It suits processes such as checkout or a loan application when navigation needs to be controlled and changes should be finalized at completion. The DZone Refcard #086, “The Essential SWF Cheat Sheet,” by Craig Walls, is a free PDF quick reference; this guide explains the concepts behind it and how they fit into a Spring application.
What Spring Web Flow is for
Spring Web Flow (SWF) is a framework for modeling stateful web tasks as flows rather than treating every page as an unrelated destination. Spring describes its “sweet spot” as stateful applications with controlled navigation, including flight check-in, loan applications, shopping-cart checkout, and a confirmation step for a form. The common feature is a task with a recognizable start and finish, where the application needs to control the next step.
A flow can guide a user through forms, run application logic, branch on a decision, invoke another flow, and finish. It is most relevant when the task’s sequence matters and data should remain in a task-related context until the flow completes. It is not a general claim that every Spring application needs Web Flow or that it is preferable to other approaches in all cases.
DZone describes its Refcard as showing how to add Spring Web Flow to a Spring application and define flows that initiate conversations between an application and its users. The card is a concise reference; the official documentation is the place to verify details for the specific release you use.

How a flow works: states, transitions, and data
Think of a flow as a path through states. A state represents what the application is doing or asking at a particular point. An event—often generated by a user action on a view—can trigger a transition to another state. Data is available within scopes whose lifetimes differ.
State types in the DZone Refcard
- View state: Presents a view, commonly to collect input or show information.
- Action (active) state: Performs application logic.
- Decision state: Chooses a path based on a condition.
- Subflow state: Starts another flow as part of the current task.
- End state: Marks completion of the flow.
The Refcard uses the label “Active” for the state that performs logic. State terminology and configuration details can vary by documentation version, so consult the guide that matches your dependency before copying examples.

Transitions connect events to the next step
A transition describes where execution goes when an event occurs. For example, a checkout flow might show an address view, advance when the user submits it, branch to a correction step if validation fails, and reach a confirmation or end state after successful completion. The event names and conditions are application-specific; the useful design work is deciding which actions are allowed from each state and what happens when they occur.
Choose data scope by lifetime
Scope determines how long flow data remains available. The DZone Refcard distinguishes these five scopes:

| Scope | Lifetime described by the Refcard | Typical design question |
|---|---|---|
| Request | One HTTP request | Is this value needed only while handling this request? |
| Flash | Until a view is rendered, then cleared | Should a short-lived value be available for the next rendered view? |
| View | While the flow is in a view state | Does this data belong only to the current screen? |
| Flow | Until that flow ends | Does the value belong to this task from start to finish? |
| Conversation | Shared by a top-level flow and its subflows | Must a parent flow and nested flow share this value? |
These are conceptual lifetime distinctions, not interchangeable storage labels. Put data in the narrowest scope that fits its intended use; for exact configuration and behavior, check the documentation for the release in your application.
Adding Spring Web Flow to a Spring application
The framework is added as a software dependency. The Spring project page lists the Maven coordinates as org.springframework.webflow:spring-webflow and uses a version placeholder rather than prescribing one universal version. Select a release compatible with your Spring application and use that release’s official setup instructions rather than copying configuration blindly from an older cheat sheet.

- Choose a release. Check the current Spring Web Flow project page and the corresponding official reference documentation.
- Add the dependency. Declare
org.springframework.webflow:spring-webflowin your build with the version appropriate to your project. Confirm the dependency and any required Spring integration components in the release-specific setup guide. - Configure flow discovery and execution. Follow the current guide for locating flow definitions and integrating the flow executor with your application’s web setup. The exact configuration depends on the Spring Web Flow and Spring Framework versions in use.
- Define a small flow. Map its start, views or logic states, transitions, and end state. Keep task-specific data in a scope matching its lifetime.
- Exercise the flow end to end. Test normal transitions as well as validation errors, decision branches, subflow returns, and completion. The 3.0.1 reference guide documents flow testing, but verify the corresponding APIs and examples for your selected release.
The official reference guide available for version 3.0.1 documents XML flow definitions, Spring Expression Language and Unified EL support, testing, and JSF integration. Those are release-specific guide details, not a guarantee that every example or integration remains unchanged in later releases.

As accessed on September 27, 2026, Spring’s project page displayed Spring Web Flow 4.0.1. The detailed official reference guide cited here is explicitly for version 3.0.1 and states that this release requires Java 17 or higher and Spring Framework 6.0 or higher. Those requirements should not be presented as verified requirements for 4.0.1: the available 4.0.1 project-page information does not establish its exact Java and Spring Framework requirements.

Before upgrading or starting a project, check the compatibility information and reference guide for the precise release you intend to use. The Spring Web Flow project repository also directs users to current Javadoc and reference documentation. A version number on a project page and an older version’s guide answer different questions; do not assume their setup details are interchangeable.
Execution URLs and flow instances
The Spring Web Flow GitHub project overview describes a flow execution key used to identify a particular flow instance, and says the same URL is used to start and step through a flow. It also describes automatic POST/REDIRECT/GET behavior. These are project-described architectural characteristics; confirm the exact URL handling and implementation details against the documentation for your chosen release before relying on them in application code.
When Web Flow is a good fit
Assess the task, not just the number of screens. Web Flow is worth considering when navigation should be controlled, the task has clear start and end points, and intermediate changes should remain associated with that task until it is complete. Its state and scope model gives a way to express those requirements. If navigation is naturally free-form or the task has no meaningful flow boundary, the cited material does not establish a reason to adopt Web Flow.
The DZone Refcard #086 is a quick way to review the core vocabulary of states, transitions, and scopes. For implementation choices, especially compatibility and configuration, pair it with the official documentation for the exact release you deploy.
