It is normally installed with an NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics-driver package, not manually by most users. It is not a program you generally open, and the legitimate runtime is not malware.
What VulkanRT does
VulkanRT is the runtime and loader layer used by Vulkan-enabled applications. The Windows loader is the vulkan-1.dll file. When a game or other application supports Vulkan, it loads that component to reach the Vulkan implementation supplied by the installed graphics driver.
Applications that do not use Vulkan do not load the Vulkan loader. VulkanRT is therefore not required for Windows itself and does not control every type of graphics rendering on the computer.
How VulkanRT got on your computer
Graphics-card vendors commonly install the runtime as part of their normal driver installation process. A driver update can also update the runtime. This explains why VulkanRT may appear in Windows’ installed-program list even though you never downloaded the Vulkan SDK or installed a Vulkan application yourself.

The runtime may support games and other software that use Vulkan, while the driver package remains the component tied to your particular GPU model and Windows version.
Is VulkanRT a virus?
Khronos Group has stated that the legitimate Vulkan runtime is not a virus and has noted that antivirus software has sometimes produced false-positive detections. That statement applies to the genuine runtime installed through a trusted graphics-driver package—not automatically to every file or installer using a similar name.

Checks for a suspicious file
- Look at the file location. The standard Windows loader is
vulkan-1.dll, normally located in a Windows system directory such asC:WindowsSystem32on a 64-bit installation. - Check the file’s digital signature and publisher in its Properties dialog.
- Scan an unexpected copy with reputable, up-to-date security software.
- Do not treat the name shown in Programs and Features alone as proof that a file is authentic.
Khronos also says the Vulkan runtime installer does not install user-mode or kernel-mode services. A service, scheduled task, or executable with an unrelated publisher should be investigated separately rather than assumed to be part of VulkanRT.
Should you uninstall VulkanRT?
Usually, no. Vulkan applications use the loader, so removing the runtime can prevent those applications from using Vulkan until the component is restored. It is not needed by non-Vulkan applications, but that does not make removal a safe or useful cleanup step if you play games or run software that supports Vulkan.

If you are troubleshooting
- Keep the existing runtime while you identify the affected application and GPU.
- Download the current driver for the exact GPU model and operating system from the GPU manufacturer’s official support site.
- Install or repair that driver package; the Vulkan runtime is commonly restored or updated as part of the process.
- Restart Windows and test the Vulkan application again.
Do not assume that uninstalling VulkanRT will fix a general graphics problem, and do not assume it controls DirectX or every other graphics path.
What happens if VulkanRT is missing or damaged?
- A Vulkan application may fail to start, report that Vulkan is unavailable, or fall back to another graphics API.
- Games may show a renderer-selection error even though DirectX-based games continue to work.
- A mismatched or outdated graphics driver can prevent Vulkan support even when a VulkanRT entry remains visible.
Recovery is normally handled by reinstalling or updating the graphics driver that matches the GPU and Windows edition. Driver support varies by vendor and model, so use the manufacturer’s device-specific documentation rather than a generic runtime download.

VulkanRT, Vulkan SDK, and the graphics driver

Seeing VulkanRT does not mean that you installed the developer SDK. Conversely, installing an SDK does not replace the need for a working, vendor-specific graphics driver.

Vulkan support depends on the graphics vendor, GPU model, driver branch, and operating system. NVIDIA’s current support information lists Vulkan 1.4 general-release drivers for Windows and Linux, but that is vendor-specific and can change. NVIDIA also distinguishes its Vulkan SC driver: that driver does not include the Vulkan runtime or loader. Check the official support page for your own GPU vendor and exact model before downloading a driver.
