Short answer: Firefox for Android’s redesigned menu is a real usability regression for some people, but “pure garbage” is an opinion, not an established verdict. Mozilla made the new menu automatic in the general-release Firefox for Android version 141 and later, and its support documentation says the previous menu cannot be restored through a supported setting.

What changed in Firefox for Android

Mozilla’s redesigned menu is included automatically from Firefox for Android 141 onward. The change affects both the homepage and the menu used while viewing a website.

Area What Mozilla describes What this means in practice
Homepage Links to bookmarks, browsing history, downloads, saved passwords, sync options and settings These destinations remain available, but their location and presentation differ from the former design.
Website menu Expands as you scroll and includes bookmarking, find in page, desktop site, extensions, translation, shortcuts, opening a site in its app, saving as PDF and printing More actions are gathered in one expanding panel, rather than the compact menu many users knew.
Extensions Extension management and discovery are available from the new menu without leaving the current page This is one part of the redesign that some participants in Mozilla’s feedback discussion liked.

Mozilla Support’s article “Explore the Firefox for Android menu,” last updated August 30, 2025, says the redesign replaces the previous version. The documented behavior may change in later app releases, so check the current help page and installed version if you are troubleshooting a newer build.

Why some people call the redesign unusable

Complaints in a Mozilla Connect discussion that began in July 2025 and continued with later responses focus on interaction rather than missing data. The posts are self-selected feedback, not a survey of Firefox users, so they demonstrate specific frustrations rather than majority opinion.

Controls moved from familiar positions

People who had built muscle memory around the old button placement report that ordinary actions now take longer to find. A control can still exist while feeling effectively hidden when its position and visual treatment change.

The menu consumes more screen space

Several participants object to the larger, expanding panel. On a small phone, a menu that occupies more of the display can obscure the page and require additional scrolling before the desired command appears.

One-handed use is harder for some layouts

Posts repeatedly mention one-handed operation and phones configured with the address bar at the bottom. Reaching a control near the opposite side or top of a larger panel can require repositioning the phone or using a second hand. That is a valid accessibility and ergonomics concern, even though it is not proof that every user has the same experience.

Tab and new-tab workflows can feel less dense

Some commenters say they see fewer tabs at once in tab browsing or need extra steps for new-tab actions. These reports describe the interaction cost people are experiencing; they do not establish a universal performance or tab-limit change.

Can you switch back to the old menu?

No, not through a supported Firefox setting documented by Mozilla. Mozilla Support’s FAQ answer is explicit: “No. The updated menu replaces the previous version and can’t be reverted.” Installing the general-release app, changing the address-bar position or opening the menu repeatedly will not expose an official rollback control.

Your existing bookmarks, saved sites, browsing history and logins are not described as being removed by the redesign. The change is the interface used to reach them.

What you can and cannot change

Still available

  • Bookmarks and saved sites
  • Browsing history
  • Saved logins
  • Downloads
  • Sync options and settings
  • Website actions such as find in page, desktop site, translation, PDF saving and printing
  • Extension management and discovery from the current page

Not offered as a documented option

  • A switch that restores the previous menu
  • A supported choice between old and new menu designs
  • A Mozilla commitment that the 2026 design work will add a rollback control

If a command seems missing, scroll through the expanding website menu rather than assuming it was removed. If an action remains difficult to reach, Mozilla Connect is the appropriate place to describe the device, address-bar position and exact steps involved; that feedback does not guarantee a change.

Why placement has become such a sensitive issue

Mozilla’s August 25, 2020 “Daylight” announcement for Firefox on Android introduced a broader redesign with a URL bar that could be placed at the top or bottom, Collections, dark themes and a refreshed extensions experience built around GeckoView. That historical design emphasized user control over where key navigation lived, which helps explain why button placement and one-handed access are prominent concerns now.

The older announcement describes that earlier redesign, not a current promise that every menu element remains configurable. Do not treat it as evidence that the current menu can be switched back.

What Mozilla’s newer design direction actually promises

In a May 21, 2026 design article, Mozilla said its newer work extends to mobile through shared colors, icons, copy and design foundations. It described updated tabs, rounded components, revised spacing and a new palette, while saying future interface customization is still being explored.

That direction does not specifically promise a change to Firefox for Android’s menu or an option to restore the former one. A redesign roadmap therefore should not be read as a confirmed fix for the complaints above.

Should you leave Firefox for Android?

That depends on which friction matters most to you. If you rely on extensions, the new in-page extension panel may be useful. If your priority is a compact menu, fast tab scanning or one-handed access with a bottom address bar, the new layout may be sufficiently annoying to justify testing another browser.

Before switching, compare the current versions—not old screenshots—on the phone you actually use. Check these points:

  • Where the address bar and primary navigation controls sit
  • How many tabs are visible in the tab overview
  • How many steps a new tab, bookmark or find-in-page action takes
  • Whether the extensions you need are supported
  • Which interface customizations are officially available

There is no supported two-menu choice inside current Firefox for Android, so the practical decision is to adapt to the new interface, send specific feedback, or evaluate another browser.

Bottom line

The “pure garbage” label captures how strongly some users feel about the redesign, especially its larger menu, relocated controls and one-handed usability. It is not a measured consensus. The concrete, official fact is narrower: Firefox for Android 141 and later replaces the old menu, and Mozilla says users cannot revert to it through a supported option. Whether the new design is unacceptable comes down to how its extra space and interaction steps affect your own phone and habits.
