The feature was announced on April 22, 2024; Audacity’s changelog now lists version 4.0.0, dated September 3, 2026, as current. Audacity’s 3.5 announcement and official changelog establish that release context.
What Audacity 3.5 cloud project saving does
Cloud saving sends an Audacity project to Audio.com rather than keeping the only working copy on your computer. Audacity described the feature as a way to work from different devices, share and collaborate, and restore previous versions if something goes wrong. In the release announcement, Audacity said: “This allows you to work from any device, share & collaborate with others and restore previous versions if something went wrong.” Read the announcement.
This is cloud storage and sharing support, not a documented promise of simultaneous live co-editing. The official guidance does not specify real-time editing controls or how conflicting edits are resolved, so do not assume that multiple people can edit the same project at once without coordination.
How to save an Audacity project to Audio.com
- Open the project in Audacity and choose File > Save to Cloud.
- Link an Audio.com account when prompted. Cloud saving requires that account and an internet connection.
- Enter a project name and start the save. Audacity uploads the project in the background, so the transfer can continue while you work.
- On the first cloud save, choose how often Audacity should create a mixdown for an Audio.com preview. If you do not intend to collaborate, Audacity Support says you may not need preview mixdowns.
You can change the mixdown preference later under Edit > Preferences > Cloud. See Audacity Support’s saving and exporting instructions.

Cloud projects, local projects, exports, and backups are different
An Audacity project is the editable work: it preserves the project structure needed to continue editing. An export is a separate playback file, such as an MP3 or WAV. Exporting a song or recording does not create a substitute editable project backup. Audacity’s guidance on saving and exporting explains the distinction.
Format details depend on the Audacity version. The current manual says Audacity 4 saves local projects in .aup4 format and opens projects created in Audacity 3 as .aup3 files. Those are local project formats; they are not audio exports. See the manual’s project-saving guide.

Choosing between cloud and local storage
| Workflow | Useful for | Requirements and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Audio.com cloud project | Access across devices, sharing and collaboration support, and recovery of previous versions | Requires an Audio.com account and internet access; the reviewed guidance does not describe simultaneous editing or conflict handling. |
| Local project on the computer | Keeping the active editable project on suitable working storage | Audacity Support advises against working directly from external drives, USB sticks, or network storage because editing and recording need fast, uninterrupted access. |
| Separate backup copy | Maintaining another copy in case the device holding the active project is lost or fails | The manual recommends regular backups on one or two devices other than the one holding the active project; external USB or cloud storage can serve as backup destinations. |
| Exported audio file | Listening to or sharing a finished recording in a playback format such as MP3 or WAV | It is not the editable Audacity project and should not be your only project backup. |
Audacity’s guidance therefore points to a practical division: keep active editing on suitable local storage, and use Audio.com or separate backup media for additional copies and sharing. Its project manual recommends keeping regular backups on separate devices, while Audacity Support warns against active editing from external or network storage.
