Start with five habits: update your browser and devices, keep browser protection enabled, inspect links before opening them, verify both the connection and the website before sharing data, and secure the accounts you use online. These steps reduce common risks, but no browser setting can prove that a site or request is legitimate.
1. Keep your browser, operating system and apps updated
Turn on automatic updates for your browser, operating system and installed apps. Updates frequently include patches for newly discovered security flaws as well as other protections. The Federal Trade Commission recommends installing updates promptly rather than postponing them.
Use the update controls built into your device and browser, and restart when an update requires it. If a pop-up asks you to install an “urgent” update from an unfamiliar website, close it and update through the browser or operating system’s own settings instead.

2. Use browser protection—and take warnings seriously
Keep your browser’s phishing, malware and dangerous-download protection switched on. In Chrome, Safe Browsing’s Standard protection warns about known dangerous sites, downloads and extensions. Enhanced protection also checks for potential new threats, but it sends URLs and some page, extension and system information to Google for checking.

Choose the level that fits your security needs and privacy preference; Enhanced protection is not automatically the right choice for everyone. Read Google’s current explanation of the options in Chrome Help.
When a clear dangerous-site or download warning appears, stop. Do not bypass it merely because the page looks familiar or a message told you to continue. If you believe a warning is mistaken, verify the organization through a known channel before proceeding.

3. Pause before clicking links or downloading files
Phishing messages often imitate a bank, delivery company, employer or friend. Before clicking, check:

- the complete sender address, not only the display name;
- the destination domain for misspellings, extra words or look-alike characters;
- whether the message creates artificial urgency or demands an unusual payment, password or verification;
- whether the attachment or download is expected and fits the conversation.
For an unexpected request, type the organization’s known web address yourself or use a telephone number from a statement or official website—not the message’s link or number. Google’s Safety Center tips and the FTC’s guidance describe this approach.
When a download is involved
Use the vendor’s genuine site or an official app store, keep your browser warning system enabled, and scan the file with your device’s built-in security tools. Never disable protection just to install a file that a warning identifies as dangerous.

4. Verify the connection and the destination before sharing sensitive information
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a website, helping prevent others on the network from reading data in transit. It does not prove that the site is honest: a phishing site can also use HTTPS. Check the exact address, the spelling of the domain and why the site is asking for the information.
Chrome can show a “Not Secure” warning when a connection is not protected by HTTPS. Treat that warning as a reason not to enter passwords, payment details, identity numbers or other confidential information. If a supposedly secure service shows an unusual domain or asks for information unrelated to the task, leave and contact the organization independently.

Public Wi-Fi sidebar
Free or public Wi-Fi may not be encrypted. Prefer a trusted network for banking, shopping, account recovery and other sensitive transactions. If the connection is marked insecure, postpone the activity or switch to a network you trust; HTTPS still matters, but it is not a substitute for checking the site itself.

5. Protect the accounts you use in your browser
Use unique passwords with a password manager
A password manager can generate and store a different, long password for every account. That limits the damage if one service is breached. Protect the manager with a strong primary password and the provider’s available security controls.
Turn on two-factor authentication
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever it is offered. As the Federal Trade Commission puts it, “Using two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account.” Authenticator apps and FIDO2 security keys are generally stronger choices than codes sent by text or email, although any available second factor is better than relying on a password alone.
A security key is an optional, physical form of 2FA. Check that the key’s protocol and connector work with your device and account before buying one; the FTC supports the category, not a particular model.

Secure recovery options
Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, active sessions and connected apps. Remove access you no longer recognize, and save recovery codes somewhere offline but accessible to you. Never give a one-time sign-in code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
How to make your browsing safer in practice
- Install pending browser, operating-system and app updates from their built-in settings.
- Confirm that Safe Browsing or the equivalent protection is enabled, then choose Standard or Enhanced protection based on your privacy and threat model.
- When a message arrives, inspect its sender and full URL before clicking; independently navigate to the organization if the request is unexpected.
- Before entering sensitive data, confirm HTTPS, the exact domain and the legitimacy of the request.
- Use a password manager, enable 2FA, and review account recovery and active-session settings.
Google says Safe Browsing helps protect more than five billion devices each day through warnings about dangerous sites and downloads. That is Google’s own service-reach figure, not an independent measure of how effective every warning is. You can learn more about the service at Google Safe Browsing.
