A reported Firefox–Chrome layout difference involving a side panel and an absolutely positioned child is not enough to establish a Firefox bug. The useful first step is to check which ancestor establishes the child’s containing block, then compare the parent’s dimensions and the child’s inset values in both browsers.
What the CSS-Tricks report does—and does not—show
An archived CSS-Tricks Forums discussion titled “Side Panel that never exceeds the size of the main content div?” describes a side panel using a table-cell layout and an absolutely positioned child. The report says Firefox and Chrome rendered the example differently.
The available report does not identify the browser versions or provide a complete, maintained reproduction. It therefore documents a reported discrepancy, not proof that Firefox has a rendering defect or a confirmed explanation for the difference.
How absolute positioning determines the child’s position
An absolutely positioned element is taken out of normal document flow: surrounding content is laid out as if that element were absent. Its position is calculated relative to its closest ancestor that establishes its containing block; if there is no such ancestor, its containing block is the initial containing block. The top, right, bottom, and left insets help determine its final position. Logical inset properties can express corresponding axes in relation to writing direction. That makes the ancestor chain a key diagnostic. A child may be absolutely positioned as intended but anchored to a different element than the author expects. Its own inset values and the size of the containing block also affect where it appears; removing it from flow means its presence does not make the parent grow as ordinary in-flow content would.
Debug the mismatch in Firefox and Chrome
- Reduce the reproduction. Keep only the relevant parent, absolutely positioned child, and styles needed to reproduce the difference. Use the same HTML and CSS in both browsers.
- Trace the containing block. In each browser’s developer tools, inspect the child’s computed
position, then walk up its ancestors to identify the closest one establishing its containing block. Compare that ancestor chain between browsers. - Compare dimensions and insets. Check the parent and child dimensions, the child’s computed
top,right,bottom, andleftvalues—or its logical insets—and any relevant overflow styling. Confirm that taking the child out of normal flow is intentional. - Test the table-cell layout separately. Replace it temporarily with a simple block layout and see whether the discrepancy remains. This is a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed fix; changing the layout can help isolate which part of the example affects the result.
- Record browser versions. If the mismatch persists in the reduced test, include exact Firefox and Chrome versions and share the minimal HTML and CSS when reporting a suspected browser-engine issue.
What to compare before calling it a browser bug

If these values differ, investigate the computed styles and layout context before trying a browser-specific workaround. If they match but the rendered result still differs, the minimal test and version details make a suspected engine issue much easier to assess.
