Data engineers build and maintain the systems that move data from where it is generated to where people and applications can use it. To enter the field, learn programming and SQL, practice modeling and repeatable data pipelines, and show your engineering decisions in a project. A degree or certification is not established as a universal requirement; the right preparation depends on the jobs and platforms you are targeting.

What does a data engineer do?

A data engineer connects data sources to useful, dependable data products. The work commonly includes ingesting data, transforming and organizing it, maintaining storage and workflows, and making reliable outputs available to analysts, business intelligence (BI) systems, or other applications.

Microsoft Learn defines the role as integrating, transforming, and consolidating structured and unstructured data into forms suitable for analytics. The UK Government’s Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework describes a data engineer as someone who “develops and constructs data products and services, and integrates them into systems and business processes.” Those descriptions share an emphasis on outcomes, not a required list of tools.

What the work can involve

Depending on the employer, a data engineer may connect operational systems to analytics, document how source fields map to destination fields, replace manual data handling with repeatable flows, write extract-transform-load (ETL) code, support streaming data, or make curated data accessible for analysis. These are examples from the UK framework, not a checklist every job requires.

Some teams focus on scheduled batch pipelines and warehouses. Others include streaming, platform operations, governance, or data products. The division of work varies, as do job titles and technology stacks. Collaboration is part of the job: engineers often work with analysts, architects, administrators, and business users to establish what data means and how it should be consumed.

Which skills should you learn first?

Build transferable foundations before specializing in a vendor’s tools. The UK Government’s skills framework covers programming and build, data modeling, testing, technical understanding, security and compliance, analysis, and communication. A platform-specific example is Microsoft’s Fabric Data Engineer Associate credential, which includes SQL, PySpark, and KQL alongside ingestion, orchestration, security, monitoring, and optimization. That scope does not make those three languages universal job requirements.

1. Programming and engineering practice

Learn one general-purpose language well enough to write readable code, work with files and APIs, handle errors, test behavior, use version control, and document decisions. Python is a common choice for learning, but the cited UK framework does not designate it as a universal requirement. The more important foundation is being able to build and maintain code rather than rely on a one-off script.

2. SQL, relational data, and modeling

Practice querying, joining, and aggregating data. Learn to reason about nulls, duplicates, and how a table’s structure supports its intended use. Data modeling is an explicit competency in the UK skills framework; SQL is also named in the Microsoft Fabric credential’s platform-specific scope.

3. Pipelines, transformations, and orchestration

Understand how data moves from source to destination, how transformations are applied, and how a workflow’s dependencies and failures are handled. Learn the difference between a script that runs once and a repeatable workflow that can be rerun and maintained. The UK framework highlights data flows, mappings, ETL, scaling, and streaming support; Microsoft’s Fabric outline includes loading patterns and orchestration.

4. Storage and one relevant platform

Learn how storage, compute, permissions, performance, and cost interact in one environment relevant to your target roles. Choose that environment by looking at local job descriptions rather than assuming AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is right for everyone. Google Cloud’s Professional Data Engineer exam outline is one platform-specific example, covering design, ingestion and processing, storage, analysis preparation, and workload maintenance and automation.

5. Reliability, security, and communication

Practice validating data, monitoring workflows, documenting assumptions, managing access, and considering privacy and compliance. You also need to explain trade-offs to people who may not work directly with the systems. The UK framework includes security, compliance, ethics, reusable solutions, and communication across technical and nontechnical audiences.

From data analysis

Analysts often bring SQL skills and an understanding of business questions. A useful next step is to strengthen programming, testing, workflow reliability, and the systems that move data into analytical tables.

From software development or operations

Developers and operations professionals may already have coding, systems, or automation experience. They may benefit most from focused practice in SQL, data modeling, data quality, and pipeline semantics—how data should move, change, and recover through a workflow.

From database or adjacent data work

Database and other data practitioners can build on their familiarity with storage and data consumers by practicing repeatable ingestion, transformations, testing, and operational support. Compare those skills with the responsibilities in job descriptions where you plan to apply.

How career levels can progress

The UK Government framework offers one public-sector progression model: data engineer, senior data engineer, lead data engineer, and head of data engineering. It is a useful example, not a universal corporate ladder. In that framework, progression moves from delivering designs set by more senior colleagues toward broader leadership and responsibility; employers define their own expectations and titles.

What project should you build for a portfolio?

Build one polished, end-to-end project rather than a collection of disconnected tool demos. A strong project lets a reader understand what the data means, how it was made dependable, and how another person could use the result. This is practical advice based on role responsibilities and skill requirements, not a formal hiring standard.

A practical project plan

  1. Choose a source. Use a public dataset or documented API. Explain what it contains, where it comes from, and any assumptions or limitations. If privacy or licensing is unclear, use synthetic data instead.
  2. Make ingestion reproducible. Preserve a raw input or document how to retrieve it so another person can repeat the process. Record relevant source and run assumptions.
  3. Transform and model the data. Produce a clearly structured analytical table or other useful output. Explain why you chose that model for its intended use.
  4. Check data quality. Add tests for schema and meaningful business rules, such as required fields or valid ranges. Explain what the checks catch.
  5. Plan for reruns and failures. Show how the pipeline can be run again, what errors are recorded, and what happens when a step fails.
  6. Make the result usable. Expose an output that a downstream user can query or otherwise consume, and explain how to access it.
  7. Document how to work with it. Include setup and run instructions, data meaning, model choices, quality checks, failure behavior, and known gaps in the README.

These details make your reasoning visible: not only which tools you tried, but how you approached repeatability, testing, access, and the needs of a downstream user.

Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer

Google Cloud lists no formal prerequisites for its Professional Data Engineer exam, but recommends 3 or more years of industry experience, including 1 or more years designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. The experience recommendation is for this certification, not an entry requirement for data engineering jobs generally. On its page accessed in 2026, Google lists a standard exam duration of 2 hours, a fee of $200 plus applicable tax, and a credential validity period of 2 years. Fees and policies can change, so check the current official page before booking.

Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer Associate

Microsoft’s current Fabric credential covers ingesting and transforming data, securing and managing analytics solutions, monitoring and optimizing them, and SQL, PySpark, and KQL. Microsoft says the English version will be updated on 19 October 2026; consult the live study guide when preparing, especially after that date.

How to choose

  • Target roles: Prefer a credential for a platform that appears in the jobs you actually want.
  • Exam scope: Compare the official skills outline with what you can already do and what you need to learn.
  • Experience: Distinguish a formal prerequisite from the vendor’s recommended background.
  • Cost and maintenance: Verify current fees, validity, and policies on the official page for your region.
  • Practical evidence: Use a project to show how you apply concepts, rather than treating a credential as a substitute for practice.

How should you evaluate salaries and job prospects?

There is no single salary or demand figure that applies across locations and experience levels. Pay depends on geography, seniority, industry, and whether a published figure means base salary or total compensation. For a useful comparison, consult current sources specific to your location and compare roles at similar levels using the same compensation definition. The UK framework’s four role levels describe a public-sector capability model; they are not employment-demand statistics.
