BIOS and Windows may be showing different sensors, using different averaging methods, or measuring under different conditions. Identify the exact sensor label, CPU, motherboard, BIOS version and Windows utility before comparing the values. A BIOS reading of 65°C by itself does not prove that the processor is overheating.
Why the two temperatures can disagree
“CPU temperature” is not always one measurement. Monitoring software may expose individual core temperatures, a package temperature, or a motherboard-reported CPU sensor.
Core versus package temperature
Intel distinguishes per-core temperature from package temperature. Package temperature is a weighted average of core temperatures reported to monitoring software, so it will not necessarily match any single core. AMD Ryzen Master likewise provides per-core information plus average and peak readings. A BIOS value and a Windows value can therefore both be valid while describing different measurements.
Motherboard sensor versus processor sensor
A motherboard BIOS hardware-health page may show a CPU sensor and a motherboard sensor. The exact labels and implementation vary by board. Some Windows utilities read processor telemetry directly; others may display a motherboard sensor or rename readings. Without the labels, there is no reliable way to map 65°C to 30°C.

Different operating conditions
Entering BIOS and using the Windows desktop are not identical conditions. BIOS setup can leave the processor at a different power state, fan-control state or workload than Windows idle. Intel says idle temperature varies with cooling, the environment, processor configuration and running applications. AMD also identifies the cooler, airflow, ambient temperature, settings, workload and background applications as factors.
Is 65°C dangerous?
Not automatically. Intel states that, in typical system designs, package idle temperature is usually below 65°C, while also noting that there is no exact idle-temperature target and recommending system-vendor guidance for a specific configuration. That is general Intel guidance for typical systems, not a universal limit for every processor or a diagnosis of this computer.

The important question is whether the same clearly identified sensor remains unusually high under comparable conditions, especially during a known workload, and whether the system shows symptoms such as throttling, shutdowns or instability.
How to compare the readings correctly
- Record the system details. Note the exact CPU model, motherboard model, BIOS version, Windows monitoring application and every sensor name shown in BIOS and Windows.
- Classify each sensor. Determine whether each value is a core, package, motherboard CPU, average or peak reading. Do not compare a package average with a single-core or peak value.
- Let Windows settle. Boot normally, close unnecessary applications and allow the system to sit idle for several minutes. Watch one explicitly named sensor over time rather than relying on a single instant.
- Compare equivalent values. Match per-core to per-core and package to package. If the Windows utility reports average or peak, record that status alongside the number.
- Repeat under a known workload. Compare the same sensor during the same workload and after similar waiting periods. Record the result rather than treating a brief spike as a sustained temperature.
- Ask the system vendor when labels remain unclear. The motherboard or computer manufacturer can identify how its BIOS sensor is defined for that specific board. Intel specifically recommends vendor guidance for more exact idle-temperature interpretation.
What to check if the high value persists
If one consistently identified sensor remains high in both comparable idle and load checks, investigate the cooling system rather than buying parts solely to reconcile two different readings.

- Cooler suitability and mounting: confirm that the cooler is rated for the processor and firmly mounted.
- Thermal interface: inspect thermal-paste application if cooler contact is questionable. Paste is not a fix for a disagreement caused by different sensors.
- Airflow and ambient temperature: check fan direction, blocked filters, dust and room temperature.
- Settings and workload: review power limits, overclocking or other firmware settings and identify software that keeps the CPU busy.
- Background monitoring: some applications continually poll hardware and can add activity; close extra monitors while testing.
Replace or upgrade a cooler only after confirming sustained temperatures, inadequate cooling capacity or a mounting problem, and after checking compatibility with the CPU, case and motherboard.
Information needed for a configuration-specific answer

The Bottom Line
Start by identifying the two sensor labels and comparing like-for-like readings under the same conditions. Until the CPU, motherboard, BIOS version and monitoring utility are known, 65°C in BIOS and 30°C in Windows are two unexplained measurements—not proof that either display is wrong.
