For a basic sequential data set copy, run IEBGENER with the source on SYSUT1, the destination on SYSUT2, SYSIN DD DUMMY, and SYSPRINT directed to an output destination. Use a different documented example when the job edits records, handles a PDS or PDSE member, reads or writes a z/OS UNIX file, or changes media or blocking. The JCL below is a starting pattern, not portable production code: allocation and device conventions depend on your installation.
Basic IEBGENER JCL for a sequential copy
This pattern copies a sequential data set to a newly allocated sequential data set without applying IEBGENER control statements:
//COPYJOB JOB ...
//COPY EXEC PGM=IEBGENER
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD DUMMY
//SYSUT1 DD DSN=source.dataset,DISP=SHR
//SYSUT2 DD DSN=target.dataset,DISP=(NEW,CATLG),
// UNIT=SYSALLDA,SPACE=(TRK,(3,3))
SYSUT1 identifies the input and SYSUT2 identifies the output. SYSPRINT receives utility messages. Because this is an unedited copy, SYSIN DD DUMMY supplies no control statements. IBM’s basic IEBGENER example and reusable JCL example show this general arrangement.
Before running it, replace the placeholder data set names and check whether the output should be new or existing, how it should be cataloged, and what allocation your site requires. Values such as UNIT=SYSALLDA and SPACE=(TRK,(3,3)) illustrate one allocation, not universal defaults. Follow local SMS, unit-group, volume, and JCL conventions.

Choose the example that matches the copy
Sequential data set to sequential data set
Use the basic pattern when both source and destination are sequential and no editing or other control operation is needed. Set the output allocation and data set attributes for the intended result rather than assuming that the example’s values fit your data.
PDS or PDSE member
IEBGENER can use partitioned data set and PDSE members as input or output. A member copy or operation that creates or merges members may require IEBGENER control statements; the basic sequential-copy pattern alone does not define those operations. Consult IBM’s IEBGENER job control statement documentation and the IEBGENER examples for the case that matches your source and destination.

z/OS UNIX file to sequential data set
IEBGENER can copy z/OS UNIX files, but conversion and record-format choices matter. IBM’s Example 7 shows editing and copying a UNIX file to a sequential data set, including 100-byte input records and 80-byte output records. Those lengths are example settings—not general recommendations—and the output length is smaller because the defined edit operation supports that result.
Tape output or reblocking
For a job that changes media or blocking, select an example that matches both the input and output record formats, block sizes, volume, and allocation. IBM’s Example 5 demonstrates producing a blocked tape copy from an unblocked disk file. Its device names are examples; actual device assignments are installation-specific.

Decide whether control statements are needed
Keep SYSIN DD DUMMY for a plain copy that needs no IEBGENER control statements. Supply control statements when the task calls for editing or for operations such as producing partitioned output. Match the output DCB attributes to the records the operation will produce. Do not copy sample RECFM, LRECL, or BLKSIZE values without confirming they suit the source, transformation, and destination.
When converting or editing records, follow the specific operation’s documented example rather than adding DCB values or control data from an unrelated sample. The UNIX-file editing example, for instance, demonstrates that an edit definition can support a different output logical record length from the input.

Check these details before adapting a sample
- Confirm the data set organization. Identify whether the source and destination are sequential, partitioned, a specific PDS or PDSE member, or a UNIX file. Account for member names where applicable.
- Set record attributes deliberately. Check
RECFM,LRECL, andBLKSIZEfor the source and intended output. Preserve or change them only as the task requires. - Choose disposition and allocation. Decide whether the output is new or existing, whether it should be cataloged, and which space, unit, volume, and site-specific SMS conventions apply.
- Use the right SYSIN arrangement. Use
DUMMYonly when no IEBGENER control statements are needed; provide control data for operations that require it. - Verify installation-specific details. Device assignments and allocation parameters in IBM examples may not match your system.
- Consult the complete references for changed tasks. IBM’s reusable JCL example points to the z/OS MVS JCL Reference for JCL syntax and parameter descriptions; use the utility examples and applicable DFSMSdfp Utilities documentation for IEBGENER-specific behavior.
Consider ICEGENER for an unedited copy
IBM recommends considering ICEGENER instead of IEBGENER for an unedited copy if DFSORT is installed. IBM says ICEGENER generally gives better performance and may already be installed under the name IEBGENER. Confirm product availability and local operating practice before choosing it; this is not a blanket substitute for jobs that edit records or otherwise depend on IEBGENER behavior. See IBM’s IEBGENER program documentation.
When OCOPY may fit better
For copying between an MVS data set member and a z/OS UNIX file, consider TSO/E OCOPY, which supports text or binary mode and optional conversion tables. The appropriate choice depends on the source, destination, and whether conversion is required. See IBM’s OCOPY documentation.
