text-wrap-mode controls whether a text block may wrap at soft line-break opportunities. Set it to wrap (the default) to allow wrapping or nowrap to keep the content on one line, even if that causes overflow. It does not choose how lines are composed; that job belongs to text-wrap-style. The text-wrap shorthand can set both decisions together.
What text-wrap-mode controls
CSS Text Module Level 4 separates wrapping into two decisions: whether soft wrapping is permitted and, if it is, which layout approach the browser should use. text-wrap-mode makes the first decision.

wrap is the default mode. Neither value inserts hard line breaks; an explicit <br> remains a forced break.

Allow ordinary wrapping

Keep a label on one line

}Use this only when overflow is acceptable or separately handled. A long label can extend beyond its container, overlap adjacent content, or create horizontal scrolling depending on the surrounding layout and overflow rules.
Use the shorthand

}The shorthand accepts a mode, a style, or both. A style keyword such as balance keeps wrapping enabled while requesting a different line-composition strategy; nowrap sets the mode that prohibits soft wrapping.

text-wrap-mode versus text-wrap-style
text-wrap-mode answers “may this text wrap?” text-wrap-style answers “how should the browser arrange lines when wrapping is allowed?” The W3C describes the style property as a trade-off among speed, quality, visual style, and stability (CSS Text Module Level 4 Working Draft, 14 August 2026).

These style values affect composition only when wrapping is permitted. Applying text-wrap-style cannot make nowrap text wrap.

Choosing the right setting

Stopping text from wrapping safely
- Apply
text-wrap-mode: nowrap(ortext-wrap: nowrap) to the specific element, not an entire page or broad content region. - Inspect the element at narrow viewport widths and with the longest realistic label.
- Decide how overflow should behave. If clipping or scrolling is appropriate, configure the element or its container with the relevant
overflowrule; otherwise prefer a wrapping or truncation design that preserves access to the content. - Test adjacent controls, zoom levels, and localization, because a one-line constraint leaves less room for longer translations.
Compatibility and specification status
MDN lists text-wrap-mode as Baseline 2024 and newly available since October 2024. Its reference page still recommends checking current support data (MDN: text-wrap-mode). Support for individual text-wrap-style values can differ, so check each value before making it a required part of a design (MDN: text-wrap-style). The shorthand reference is at MDN: text-wrap.
The syntax is defined in the CSS Text Module Level 4 Working Draft dated 14 August 2026. A Working Draft can change, so treat the specification as evolving and use feature checks or fallbacks where a particular style value is important.
