This seven-part sequence is a flexible guide rather than a universal standard: mathematics, engineering, ecology and technology education use different names and may add calibration, sensitivity analysis or presentation.
What are the steps of modelling?
- Define the purpose and question. Specify the decision, explanation or prediction the model must support. A question such as “How might peak electricity demand change next winter?” requires different detail and accuracy from “What variables could influence demand?” The purpose determines what the model must represent and what accuracy is worth the effort.
- Set the boundary and gather relevant information. Decide what system, location and period are included. Identify important phenomena, available measurements, governing rules and the spatial and temporal domains. The University of Twente’s modelling guide frames this planning with questions including “what is the problem to be modelled?”, “what are the important phenomena?”, “what is the spatial domain?”, “what is the temporal domain?” and “what is the desired accuracy?” (University of Twente modelling guide).
- Make assumptions and simplify. Keep details that can materially affect the stated purpose and omit details that cannot. Record assumptions explicitly—for example, treating a process as constant over a short period, combining several small components into one, or ignoring an interaction outside the chosen boundary. Simplification is not automatically a flaw; it becomes a problem when an omitted feature matters to the intended use.
- Build the representation. Choose concepts, variables and relationships, then express them as a diagram, set of equations, spreadsheet, simulation, code or another suitable form. This is often called conceptual modelling followed by mathematical or computational formulation.
- Implement, solve or run the model. Translate the formulation into calculations or software, supply input data and select an appropriate solution method. Check units, data formats, initial conditions and parameter definitions before treating an output as meaningful.
- Check the model. Use both verification and validation, which answer different questions (see below). Depending on the field, this stage can also include parameter estimation, calibration, sensitivity analysis and tests against independent data.
- Interpret, evaluate and communicate. Relate outputs to the original question, report uncertainty and limitations, and present conclusions in terms the intended audience can use. A computed value is not, by itself, a real-world answer.
The sequence is iterative. The University of Twente describes model building as a process in which steps are taken “over and over again” (University of Twente). A failed check, implausible output or newly discovered data can require changes to the boundary, assumptions, data or structure before the model is run again.
How purpose and boundary shape a model
Start by writing a one-sentence use statement: “This model will ___ for ___ over ___, with approximately ___ accuracy.” Then define what is inside and outside the model. Boundary decisions should cover:
- Entities and processes: which objects, people, flows or interactions are represented.
- Space: a room, watershed, city, network, region or other domain.
- Time: the period, time step and whether the model describes a snapshot, forecast or long-term change.
- Inputs and outputs: what data enter the model and what decision-relevant quantities it returns.
- Accuracy and use: whether the result supports exploration, comparison, design, regulation or a high-consequence decision.
Illustrative example: estimating indoor temperature
Suppose the question is whether a room will remain within a comfortable temperature range overnight. A short-term model might include room volume, insulation, heating output, outdoor temperature and occupancy heat; use an hourly time step; and exclude long-term changes to the building fabric. A model intended to size a heating system would need a different boundary, finer assumptions and stronger evidence. The example is a planning illustration, not a measured result.

How to make and document assumptions
For every simplification, record three things: what is assumed, why it is acceptable for the stated purpose, and what would make it unsafe. Distinguish:
- Structural assumptions: which relationships exist or are omitted.
- Parameter assumptions: numerical values, rates or constants.
- Data assumptions: how missing, noisy or unevenly sampled data are handled.
- Boundary assumptions: what enters or leaves the system.
Link assumptions to the accuracy requirement. A coarse representation may be appropriate for screening alternatives but not for a safety-critical design. Sensitivity analysis—varying uncertain inputs or parameters to see which ones change the output most—helps identify assumptions that deserve better evidence.

Verification and validation: two different checks
| Check | Plain-language question | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Verification | Did we build and implement the model correctly? | Equation and unit checks, code tests, conservation checks, debugging, numerical convergence and comparison with a known solution. |
| Validation | Is this representation and its output adequate for the intended real-world purpose? | Comparison with observations or independent data, expert review, historical back-testing and checks that conclusions remain credible within the stated scope. |
Terminology and methods vary by discipline. A model can be verified—internally consistent and correctly coded—yet poorly validated because it leaves out a process important to the use case. Conversely, agreement with one dataset does not prove that the model is correct everywhere or for every future condition. State which tests were performed, against what evidence, and for which purpose.
Where calibration and sensitivity analysis fit
Calibration or parameter estimation
Calibration selects parameter values so the model reproduces suitable observations or other target evidence. Keep calibration data separate from validation data where possible; otherwise a good fit may reflect tuning rather than predictive adequacy. Ecological modelling treatments commonly place conceptualization, formulation, parameter estimation or calibration, sensitivity analysis and validation in an applied workflow (“Concepts of Modelling”).

Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis
Sensitivity analysis asks which inputs or parameters most affect an output. Uncertainty analysis asks how uncertainty in those quantities propagates to the result. Report ranges, scenarios or probability distributions when a single number would imply more precision than the evidence supports.

There is no single mandated list of steps. These published frameworks illustrate the differences:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical modelling checklist
- Can you state the model’s purpose, user and decision in one sentence?
- Are the spatial and temporal boundaries, inputs and outputs explicit?
- Are important phenomena included and exclusions justified?
- Are assumptions, parameters, units and data sources documented?
- Has the implementation been verified independently where practical?
- Has adequacy been validated for this purpose, population, location and time period?
- Have calibration, sensitivity and uncertainty been handled where they affect the conclusion?
- Does the communication distinguish model output from observation, forecast and fact?
- Can a reader tell when the model should not be used?
How to communicate results responsibly
Present the question and scope before the output. Explain the main assumptions, data, checks and uncertainty, then give the result in the units and decision terms the audience needs. Include conditions such as “under these inputs” or “within this validated range.” If the model does not answer the original question reliably, say so and identify what additional data, structure or testing would be required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these the official universal steps of modelling?
No. The seven-step workflow is a transferable synthesis. Disciplines rename, combine or add stages such as calibration, sensitivity analysis, analysis and presentation.
What is the difference between a model and the real system?
A model is a purposeful representation that omits some features. Its usefulness depends on whether the retained features and resulting outputs are adequate for the stated task.
Should verification happen before validation?
Usually, verify the logic and implementation before relying on validation results, while recognising that modelling is iterative and both checks can prompt revisions.
