The Sennheiser HD 280 and HD 280 PRO names are not automatically interchangeable. Sennheiser’s documentation identifies the HD 280-13 as a 300-ohm high-impedance variant, while the official HD 280 PRO specification lists a nominal impedance of 64 ohms. Check the complete model name and impedance before buying a used or marketplace listing.

HD 280 vs HD 280 PRO: the short answer

The most clearly documented difference is impedance. Sennheiser’s instruction manual describes the HD 280-13 as “As HD 280 PRO, but high impedance variant (300 Ω impedance).” The HD 280 PRO product specification lists 64 Ω.

That makes the exact designation more important than the shortened “HD 280” label. A listing that says only “HD 280” could refer to an older or regional variant, so request a photograph of the label, packaging or specification sheet when the impedance is not stated.

Documented model differences

Current product-page status Sennheiser’s cited page says it is no longer available there; regional availability can differ Current product and accessory availability varies by region and listing

The manual establishes the 300-ohm figure for the HD 280-13, but it does not establish that every other specification is identical to the HD 280 PRO. Do not assume the two versions have the same cable, production generation or included items without checking the applicable documentation.

What the HD 280 PRO specification says

For the HD 280 PRO, Sennheiser publishes these manufacturer specifications:

  • Closed, dynamic, circumaural design
  • 64-ohm nominal impedance
  • 8 Hz–25 kHz frequency response
  • 113 dB SPL sensitivity figure
  • 0.1% total harmonic distortion
  • 285 g without cable
  • 6 N contact pressure
  • Coiled cable measuring at least 1.3 m and extending to 3 m
  • 3.5 mm plug with a 6.3 mm adapter
  • Release year stated in the specification: 2003

These are vendor-published figures, not independent laboratory measurements. They describe the HD 280 PRO specification and should not automatically be assigned to the HD 280-13.

Does 300 ohms sound better than 64 ohms?

No reliable sound-quality winner can be determined from the model documents. Impedance alone does not prove that one version has better tuning, detail, bass or isolation. The supplied Sennheiser material contains no controlled head-to-head listening test or independent frequency-response comparison.

Impedance does affect the electrical requirements of the headphone system: a 300-ohm version generally demands more voltage from a source than a 64-ohm version. Whether that matters depends on the output of your interface, amplifier, mixer or other device. Confirm that your equipment can drive the exact variant you are considering rather than choosing on the impedance number alone.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the HD 280 PRO when

  • You want the currently documented 64-ohm version.
  • You need the standard HD 280 PRO specification and a straightforward connection using its 3.5 mm plug or 6.3 mm adapter.
  • You are buying new and want easier generation and replacement-part verification.

Consider the HD 280-13 when

  • You specifically need the 300-ohm high-impedance variant.
  • Your audio equipment is known to provide sufficient voltage for a 300-ohm headphone.
  • The seller can verify “HD 280-13” and the 300-ohm rating rather than using only the generic HD 280 name.

Do not choose based on

  • Claims that the 300-ohm model must sound better.
  • A marketplace title that omits the suffix and impedance.
  • An assumption that every HD 280 accessory or specification fits every generation.

What to check in a used or marketplace listing

  1. Read the exact designation: look for HD 280 PRO or HD 280-13 on the label, not just “HD 280.”
  2. Confirm impedance: verify 64 Ω for the HD 280 PRO or 300 Ω for the HD 280-13.
  3. Check the article or product number: 506845 is associated with the cited HD 280 PRO specification; 004975 with the HD 280-13 product information.
  4. Confirm the accessories: the HD 280 PRO specification lists a coiled cable, 3.5 mm plug and 6.3 mm adapter, but retailer bundles can differ.
  5. Inspect replacement parts: verify the production generation before ordering pads, cable or headband padding.

Replacement pads and maintenance

Sennheiser documents replacement of the ear cushions, headband padding and connecting cable. Its HD 280 PRO accessory page identifies a HD 280 PRO Pad Set (2016+). Check that “2016+” compatibility and the exact model match your headphone before ordering; a generic HD 280 label is not enough.

Because the HD 280-13 is a distinct high-impedance variant and older units may have different generations, confirm fit with the seller or Sennheiser documentation before buying repair parts.

  • New BUNDLE; Genuine Sennheiser replacement Ear pads & Headband Pads in manufactures original packaging.
  • Replacement Earpads & Headband pad for Sennheiser models: HD280, HD280 PRO, HD280 DJ, HD280 SILVER, HD281, HMD280, HMD281, HMD280-XQ.
  • The Earpads and Headband pads are manufactured in leatherette material with a foam core.
  • Tips! Installing the Headband pad: If you own the older model HD280-Pros, the headband pad does take some work to get on. You need to stretch it out a bit to get it to wrap around the top and get seated in the zip channel. Take your time with it - hold it vertically and stretch outward working from top to bottom - repeat a few times and then try to wrap around the top. Keep working at it until one side can join together - once that happens, it's easy to zip it the rest of the way.

Bottom line

For most buyers, the documented HD 280 PRO is the 64-ohm model. The HD 280-13 is the explicitly identified 300-ohm high-impedance variant. Treat “HD 280” without a suffix as ambiguous, verify the impedance and model number, and do not infer a sound-quality advantage from impedance alone.
