An 8-core SoC gives a device eight CPU cores to handle work. That can help with several tasks running at once or software that splits a job into parallel work—but it does not automatically make a phone faster. Core design, software, power limits, thermals, and the rest of the chip all matter.
What does “8-core SoC” mean?
“Eight-core” counts the CPU cores: the units that execute instructions for apps and system software. It does not count every computing component in the chip, and it does not tell you how fast each core is.
A system on a chip (SoC) combines a CPU with other components. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite platform overview, for example, groups CPU, graphics, AI, imaging, connectivity, and other capabilities as parts of its mobile platform. So an eight-core CPU is only one part of the phone’s overall computing capability.
What is the point of having eight CPU cores?
Multiple cores provide more CPU execution resources. If different tasks can run independently, or an app can divide a job into parallel work, multiple cores can work at the same time. Extra cores can also give the operating system more capacity to schedule background and system tasks while a foreground app is active.

- This dominant gaming processor can deliver fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture

The gain depends on the work and the chip. Software and the operating system’s scheduler determine how much of the available parallel capacity is used. A task that relies mainly on one thread may get little benefit from additional cores, and an app does not necessarily use all eight.
Why can two 8-core SoCs perform differently?
Core count does not reveal the cores’ designs or roles. A chip may combine high-performance cores with more efficiency-focused cores, or use a different arrangement. The balance affects how a device handles short bursts of demanding work, longer workloads, and power use.

Different core mixes serve different aims
Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 microarchitecture changed its core mix by converting one efficiency core into an additional performance core. Qualcomm also reports “35% faster performance and 40% better power efficiency” versus the previous generation. Those are Qualcomm’s claims about that platform and comparison—not an independently verified result, nor a measure of the benefit of having eight cores.
MediaTek describes its Dimensity 9300 as an eight-core, “all-big-core” design with four Cortex-X4 and four A720 processors. MediaTek reports a 15% single-core performance upgrade and a 40% multi-core performance upgrade. Those figures are the company’s claims for its stated product comparison; they do not establish that every eight-core chip is faster than a chip with fewer cores.

Peak speed is not the whole experience
Arm distinguishes bursty smartphone workloads, such as app startup, from sustained workloads, such as gaming and video streaming. A phone’s performance during a short burst may differ from its behavior during a longer load, when power and thermal limits matter. Arm describes processor cores as addressing varying performance, power, and cost requirements; the core count alone does not tell you how a particular chip balances them.
Is an 8-core processor better than a 6-core one?
Not necessarily. Eight cores offer more potential CPU capacity, but core count by itself cannot establish which chip or phone performs better. A six-core design with different core performance, power behavior, or implementation could suit a given workload better than an eight-core design. The answer depends on what you do and how the complete device handles it.

There is no universal ranking established by core count alone. Qualcomm’s and MediaTek’s percentages above concern named platforms and their own comparison contexts; they are not controlled cross-vendor comparisons of eight-core chips against lower-core-count alternatives.

- Core arrangement and generation: Look for the types and mix of cores, not just the number eight.
- Relevant workload: Distinguish performance in single-threaded work from performance in software that can use multiple cores.
- Sustained behavior: Consider longer gaming or compute loads separately from brief bursts, and account for thermal limits.
- Energy use and battery life: Assess the whole phone; peak speed alone does not show how efficiently it performs everyday tasks.
- Other components and implementation: GPU, AI accelerator, image processor, modem, memory system, cooling, and software also affect what the device can do.
For CPU architecture context, Arm’s CPU architecture overview explains that the architecture defines elements such as the instruction set and the exception and memory models used by operating systems and hypervisors. That is one reason a core count is only a small part of a chip’s specification.
