Sensitivity describes how weak an FM signal a receiver can detect. It is only one part of reception performance: selectivity describes how well the receiver rejects nearby stations and other strong signals that cause interference.
What FM sensitivity measures
FM sensitivity is a receiver’s ability to pick up weak FM signals. A more sensitive tuner can produce usable reception from a weaker station signal, assuming the figures are measured using the same convention and comparable test conditions.
The convention discussed for car-stereo specifications is decibel femtowatts (dBf). Under that convention, the rating is an input threshold: the smaller the dBf figure, the weaker the signal the receiver can handle. Therefore, a lower dBf sensitivity number indicates better weak-station pickup.
Why the lower number is better
A sensitivity figure is not a score where a larger value means superior performance. It indicates how much signal is needed for the tuner to receive a station. Requiring less signal means the receiver can work with weaker broadcasts.

Do not apply the “lower is better” rule to an unrelated unit or a different test method without checking its definition. Sensitivity figures are meaningful for comparison only when the units, measurement definitions and test conditions match.
Sensitivity is not the same as selectivity
Sensitivity: hearing a weak station
Sensitivity addresses whether the receiver can detect a weak desired broadcast. This is the specification to examine when a distant or low-power station fades because the incoming signal is weak.

Selectivity: rejecting an unwanted station
Selectivity addresses interference. A strong station on a nearby frequency, or another strong signal entering the tuner, can make listening difficult even if the receiver is sensitive. A receiver can therefore have good weak-signal sensitivity and still need strong selectivity to separate stations that are close together.
Why both matter in a car
In a vehicle, the reception problem may be insufficient signal, interference from a nearby station, or both. A sensitivity figure alone cannot identify which problem you will experience. Use the sensitivity specification for weak-signal capability and look for a separately stated selectivity specification when adjacent-station rejection matters.

How to compare FM sensitivity specifications
- Confirm the unit. Check that each figure is expressed in dBf, rather than another sensitivity unit.
- Check the test definition. Look for the stated signal condition, audio or noise criterion and other measurement details.
- Compare like with like. A lower number is meaningful only when the receivers were rated under comparable conditions.
- Review selectivity separately. If nearby stations are the problem, sensitivity alone will not answer the question.
- Consider the whole receiver. Sensitivity is one specification among the features and system characteristics that affect a purchase decision.
Published specifications do not automatically create a reliable ranking. A lower figure from one test method may not be directly comparable with a higher figure produced under another method.
What this means for the historical car-stereo question
The original discussion concerned aftermarket receivers, including the Clarion DXZ465MP, Clarion ProAudio DXZ665MP and, later, the JVC KD-G820. That conversation dates from March 21, 2006. Those model names are useful historical context, not current buying recommendations.

The available material does not provide a standardized, controlled sensitivity comparison for those models, nor does it establish their present availability. You should not infer which one receives weak stations best from the model names or from an isolated specification quoted under an unknown test method.

Weak stations fade or cannot be found
Start with the receiver’s FM sensitivity figure, using the dBf interpretation above. A lower comparable figure suggests stronger weak-signal capability, but it does not prove performance in every installation or location.

A station is replaced by a nearby signal
Look beyond sensitivity and examine selectivity. The symptom may be inadequate rejection of an adjacent or otherwise strong interfering signal rather than an inability to detect the desired station.
The specification is unclear
Do not rank receivers when the unit, test conditions or measurement definition is missing. Treat the figures as incomparable until those details are available.
Bottom line for choosing a receiver
For the dBf convention, choose the lower sensitivity figure when your priority is receiving weak FM stations, then evaluate selectivity for resistance to nearby-station interference. The 2006 discussion can explain the terminology, but it cannot establish a current model winner or predict reception in your particular car.
