The 4-pin FireWire connector carries data only. The 6-pin connector carries the same FireWire 400 data signals and adds contacts for DC power and ground. A 6-pin connection is therefore not faster; choose a cable that matches the ports on both devices and verify how each device is powered.
4-pin vs. 6-pin FireWire at a glance
| Characteristic | 4-pin FireWire | 6-pin FireWire |
|---|---|---|
| Data | FireWire 400 data pairs | The same FireWire 400 data pairs |
| Bus power contacts | None; the cable does not power the device | Power and ground contacts are included |
| Physical size | Smaller plug, commonly used on camcorders and other compact devices | Larger plug, commonly used on computers and peripherals |
| Data speed implied by the pin count | Not faster or slower because of the pin count | Not faster or slower because of the pin count |
What the extra two pins do
A 4-pin connector contains the two FireWire data pairs but omits the power contacts. A 6-pin connector adds DC power and ground, allowing a suitable host port to supply bus power to a connected peripheral.
Power output is implementation-specific. For example, Apple’s archived PowerBook developer documentation described that particular connector as providing up to 6 W, up to 12 V with no load, and a maximum current of 0.5 A. Those figures describe that PowerBook implementation, not a universal output guaranteed by every 6-pin FireWire port. Check the computer or peripheral documentation before relying on bus power.
Is 6-pin FireWire faster?
No. The 4-pin and 6-pin forms use the same FireWire 400 data capability. The two additional contacts on a 6-pin plug are for power and ground, not extra data bandwidth.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FireWire 800 is a separate interface commonly identified by its 9-pin connector. A cable with a 4-pin or 6-pin FireWire 400 end and a 9-pin FireWire 800 end does not turn the older connection into FireWire 800; connector guides describe these mixed cables as limited to 400 Mbps.
Which cable should you buy?
- Inspect both device ports. Count the contacts and identify whether each port is 4-pin, 6-pin or 9-pin.
- Match the cable ends to those ports. For a 4-pin device and a 6-pin device, use a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable. For two 4-pin ports, use a 4-pin-to-4-pin cable. For a 4-pin device connected to a computer with a 9-pin FireWire 800 port, use a 4-pin-to-9-pin cable rated for the intended connection.
- Confirm the device’s power arrangement. A 4-pin end has no power contacts, so a 4-pin camcorder, drive or other peripheral must use its own battery, AC adapter or other specified power source. A cable’s 6-pin end cannot send power through the device’s 4-pin connector.
- Check hardware and operating-system support. The correct cable cannot compensate for a missing FireWire interface, an incompatible adapter or unsupported software.
Common connection examples
Digital camcorder to computer
Many tape-based camcorders use a 4-pin i.LINK/FireWire port, while older computers may provide a 6-pin port. A 4-pin-to-6-pin cable is the normal FireWire 400 choice. The camcorder still needs its own appropriate power; the computer’s 6-pin port does not power it through the camcorder’s 4-pin socket.

Two compact devices with 4-pin ports
Use a 4-pin-to-4-pin cable. Neither end provides bus power, so both devices must be powered independently as required by their manuals.
4-pin device to a 9-pin computer port
Use a 4-pin-to-9-pin cable when the computer’s available port is FireWire 800. The link remains limited by the 4-pin FireWire 400 side, despite the 9-pin connector on the computer end.

FireWire support on current Macs
Before buying a cable for a Mac transfer, verify the Mac model, any required hardware adapter chain and the operating system used by the transfer application. Apple’s Final Cut Pro documentation states: “Important: FireWire is not supported in macOS Tahoe or later.” Consequently, a physically correct cable may not produce a working workflow on a Mac running macOS Tahoe or a later release; confirm support for the exact macOS version and application first.

How to avoid the most common mistakes
- Do not equate more pins with higher speed. Pin count distinguishes power capability here; the 9-pin connector is the relevant FireWire 800 form.
- Do not assume every 6-pin port supplies the same power. Host implementations differ, and the documented Apple PowerBook figures are model-specific.
- Do not buy by the device name alone. “FireWire,” “IEEE 1394” and “i.LINK” labels do not tell you which physical connector is fitted.
- Do not expect a cable to solve operating-system incompatibility. Confirm that the computer, drivers and transfer software support FireWire.
