Choose a rack power distribution unit (PDU) by working from the electrical source outward: size it for the rack’s maximum continuous load, match the inlet voltage, phase, current and plug, verify outlet types and count, confirm the rack form factor and cable path, then select the monitoring, switching and redundancy features you actually need. Finish by checking certification marks and visible ratings on the unit.

A PDU distributes AC power from utility service, a UPS, a generator or another source to multiple devices. Rack PDUs add chassis and mounting options for enclosures and may provide local or networked measurement and control.

1. Size the PDU for the rack’s real electrical load

Start with every device that may connect to the PDU, not just the equipment you expect to install on day one. Record each device’s nameplate voltage, amperage, phase and frequency, and use measured draw where reliable. Also record the upstream branch-circuit rating and the supply characteristics available at the rack.

Build a load schedule

  • List servers, storage, network equipment, KVMs, lighting and any other powered accessory.
  • Note each device’s required voltage and plug type.
  • Calculate the expected simultaneous load, including planned additions and startup behavior where relevant.
  • Compare that load with the PDU’s input rating, total output rating and any per-outlet or branch limits.

Select a PDU that matches the installation and leaves practical headroom for continuous operation and growth. Eaton’s selection guidance focuses on supporting the maximum load of the individual rack, while Schneider Electric emphasizes capacity planning for future equipment. Do not treat a higher ampere label as permission to exceed the upstream circuit or the rating of the inlet cord.

Schneider Electric reported in 2024 that vendors may offer roughly 100–700 rack-PDU models before a product selector narrows the field. That range is a reminder to filter by the electrical details first, rather than choosing by outlet count or brand alone.

2. Match the inlet, supply and cord

The inlet is the compatibility gate. Confirm all of these items against the receptacle, busway tap or other upstream connector:

  • Supply voltage and allowable voltage range
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply
  • Available amperage and upstream breaker rating
  • Inlet connector and regional plug standard
  • Frequency
  • Cord length, exit direction and bend clearance

A PDU with the correct output sockets is still unusable if its inlet does not mate with the facility feed or cannot be routed without stressing the connector. Check whether the cord exits from the top or bottom, where the rack’s power feed enters, and whether the installed bend radius leaves the door and side panels clear.

3. Choose outlet types, count and retention

Count every required connection and match each device plug. In data-center racks, IEC C13 outlets are common for ordinary equipment, while higher-power devices may require C19 receptacles. Hybrid outlet layouts can reduce adapters when a rack contains both types. Regional NEMA or IEC variants must match the plugs actually used at your site.

Allow for physical clearance

Power bricks and right-angle plugs can block neighboring sockets even when the electrical count looks adequate. Check outlet spacing, orientation and the location of cable exits before ordering. Reserve spare outlets for growth, temporary equipment and maintenance rather than filling every socket on the first installation.

Prevent accidental unplugging

Use locking outlets, plug-retention clips or compatible retention cords where a loose cable could interrupt service. Verify that the retention method works with the specific plug and does not prevent deliberate maintenance removal.

  • OUTPUT: 10 Rear NEMA 5-15R Outlets; INPUT: NEMA 5-15P straight plug with 15 ft power cord
  • VERSATILE RACKMOUNT OPTIONS: Allows for the PDU to be installed vertically or horizontally
  • ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Network-grade plugs and outlets, durable metal housing, and cord retention tray
  • 3-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY (This unit does not provide surge suppression)

4. Select the rack form factor and cable route

Use a 1U or 2U horizontal PDU when rack-unit space is available at the front or rear. A 0U vertical PDU mounts along the enclosure rail or side and preserves rack units for equipment. The best position is the one that keeps outlet access, airflow and cable serviceability practical.

Check before purchase

  • Included mounting brackets and whether they fit your rack rail
  • Chassis length and clearance behind doors or side panels
  • Top, bottom or side cable entry
  • Outlet orientation and access after equipment is installed
  • Available vertical space for a 0U model

Measure the rack and trace the intended cable path. A PDU that technically fits may still be a poor choice if its cord crosses a door, blocks a rail or forces sharp bends.

5. Choose the right intelligence level

Pay for measurement and control when they solve an operational problem; a basic strip is preferable when the rack only needs dependable distribution.

PDU type What it provides Best fit Important limitation
Basic Fixed outlets and distribution, with the unit’s listed protection and ratings Simple racks with local access and stable loads No built-in load telemetry or remote outlet control
Metered input Aggregate or branch-level current and power visibility, locally and/or over a network depending on model Capacity tracking and preventing an overloaded feed Does not identify the consumption of each individual device
Metered outlet Measurement at individual outlets; Eaton describes this as suitable for billing-grade accuracy Detailed capacity accounting, tenant allocation or device-level analysis Costs more and still requires correct electrical sizing
Managed or switched Monitoring plus remote control of individual outlets Remote rebooting, disabling unused sockets and controlled provisioning Remote switching can interrupt equipment, so access and change controls matter

Advanced metering can support energy-efficiency measurement, but telemetry does not increase the PDU’s electrical capacity. Specify the network interface, supported protocol, authentication and environmental-sensor options if remote management is required; these vary by model.

6. Decide whether you need source redundancy

ATS PDU for single-corded equipment

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) PDU provides a redundant power option for a single-corded network device by accepting two independent AC sources and transferring the load when the preferred source is unavailable. Both feeds must be present, correctly rated and coordinated. An ATS cannot create redundancy when both inputs come from the same failed breaker, UPS or upstream path.

Dual-input and hot-swap arrangements

Some hot-swap PDUs use dual AC inputs and a manual transfer switch so compatible UPS systems can be maintained or replaced without interrupting connected equipment. Confirm compatibility with the UPS models, transfer procedure and facility switching plan before relying on this feature.

Two PDUs for dual-corded equipment

Equipment with two power supplies can use separate PDUs on separate upstream circuits or UPS paths. Verify that each supply can carry the required load and that the device’s power-sharing behavior is suitable for the planned failure scenario.

7. Verify safety listings and visible ratings

Choose a listing or certification appropriate to the installation’s country, electrical code and application. Inspect the actual PDU for its certification mark and for voltage, current, phase and other electrical ratings that are visible without removing wiring or interior parts.

UL Solutions explains that its UL Mark means representative samples were tested and evaluated against requirements in the applicable standards. The mark is not a substitute for checking the product’s exact ratings, inlet configuration or local installation rules. Have a qualified electrician or facilities professional resolve questions about overcurrent protection, grounding, coordination and code compliance.

8. Use this purchase checklist

  1. Write down the rack’s maximum present and planned load, supply voltage, phase, frequency and upstream breaker rating.
  2. Match the PDU inlet connector, amperage, voltage and cord length to the facility feed.
  3. Count required outlets and match C13, C19, NEMA or other receptacles to the equipment plugs.
  4. Check spacing, retention options and access for bulky or locking plugs.
  5. Choose 1U, 2U or 0U mounting after measuring rails, doors, depth and cable entry.
  6. Select basic, metered-input, metered-outlet or switched capability based on the operational task.
  7. For redundancy, verify independent feeds, ATS behavior or dual-PDU paths end to end.
  8. Confirm certification, visible ratings, warranty and the management interface before ordering.
  9. Recheck the exact manufacturer model number; the phrase “rack mount power distribution unit PDU” alone does not guarantee electrical or physical compatibility.
