The XGBOX Viper is a 2004-era mid-tower remembered more for its illuminated front panel, snake-shaped side window and built-in display than for modern airflow. Historical owner comments are mixed and too sparse to establish a reliability record. If you are considering a surviving unit, treat it as a vintage case that needs a careful inspection—especially its bundled power supply and limited 80 mm fan layout—not as a ready-made modern chassis.
What the XGBOX Viper was
Tom’s Hardware reviewed the Viper in a 2004 midi-tower roundup and described it as the successor to an earlier XGBox model. Its distinctive features were visual: a side-door window shaped like a viper, front-panel illumination and a large display. The display showed a clock, interior temperature, elapsed uptime and a blinking snake symbol. The review’s image caption summed up the trade-off as “Big display, little useful info.”
That description still captures the case’s appeal. It can be attractive to someone building a period-correct system or restoring an old machine, but the display should not be confused with a modern hardware-monitoring panel.

| Item | Historical specification |
|---|---|
| Case type | Metal mid-tower |
| Dimensions | 485 × 220 × 535 mm (19.09 × 8.66 × 21.06 in) |
| Weight | 7.6 kg (16.76 lb) |
| Motherboard support | ATX and microATX |
| Expansion slots | Seven |
| External 5.25-inch bays | Four |
| External 3.5-inch bays | Two |
| Internal 3.5-inch bays | Five |
| Front I/O | Two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, audio input and output |
| System-fan mounts | Two 80 mm positions; one 80 mm fan listed as preinstalled |
| Drive-fan position | One 80 mm hard-drive fan position, with one drive fan listed as preinstalled |
| Dust filtration | None listed |
| Drive cage | Fixed |
| Included power supply | 500 W unit listed in the “other” specification |
These specifications make the Viper spacious by early-2000s standards, particularly for optical drives and multiple hard disks. They do not establish support for current graphics-card lengths, CPU-cooler heights, modular-cable routing or modern front-panel connectors. Measure the actual chassis and compare it with the components you intend to install.
What owners reported
Positive 2004 owner report
In a 2004 AnandTech discussion, a user named tubajon wrote that they owned the case and loved it. They praised its expandability, fan options, top handles, front LCD and the included power supply, calling that supply “Very reliable.” This is one owner’s experience, not a controlled test or a product-wide reliability finding.
Reservations about the power supply
Other participants in the same discussion questioned the bundled supply and pointed to its stated +12 V rating. Their practical recommendation was to buy a separate quality PSU. Those comments also remain anecdotal; they do not provide load testing or a failure-rate estimate.
One later noise report
In a 2008 Spanish forum thread, a user identified the bundled unit as a Fortrex FP-500WN and reported a high-pitched noise at startup that returned during demanding workloads. Other participants suggested possible causes and advised replacement, but the thread did not conclusively diagnose the unit. It is evidence of one reported case, not proof that every Viper shipped with a defective supply.

How the design fits a modern build
Cooling and airflow
The documented layout is limited to 80 mm fan positions. That was normal in 2004, but modern systems generally depend on larger, slower fans and more deliberate intake and exhaust paths. The Viper’s lack of a listed dust filter and its fixed drive cage add maintenance and installation constraints. You would need to verify every fan opening, connector, grille condition and available clearance on the particular specimen.
Motherboard and expansion fit
ATX and microATX support and seven expansion slots cover the board formats listed in the period specification. They do not guarantee clearance for a contemporary graphics card, radiator, tall tower cooler or backplate. Check the distance from the expansion slots to the drive cage and front of the case before purchasing components.
Storage and front-panel connections
The four 5.25-inch bays, two external 3.5-inch bays and five internal 3.5-inch bays suit optical drives and older hard-disk arrangements. A current build may instead need 2.5-inch mounting, M.2 storage and USB 3.x or USB-C front-panel headers, none of which are established by the 2004 specification. Plan adapters or external devices only after inspecting the actual wiring.
What to inspect before buying or reusing one
- Confirm the exact chassis. Check dimensions, side-panel shape, drive cage, slot count and all fan openings against the historical description.
- Inspect the power supply label and condition. Record the manufacturer, model, output ratings, connectors, intake grille and signs of dust, corrosion or overheating. The historical 500 W label is not a safety or compatibility endorsement.
- Do not open the PSU. Power supplies contain hazardous stored energy. Replace a questionable unit with a verified modern supply that physically fits, has the required connectors and can meet the system’s actual power demand.
- Check the front-panel electronics. Test the display, lighting, USB, audio and FireWire functions separately. Aging displays, switches and proprietary cables may not be serviceable.
- Measure component clearances. Check graphics-card length and thickness, CPU-cooler height, motherboard standoffs, cable space and drive interference before committing to a build.
- Evaluate airflow and cleanliness. Remove accumulated dust, confirm that the 80 mm mounts are usable and replace noisy or seized fans with correctly sized units after verifying voltage and connector type.
Is the Viper worth using?
It can make sense when appearance, nostalgia or a period-correct restoration is the priority. The illuminated front, snake window, handles and display give it character that most current cases do not reproduce. Its ATX support and plentiful legacy bays can also be useful for an older system.

- Application: Storage protection, can prevent dirt, scratches, damage, impact and wear. This hard case for mouse is lightweight and compact to fit in your backpack or luggage for improved traveling protection.
- Note: Only storage box is sold,Not including the mouse.
It is a poor default choice for a new high-performance build when quiet cooling, dust control, current front I/O, easy cable management or straightforward component compatibility matter more than styling. The case has no published modern thermal, acoustic or reliability testing, and the available owner evidence is contradictory.
How to compare it with alternatives
Use these decision points rather than relying on the 500 W label or a single forum endorsement:
- Physical fit: measured GPU, cooler, radiator and cable clearances.
- Airflow: fan sizes, intake and exhaust locations, filter access and replacement-fan availability.
- Storage: whether your drives require the legacy bays or modern 2.5-inch/M.2 mounting.
- Power: condition and connector compatibility of the existing PSU, plus the cost of a replacement.
- Serviceability: access to front-panel wiring, removable cages and standard parts.
- Priority: whether the Viper’s styling and display justify those compromises for your project.
Bottom line
The XGBOX Viper was a visually distinctive, reasonably expandable case for its time. Owners did praise its looks, handles and bay capacity, while others questioned the bundled PSU; a later forum post described load-related noise from one Fortrex FP-500WN unit. None of that establishes a model-wide defect rate. Buy or reuse one only after inspecting the individual chassis, replacing any unverified PSU and confirming that its 80 mm cooling layout and clearances match the hardware you actually plan to install.
