A dark-room test can make light leakage look much worse than it does in ordinary lighting, so judge the display from your usual seated position and in the room where you normally use it.
Why laptop screen edges can look brighter
Several effects can produce uneven brightness, and a short description alone cannot identify which one is responsible.
Normal LCD brightness variation
LCD panels can look different from center to edge because of their light-guide design, viewing angle, or small differences among display layers. LG says its monitor light guide is designed to keep the brighter area toward the center and describes darker edges as normal. That is general LCD context, not an acceptance standard for a particular laptop model. LG USA Support
Light leakage or backlight bleed
Bright areas around screen edges or corners, especially over dark images in a dim room, may be light leakage: some backlight passes through the display layers in particular areas. Dell describes this appearance in its display guidance. Dell Support

Viewing angle and panel effects
IPS panel characteristics and the angle from which you view the screen can affect how corners and edges appear. Intel’s explanation applies to the discontinued Intel NUC X15 laptop kit, while Acer’s guidance discusses IPS screens more generally; neither source can diagnose an individual laptop from a photograph or brief symptom description. How to check the screen fairly
- Use ordinary room lighting. Look from your normal seated position. A completely dark room and a black test image can exaggerate leakage. Dell illustrates normal office lighting at 150–200 lux; that is an example condition in Dell’s guidance, not a universal test standard. Dell Support
- Check typical content. View bright pages and applications as well as dark images, and note whether the bright areas are noticeable during your normal tasks.
- Try a few comfortable brightness settings. Observe whether the effect changes, but do not treat this check as a definitive diagnosis. Dell Support
- Compare like with like, if possible. Put the same laptop model and screen type beside yours, showing the same image at equal brightness, under the same room lighting and from the same viewing position. Dell Support
- Document what you see for support. Take a photo in normal room lighting and record the exact laptop model and service identifier. A dark-room photo by itself is weak evidence of whether a screen is abnormal. Dell Support
What you can do if it bothers you
For mild leakage, lower the display brightness to a comfortable level, add ambient room light, or use a lighter application theme. These changes can make the effect less noticeable, but they do not repair the panel. Intel and Acer say this type of effect cannot be completely eliminated. When to contact the manufacturer or seller
Ask the manufacturer or seller about inspection or service if bright areas are clearly visible in normal room lighting, remain conspicuous across comfortable brightness settings, look much worse than on a comparable same-model display, or interfere with comfortable use. Dell says hot spots conspicuous in normal room lighting are outside its specifications and should be evaluated by support. That is Dell’s guidance, not a warranty decision for every brand or location. Check the warranty and return terms that apply to your laptop and region. Dell Support
There is no universal numeric pass/fail threshold established by these manufacturer sources. Avoid ordering a generic replacement screen without a diagnosis: the correct panel and repair route depend on the laptop model and service context.
