What the user manual covers
The manual is the day-to-day operating reference. It explains safety, front-panel controls, screen layout, default and factory setups, vertical and horizontal controls, triggering, acquisition and display modes, automatic measurements, cursors, math and FFT, setup and waveform storage, printing and file transfer, utility menus, system information, and user-accessible diagnostic functions. It also discusses battery-related operation where fitted and points to separate documentation for application modules.
It does not replace the service manual for board-level troubleshooting, performance verification, parts replacement, or factory adjustment.

|---|---|
| Analog channels | Four, plus an external trigger input |
| Nominal bandwidth | 300 MHz |
| Maximum real-time sample rate | 2.5 GS/s |
| Digitizer resolution | 9-bit, with separate digitizers for simultaneous channel sampling |
| Display | Full-VGA color LCD |
| Waveform capture rate | Approximately 3,600 waveforms per second, as stated in the cited equipment description |
| Automatic measurements | 25 listed measurements in the cited model description |
| FFT | Standard feature in the cited listing |
| Probe interface | TekProbe interface for compatible active, differential and current probes, with automatic scaling and units |
| Bandwidth-limit choices | 20 MHz, 150 MHz or Full, subject to model and operating conditions |
| Vertical scale ranges | Service documentation lists 1 mV/div–10 V/div at 1 MΩ and 1 mV/div–1 V/div at 50 Ω |
These are headline capabilities, not unconditional guarantees. Input impedance, vertical scale, bandwidth-limit selection, probe, temperature and operating mode affect the usable limits. Use the detailed tables in the service manual for specification and derating questions.
First-use procedure
- Inspect before powering. Check the cord, insulation, BNC connectors, probe interfaces, display, controls and cooling vents. Do not use a unit with exposed conductors, damaged insulation or cracked connectors.
- Start with inputs disconnected. Power up without probes or signal cables and let the startup sequence finish.
- Recall a known setup. Press SAVE/RECALL and recall the factory setup when the previous owner’s configuration is unknown.
- Connect and identify the probe. Set the on-screen attenuation to match the physical probe, and connect the ground lead only to a safe earth-referenced point.
- Compensate the probe. Use the built-in probe-compensation output when available and adjust the probe until the square wave has correctly aligned transitions.
- Configure a channel. Enable the channel, then review coupling, volts/div, position, bandwidth limit and input impedance. Use autoset only as an initial arrangement.
- Stabilize triggering. Confirm source, level, slope and trigger mode. An unstable trace is usually a connection or trigger issue before it is an acquisition failure.
- Validate measurements. Apply automatic measurements for routine frequency, period, amplitude, rise time or duty cycle, then use cursors to check that the selected waveform feature is the one you intended.
Run built-in diagnostics safely
The user manual places the tests under Utility → System Diags. Available controls include Execute, Loop: Once, Loop: Always, Loop: Until Fail, Error Log and page controls for reviewing errors.
Rank #2
- 2 Analog channels
- 70 MHz bandwidth
- 2 GS/s Sampling rate
- 5 M record length on all channels
- 9-inch WVGA color display with 15 horizontal grids shows 50% more signal
- Disconnect every probe, cable and signal source from the inputs.
- Open the Utility menu and navigate to System Diags.
- Run the test once before selecting a continuous loop.
- If it fails, open Error Log and record the exact message, serial number, firmware information and test conditions.
- Reboot and repeat once with all inputs still disconnected to establish whether the result is repeatable.
A failed test does not identify every defective assembly, and a passed test is not proof of specification compliance or traceable calibration. For repeatable failures, use the service manual’s troubleshooting and performance-verification procedures; quarantine equipment used for regulated or safety-critical measurements until its condition is established.

Diagnostics, verification and calibration are different
- Diagnostics are internal tests for fault indications.
- Performance verification compares measured behavior with published specifications using external standards.
- Calibration or adjustment changes internal calibration constants or settings.
The service documentation says successful adjustment updates the calibration-due date and time; performance verification alone does not. Adjustment requires specialized equipment such as a suitable DC source, leveled sine-wave generator, fast-rise generator, BNC cables and BNC tees. It is a qualified-service task, not a beginner procedure.
Never open the chassis while connected to mains power, use a grounded probe on a mains-referenced circuit without an appropriate safety plan, or assume a diagnostic pass establishes accuracy. Tektronix currently lists the TDS3034B for calibration quotation through its calibration service; availability, turnaround and price require a quote. A Tektronix service quote can check model and serial-number options.

Checklist for a used TDS3034B
Functional checks
- Verify all four channels, knobs, keys, menus, trigger controls and display areas.
- Run diagnostics with inputs disconnected and save any error-log result.
- Confirm save/recall, probe-compensation output and required external communications.
- Watch for reboots, freezes, excessive fan noise or power-supply symptoms after warm-up.
Measurement checks
- Use a known reference signal and check amplitude and timing at more than one scale.
- Check 1 MΩ and 50 Ω operation where appropriate, bandwidth-limit behavior and probe attenuation.
- Request a recent calibration certificate when measurements must be documented or traceable.
Provenance and accessories
- Record the serial number and ask about repairs or modifications.
- Confirm installed application modules and that supplied probes are genuine and correctly matched.
- Treat “powers on” as a minimal condition, not evidence of measurement accuracy.
Common symptoms and first checks
| Symptom | Initial checks |
|---|---|
| No waveform | Channel enable, probe factor, coupling, trigger source and signal ground |
| Unstable waveform | Trigger source, level, slope, mode and signal amplitude |

Keep, service or replace?
Keep it
Keep the TDS3034B when four simultaneous analog channels, 300 MHz bandwidth, existing TekProbe accessories or the familiar interface matter and the instrument passes functional and performance checks.
Service it
Service is sensible when the fault is understood, specialized options are costly to replace, or documented calibration is worth preserving. As a vendor-specific U.S. example, National Test Equipment displayed $468 standard calibration, $734 Z540 calibration with data and a $3,380 flat-rate repair price when crawled; verify current pricing directly at its service page.
Best Value
- Comfortable to touch, make the operation more smoothly.
- Perfect to replace the old knobs and switch covers.
- The power switch cover is suitable for Tektronix TDS210 / TDS220 / TDS224 / TDS1002 / TDS1012 / TDS2002 / TDS2012 / TDS2014 / TDS2024, etc.

- 4 Types: Big Knob Cap, Small Knob Cap, Power Switch Cover, Big Knob Cap+ Small Knob Cap+ Power Switch Cover (Optional)
Replace it
Replacement is usually more practical when multiple channels, the display, acquisition system or power supply are unreliable, or when warranty, modern software, deeper memory or current connectivity is essential. Tektronix Encore price signals shown April 2, 2026 were $600 for a refurbished TBS1072C (70 MHz, two channels), $828 for TBS1102C (100 MHz, two channels), $1,314 for TBS1202C (200 MHz, two channels) and $289 for TBS1052C-EDU (50 MHz, two channels). These are lower-channel-count alternatives, not drop-in equivalents; compare required channels, bandwidth, memory, trigger functions, interfaces, probes and calibration before switching. See the Encore listings.
The Bottom Line
For a TDS3034B, start with Tektronix user manual 071095704, then use the programmer, service and option manuals for their specific jobs. Test an older unit before spending on calibration or repair, and choose replacement equipment by required channels, bandwidth, interfaces and calibration needs rather than age alone.
