The dark web is not one website or a searchable directory; onion services are individual sites reachable through Tor.
What you need
- Tor Browser, downloaded from the official Tor Project site.
- The service’s exact, trusted onion address.
- A reason to trust both the address and the site operator before sharing information.
Current onion addresses contain 56 letters and numbers followed by .onion. The former 16-character version-2 addresses are obsolete and no longer work.
How to open an onion site

Download Tor Browser
Use the official Tor Project download page. Avoid unofficial download mirrors and random “dark-web browser” packages.

Connect to Tor
Open Tor Browser and choose the normal connection option. If your network blocks direct Tor access, Tor Project documentation describes using bridges; the exact setup depends on your network and current Tor Browser version.

Get the address from a trusted source
Use the service’s official, regular website or another channel you already trust. Some regular websites advertise an onion counterpart through Onion-Location; Tor Browser may display an “.onion available” suggestion when that mechanism is present.

Enter the complete address
Paste or type the full 56-character address, including
.onion. One wrong character can lead to an error, a different destination, or no connection at all. -
Verify the connection before interacting
Read the URL bar and Tor connection indicator. Confirm that the address is exactly the one you expected before logging in, uploading anything, or entering personal or financial information.

Why an onion site may not load
Check the address format
Recheck every character and confirm that you are not using an obsolete 16-character v2 address. A current address is 56 characters before the .onion suffix.
The service may be offline
Even a correctly typed address can fail if the onion service is shut down, overloaded, or temporarily unreachable. Retry later rather than searching random replacement addresses.
Your network may interfere with Tor
Some workplaces, schools, countries, and internet providers restrict Tor connections. Consult current Tor Project guidance on bridges instead of installing an unverified workaround.

Test Tor separately
If you need to determine whether Tor itself is working, use a known onion service linked by Tor Project documentation. Do not treat a successful test as proof that an unrelated onion site is trustworthy.
What Tor does—and does not—prove
Tor onion connections provide end-to-end encryption within the Tor service design and cryptographic address properties that help a browser identify the intended onion endpoint. Those protections describe the connection; they do not certify the operator, content, business claims, or legality of the site.
- An onion address can still be fraudulent or operated by criminals.
- Malware, scams, illegal content, and abusive material can exist on onion services.
- A padlock or successful Tor connection is not a guarantee that the information you receive is accurate or safe.
Use the same skepticism you would apply to an unfamiliar regular website, and do not enter credentials unless you have independently confirmed both the service and its address.

Protect files and personal information
Do not open downloaded documents in external applications while online
Tor Browser guidance warns that opening a downloaded document in an outside application can cause that application to fetch internet resources directly. Those requests may bypass Tor and expose your non-Tor IP address. If you must inspect a file, disconnect first and use a controlled, updated environment appropriate to the file type.
Minimize identifying details
Do not provide your real name, normal email address, location, payment details, or reused passwords unless the service genuinely requires them and you have verified its identity. Separate accounts and unique passwords reduce the damage from a compromised site.
Be cautious with downloads and scripts
Do not install software, browser extensions, or executables offered by an unknown onion site. A site can use Tor correctly and still distribute harmful files.

Is visiting the dark web legal?
There is no single worldwide rule covering every onion service or activity. Using Tor or visiting an onion address may be lawful in your jurisdiction, while particular content, transactions, or attempts to access systems can be illegal. Check the laws that apply where you live and follow the same rules against fraud, harassment, theft, and unauthorized access that apply on the regular web.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching for an address in an unverified onion directory and assuming its listings are safe.
- Trusting a copied address without checking it against the service’s official channel.
- Assuming Tor anonymity makes you immune to website tracking, mistakes, malware, or legal consequences.
- Opening a downloaded Office, PDF, image, or media file in an external app while Tor Browser is connected.
- Reusing passwords or submitting identity documents to an unfamiliar operator.
