wait?

For a supported Ubuntu 22.04 LTS desktop or server, 24.04.1 is the normal point at which the standard LTS-to-LTS upgrade becomes available. The choice still depends on whether reliability, hardware compatibility or access to newer software is most important.

Situation Practical choice Reason
Running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on a routine desktop or server Use the 24.04.1 upgrade offer after backups and checks The first point release is the designated, supported LTS upgrade milestone and includes upgrader safeguards.
Using TPM full-disk encryption, proprietary drivers or unusual storage Review release-note caveats and test before broad deployment Encryption, drivers and storage layouts can make upgrade behavior more sensitive.
Deploying many production systems Pilot the upgrade on representative hardware first A point release improves known issues but cannot guarantee identical results on every configuration.
Installing Ubuntu on a new machine Use 24.04.1 installation media It contains refreshed images and accumulated security and high-severity fixes, reducing post-install updates.
Needing maximum stability and no new features Remain on fully updated 22.04 LTS temporarily 22.04 remains a supported LTS, so there is no requirement to upgrade on the day 24.04.1 appears.

How to upgrade from 22.04 LTS after 24.04.1

  1. Install every available update in Software Updater, then restart if requested.
  2. Make a verified backup of personal data and configuration files. If the system is business-critical, record a tested rollback or recovery method.
  3. Check the 24.04.1 release notes for hardware, encryption, driver and application caveats relevant to your machine.
  4. Open Software Updater and select the prompt to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Follow the on-screen dependency and removal review carefully.
  5. Keep the computer connected to power and a reliable network until the process completes, then reboot and verify networking, graphics, encryption and required applications.

If the upgrade prompt is absent, confirm that the system is fully updated and that its release-upgrade policy is set to offer normal LTS releases. Administrators can also wait for the staged rollout or perform a tested command-line upgrade, but should not bypass a held-back offer blindly.

Coverage option Published horizon Qualification
Standard Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud and Core maintenance Five years; standard lifecycle listed through June 2029 Applies from the 24.04 LTS release series and is subject to Ubuntu’s component policies.
Remaining Ubuntu flavors Three years Stated in the 24.04.1 release announcement.
Ubuntu Pro Up to 10 years for more than 34,000 packages Optional Canonical subscription coverage; package eligibility and terms apply.
Ubuntu Pro with Legacy Support Potentially up to 12 years Optional add-on commitment, with commercial terms set by Canonical.

Bottom line

Ubuntu 24.04.1 was delayed by two weeks because the release team found upgrade bugs serious enough to risk an inadequate 22.04-to-24.04 experience. It arrived on 29 August 2024 with refreshed media and a wide set of fixes. For most 22.04 users, 24.04.1 is the appropriate LTS upgrade milestone; systems with encryption, specialized drivers or production workloads should still be backed up, checked against the release notes and tested in advance.
