V.92 is an enhanced version of V.90 for 56K dial-up over the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Both standards specify up to 56,000 bit/s downstream, but V.92 raises the specified upstream maximum from 33,600 to 48,000 bit/s. It also adds PCM modulation in both directions, faster startup on recognized connections, and modem-on-hold procedures. Those are protocol ceilings and capabilities—not guaranteed speeds or features on every telephone line.
V.90 versus V.92 at a glance
| Feature | V.90 | V.92 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum downstream signalling rate | 56,000 bit/s | 56,000 bit/s |
| Maximum upstream signalling rate | 33,600 bit/s | 48,000 bit/s |
| PCM modulation | Downstream | Both directions where supported |
| Startup behavior | Standard startup procedures | Reduced startup time on recognized connections |
| Modem-on-hold | Not listed as a V.90 feature | Procedures for call-waiting events or outgoing calls |
| Fallback and compatibility | V.90 specification | Can negotiate V.34 in a direction when PCM cannot be supported there |
What actually got faster?
Downstream stayed at 56,000 bit/s
Neither standard raises the downstream ceiling. V.90, approved by the ITU-T on September 25, 1998, and V.92, approved on November 17, 2000, both specify up to 56,000 bit/s from the network to the modem.
Upstream increased to 48,000 bit/s
V.90 specifies up to 33,600 bit/s upstream. V.92 specifies up to 48,000 bit/s, so its headline speed improvement applies mainly to uploads and other traffic sent from the user’s modem. The figures are signalling maxima under suitable conditions, not independent measurements of a typical connection.
V.92 features beyond the speed ceiling
PCM in both directions
V.90 uses pulse-code modulation (PCM) for the high-speed downstream path. V.92 extends PCM modulation to upstream transmission when the connection supports it. If PCM cannot be used in a direction, V.92 can negotiate V.34 operation for that direction instead of treating the connection as all-or-nothing.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shorter startup on recognized connections
V.92 includes procedures that can reduce the time needed to establish a call when the modem recognizes a previously characterized connection. The benefit depends on the modem, the remote equipment and the line conditions.
Modem-on-hold
Modem-on-hold allows a compatible dial-up session to pause for a call-waiting event or an outgoing voice call, then resume. It is not automatic on every V.92 installation: the modem, remote access provider, telephone service and line must all support the required procedures. V.92 Corrigendum 1, approved July 14, 2003, addressed aspects of the modem-on-hold description.

Why a V.92 modem may not run at V.92 rates
A modem advertises a standard, then negotiates a mode with the equipment at the other end. The achievable rate is constrained by the telephone network, analog impairments, local wiring, central-office equipment, noise and the remote provider’s modem. A V.92 modem therefore may connect below 48,000 bit/s upstream, below 56,000 bit/s downstream, or using V.34 fallback. A V.92 modem also needs a V.92-capable remote system to use V.92-only features; connecting to a V.90 system does not upgrade that system.
- “56K” identifies the modem class, not a guaranteed 56,000-bit/s connection.
- Advertised maxima are protocol limits, not broadband-equivalent throughput.
- Call waiting and modem-on-hold can fail or disconnect if the telephone service or remote system is incompatible.
Which standard matters for a legacy dial-up setup?
Choose V.92 when the complete connection supports it
V.92 is preferable for a V.92-capable dial-up provider and telephone line because it offers the higher upstream ceiling, faster recognized startups and modem-on-hold procedures. The improvement is most relevant to uploads, connection setup and voice-call interruptions—not ordinary downstream browsing speed.

V.90 remains interoperable
A V.92 modem can connect to older systems using the modes they share. If the provider supplies only V.90 service, the connection will not gain V.92’s upstream maximum or added procedures, but a V.90 modem can still perform the original 56K-class function where the line permits.
Check compatibility before buying hardware
For retro-computing or other legacy use, verify the host computer and operating system, the modem’s interface (such as serial or USB), driver availability, telephone-line requirements and whether a local dial-up service actually supplies a V.92 signal. Current product stock and ISP availability vary by location and are not implied by the standards.

Historical context
Both recommendations describe voice-band modem operation on the PSTN, not DSL, cable, fiber or mobile broadband. V.90 is the 1998 recommendation; V.92 is the 2000 document formally titled “Enhancements to Recommendation V.90.” Their rates should be read as technical standard limits for that era’s dial-up protocol.
