There is no single best face detector for every job. MediaPipe is a strong starting point for mobile and live video; OpenCV YuNet suits applications that need a very small model and already use OpenCV; RetinaFace and YOLO-family face models are worth evaluating when difficult scenes or more control over model capacity justify extra deployment work. The right choice depends on the faces and conditions you need to detect, the hardware you have, and the cost of missed or incorrect detections.

What face detection does—and what it does not do

A face detector locates face-shaped regions in an image or video frame, usually by returning bounding boxes. Many modern detectors also return facial landmarks, such as eye, nose, and mouth points, which can support alignment or other downstream processing.

Detection is not face recognition. A detector answers “Where are the faces?” Recognition attempts to identify a person or verify that two face images belong to the same person. A recognition pipeline may use a detector first to locate and align a face, but a detection result alone does not establish identity.

How to choose a detector

Choose against the conditions and costs of your application rather than a single headline benchmark. A model that is fast on a phone may miss more tiny or partly hidden faces; a higher-capacity model may improve difficult-scene recall but demand more computation and integration work.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Recall on difficult faces: Check performance on small faces and on faces affected by occlusion, unusual pose, blur, or low resolution.
  • Latency and hardware: Measure end-to-end time on the actual phone, browser, embedded device, or server. A model’s benchmark latency does not include every stage of your application.
  • Memory, model size, and power: These can matter as much as raw speed on battery-powered or embedded devices.
  • Landmarks: If another stage needs facial alignment, compare landmark availability and quality as well as boxes.
  • Deployment fit: Existing OpenCV or YOLO workflows, supported export formats, and the amount of engineering effort can change which candidate is practical.
  • Error costs: Decide whether false negatives (missed faces) or false positives (non-faces treated as faces) are more costly. The detector’s score threshold affects that balance.

How the main options differ

Option Best fit What it offers Important qualification
MediaPipe Face Detector (BlazeFace) Mobile, browser, and live-stream prototypes Lightweight mobile-oriented detection, multi-face support, and six landmarks; the current Google AI Edge task supports still images, decoded video frames, and live streams. Google AI Edge reports 2.94 ms CPU and 7.41 ms GPU for the BlazeFace short-range pipeline on Pixel 6. These are pipeline latency figures for that device and configuration, not a guarantee for other hardware or complete applications.
OpenCV FaceDetectorYN (YuNet) C++ or Python projects already using OpenCV, especially when a compact ONNX model and explicit controls matter OpenCV’s official tutorial documents a 338KB ONNX detector with five landmarks and score and non-maximum-suppression controls. The tutorial’s WIDER Face validation scores are 0.830 easy, 0.824 medium, and 0.708 hard on its cited setup. They are benchmark results, not universal accuracy rates.
RetinaFace Evaluation for difficult, small, or occluded faces, or landmark-aware pipelines A single-stage dense detector with five-point landmark supervision. The RetinaFace paper reports that landmark supervision improves hard-face detection. Expect more model and deployment complexity than with a mobile-first option. Its reported 89.59% TAR at FAR=1e-6 on IJB-C is an end-to-end recognition result with ArcFace, not a face-detection accuracy score.
YOLO-family face models Teams with a YOLO training and deployment stack, or needing model-capacity choices across embedded and server hardware YOLO5Face reports model variants from extra-large to very small for embedded or mobile real-time use, and reports strong WIDER Face performance on VGA images. Those are paper-specific benchmark claims. Verify the selected model’s license, export format, and latency on the intended implementation and hardware.

What benchmark scores can—and cannot—tell you

WIDER FACE, introduced by its authors in 2016, was described as “10 times larger than existing datasets” and was designed to cover substantial scale variation. Its easy, medium, and hard subsets make it useful for comparing how detectors behave as faces become more challenging. OpenCV’s YuNet tutorial, for example, reports separate validation scores for all three subsets rather than one blended number.

A benchmark result is still tied to its dataset, evaluation setup, image sizes, and scoring method. It does not predict performance for every camera, population, lighting condition, or threshold. In particular, do not read the YuNet scores above as percentages of all faces your application will find, or compare them directly with a differently reported metric.

For a meaningful comparison, record the detector threshold, input resolution, non-maximum-suppression settings, hardware, and measurement method. Include end-to-end latency, peak memory, model size, power use, landmark quality where relevant, and failure rates under the conditions your application encounters.

How to evaluate candidates on your own data

  1. Define success before testing. Specify the situations that matter—such as small faces, occlusion, pose, blur, and low resolution—and whether missed faces or false detections are more costly.
  2. Use representative, consented examples. Include the range of cameras, lighting, poses, and people expected in the intended use. Handle images and video in accordance with applicable consent and privacy requirements.
  3. Fix the test conditions. Run candidates at the intended input resolution and hardware. Record score thresholds and non-maximum-suppression settings so that results can be reproduced.
  4. Measure both errors and resource use. Track missed faces, false positives, latency, memory, and power; evaluate landmarks too if a later stage depends on them.
  5. Choose the operating threshold deliberately. Raising or lowering the score threshold changes the balance between precision and recall. Select it based on the consequences of each error, then validate again at that setting.
  6. Test the full pipeline. Include decoding, preprocessing, any tracking, and downstream work in latency measurements. A detector’s isolated timing is not the same as application response time.

Can face detection run in real time on a phone?

Yes, it can, depending on the model, device, input size, and meaning of “real time” for the application. Google AI Edge reports 2.94 ms CPU and 7.41 ms GPU for the BlazeFace short-range pipeline on Pixel 6. Treat those as results for that benchmarked device and pipeline, not as a promised frame rate for other phones or an app that performs additional work.

Practical starting points

  • Start with MediaPipe for a mobile, browser, or live-stream prototype that needs boxes and six landmarks with minimal initial friction.
  • Try OpenCV YuNet when a 338KB documented ONNX artifact, five landmarks, and integration with an existing OpenCV application are priorities.
  • Evaluate RetinaFace when difficult faces or landmark-informed alignment matter enough to justify additional model and deployment complexity.
  • Evaluate a YOLO-family face model when your team already has a YOLO stack or needs to tune capacity to a target device, and can verify the chosen implementation’s license and performance.
