CPU mounting means seating the processor in its motherboard socket and installing a compatible cooler on top. The exact steps depend on the socket, motherboard, and cooler model: align the CPU before closing its retention mechanism, never force it into place, and do not power on until the cooler is secured and connected.
Before you start: check compatibility and prepare
Find the exact CPU socket and consult the manuals for your motherboard and cooler. Processor seating and cooler hardware are socket- and model-specific; a procedure for one platform should not be assumed to fit another. Intel provides socket-specific documentation, including separate resources for LGA1700 and LGA1851, in its processor manual index.
- Confirm that the processor matches the motherboard socket and that the cooler supports that socket.
- Check that you have the cooler’s correct mounting parts, such as its bracket or backplate.
- Work with the system powered off and take electrostatic-discharge precautions. Intel and AMD both advise careful handling and grounding; Intel’s boxed-processor guidance describes precautions including a ground strap, gloves, and mat.
- Handle the CPU by its edges. Avoid touching its contact surfaces or the socket contacts.
How to install the CPU in its socket
- Open the socket retention mechanism. Follow the motherboard manual for the specific socket; do not guess how its lever or cover releases.
- Find the alignment marks. Match the CPU’s marker and keying features to the socket. For LGA1700, Intel specifically instructs users to match the Pin 1 markers and notches.
- Lower the CPU gently into place. It should sit correctly when oriented and aligned. AMD says the processor should not be forced into the socket; if it does not settle, stop and recheck orientation, socket compatibility, and the socket itself.
- Check that it is level before securing it. Intel’s LGA1700 instructions say to verify the package sits level at all four corners and visually inspect seating before actuating the loading mechanism. Intel warns, “Improper installation can damage your processor and make it inoperable.”
- Close the retention mechanism as the manual directs. Do not use extra pressure to compensate for a CPU that is misaligned or not seated properly.
Intel’s detailed LGA1700 installation guidance applies to that socket. Other sockets may have different retention designs and instructions.
How to mount the CPU cooler
Use the instructions for the exact cooler model. The required bracket, retention method, and screw or pin sequence vary. First confirm the processor is seated and the cooler’s mounting hardware is appropriate for the motherboard and socket.

- Check the thermal interface. Some coolers have thermal compound pre-applied; others require compound to be supplied separately. If compound is already applied, do not touch or remove it during installation. If there is no pre-applied compound, use thermal interface material as directed by the cooler maker.
- Position the cooler and engage its mounts in the specified order. Do not assume pushpins, clips, or spring screws are interchangeable procedures.
- Verify the cooler is secure and level. Confirm each retention point is engaged according to the cooler instructions.
- Connect the cooler fan lead to the motherboard’s CPU fan header. Use the motherboard manual to locate the correct header.
For example, Intel’s Laminar RM1/RS1 instructions describe aligning pushpins with motherboard holes and connecting the fan to the processor fan header; they also say not to touch the cooler’s pre-applied thermal compound. Those steps apply to the listed Laminar products, not to every cooler. AMD’s cited cooler installation guide is based on AM4 and covers clip-retained and spring-screw designs. Its exact sequence should not be treated as an AM5 procedure.
Do you need separate thermal paste?
Not always. If the cooler has fresh thermal compound pre-applied, follow its instructions rather than adding more. If it does not, thermal interface material is needed as directed by the cooler maker. Replacing a cooler may also require cleaning away old compound and applying new material before reinstalling it. Check the cooler’s manual for its specific instructions.

How to choose a compatible cooler
Appearance alone does not establish compatibility. Compare the cooler’s supported sockets and included mounting hardware with your motherboard, then check the cooler maker’s instructions and whether its cooling capability suits your processor.

AMD’s November 2024 AM5 motherboard quick reference describes AM5 as a 1718-pin LGA socket and states AM4 cooler compatibility. That platform-level note is not a substitute for checking the exact cooler’s support list and mounting parts.

Checks before powering on
- The processor is seated and retained according to the motherboard manual.
- The cooler is securely mounted and not visibly tilted or loose.
- Thermal compound is present when the cooler’s instructions require it.
- The cooler fan is connected to the CPU fan header.
- The cooler is suitable for the processor and airflow is not obstructed.
AMD’s processor handling guidance calls for a properly mounted heatsink/fan, appropriate thermal interface material when needed, and a connected fan. Its cooling support page identifies alignment, retention, fan connection, and airflow as relevant checks.

If the CPU or cooler does not fit
- The CPU will not sit flat: Stop. Recheck the socket type, orientation marks, and keying. Do not press down to make it fit.
- The cooler mounts do not line up: Confirm the cooler supports the socket and that you are using the correct included bracket or backplate. Do not force the mount or substitute hardware.
- You are unsure about the thermal compound: Check whether it is pre-applied and follow the cooler maker’s directions before mounting.
- The system reports a cooling problem: Power it off and inspect cooler retention, fan-header connection, and airflow before trying again.
