PassMark and Geekbench are not interchangeable. Their scores use different workloads, scaling methods and scoring systems, so a PassMark CPU Mark of 20,000 cannot be treated as equivalent to a Geekbench score of 20,000. Use Geekbench first for cross-platform comparisons, PassMark for PC-oriented ranking and broad threaded throughput, and an application- or game-specific test when the purchase depends on one workload.

As of August 18, 2026, the latest first-party Geekbench release identified here is Geekbench 7, announced July 23, 2026. PassMark’s public CPU charts were updated July 31, 2026. Always record the benchmark version before comparing results.

What is actually being compared?

“PassMark” normally means the CPU portion of PassMark PerformanceTest: CPU Mark and its separate Single Thread score. PassMark Rating is a broader system score combining CPU, memory, disk and graphics, so it is not a CPU-only comparison. See PassMark’s explanation at PassMark result explanation.

“Geekbench” normally means the CPU benchmark’s single-core and multi-core scores. Geekbench also offers separate GPU Compute and newer AI-oriented products. Both benchmark families report relative points, not a shared physical unit.

How PassMark measures CPU performance

PassMark PerformanceTest combines eight CPU tests into CPU Mark, including multithreaded and single-threaded work, compression, physics, floating-point and integer operations, sorting and related tasks. PassMark describes the suite and its methodology at its CPU test information page and the PerformanceTest product page. The weighting and formula are PassMark’s proprietary scoring method, not a universal definition of processor speed.

CPU Mark

The multithreaded portions attempt to use available logical CPUs. Consequently, CPU Mark can reward additional cores and threads when the workload scales across them. It is useful for broad PC comparisons, but it is not a guaranteed prediction of every render, compile, game or scientific program.

Single Thread

PassMark’s Single Thread test uses one logical CPU core. It provides a PC-focused view of lightly threaded performance and everyday responsiveness, while still reflecting PassMark’s own code and scoring choices.

PassMark charts and averages

Public charts combine user-submitted baselines with internal testing. Cooling, BIOS settings, power limits, memory, background processes, overclocking and laptop operating mode can all change an uploaded result. PassMark also notes that PerformanceTest V10, introduced in March 2020, changed algorithms; older versions are not necessarily directly comparable. Details are in the V10 results FAQ and the score-differences FAQ.

How Geekbench measures CPU performance

Geekbench is designed as a cross-platform CPU and GPU benchmark for Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux. Its CPU results are reported separately for single-core and multi-core performance. The vendor describes integer and floating-point workloads, realistic data sets and application-oriented tasks at the official overview.

Single-core and multi-core workloads

Geekbench 6 grouped CPU work into integer and floating-point sections. Its multi-core design used shared tasks rather than simply assigning an independent copy to every thread; the documented internals are available in Geekbench 6 benchmark internals. Geekbench 7 changes the workload mix, including media-processing tasks for audio and video encoding, decoding and processing. Therefore, Geekbench 6 and 7 results must be labeled separately; they are not an unchanged scale.

PassMark vs. Geekbench at a glance

Question PassMark Geekbench
Primary purpose PC-oriented component ranking and broad CPU throughput Compact, application-oriented cross-platform comparison
CPU metrics CPU Mark and Single Thread Single-core and multi-core
Platforms Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS editions Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS
Cross-platform use Available, but public usage is especially PC-ranking focused Core design goal and usually the natural first choice
Multithreading Suite includes tests attempting to use all logical CPUs Scaling depends on Geekbench’s shared-task workload design
Public results User baselines and internal testing; charts updated regularly Public real-user result browser and averages
Main limitation Environment-dependent charts and proprietary weighting Synthetic score cannot replace a long application or thermal test

Which benchmark is better for single-core performance?

Neither is universally better. Geekbench single-core is convenient for a quick Windows-versus-Mac, phone-versus-phone or architecture comparison. PassMark Single Thread is useful when comparing PC processor models inside PassMark’s database. Different code, libraries, compilers, operating-system paths, memory behavior and formulas can change the ordering. “Single-core performance” is a category, not one universally measured quantity.

Which benchmark is better for multi-core performance?

PassMark CPU Mark can be useful for broad, highly parallel PC comparisons because its suite runs simultaneous tests across logical CPUs. Geekbench multi-core is useful for application-oriented and cross-platform comparisons. Core count, thread count, scheduler behavior, memory bandwidth, power limits, cooling and sustained boost all affect both results.

A short benchmark can show burst performance while a long encode, render or compile exposes thermal throttling. Video encoding, 3D rendering, software compilation, compression, virtualization and scientific workloads can rank processors differently, so neither multi-core score predicts every multithreaded application.

Choose by workload, not by a universal winner

Your goal Start with Why and cautions
Desktop CPU model ranking PassMark CPU Mark plus Single Thread Broad PC database; user results vary by environment.
Office responsiveness Geekbench single-core or PassMark Single Thread More relevant than all-core throughput, but software and OS behavior still matter.
Video rendering or encoding The exact application, then a multi-core score Codec, GPU acceleration, memory and cooling can dominate.
3D rendering Renderer-specific benchmark Separate CPU-only from GPU-assisted rendering.
Software compilation Compile-time test Project structure, compiler, storage, RAM, cache and scheduling affect results.
Gaming Game benchmarks Engine behavior, GPU, resolution, cache and frame-time consistency matter; neither score is sufficient.
Phone comparison Same-version Geekbench Thermal limits and performance modes can change results.
PC versus Mac Geekbench plus native application tests Native versus emulated software can reverse the practical result.
Used-PC evaluation PassMark chart plus a sustained run Confirm cooling, power settings and background load.
Whole-system diagnosis PassMark’s separate CPU, memory, disk and graphics tests Do not confuse PassMark Rating with CPU Mark.

Why PassMark and Geekbench rankings disagree

  • Workload mix: each suite emphasizes different operations and libraries.
  • Scaling: a processor with many efficiency or performance cores may scale differently in each multi-core test.
  • Platform software: operating-system scheduling, compiler choices and optimized libraries affect execution.
  • Memory and architecture: cache, bandwidth and latency influence results; PassMark notes that its physics test can depend on memory speed and bandwidth.
  • Power and cooling: laptops and compact systems may sustain different clocks despite using the same processor model.
  • Version: Geekbench 6 versus 7 and pre- versus post-PerformanceTest V10 results are different comparisons.

A disagreement is not proof that one benchmark is broken. It usually means the processors have different strengths, or the test conditions are not equivalent.

How to run a fair comparison

PassMark PerformanceTest

  1. Install PerformanceTest from PassMark’s official product page.
  2. Open the program and choose Tests → Run All Tests (labels can vary by edition or revision).
  3. Use CPU Mark and Single Thread for processor comparisons; treat PassMark Rating as a whole-system result.
  4. Choose Baseline → Upload Baseline to Web if you need a public result. PassMark says public graphs update once per day and a CPU generally needs at least two samples to appear.

Geekbench

  1. Install the same major Geekbench version on both systems.
  2. Close unnecessary applications and connect laptops to power where appropriate.
  3. Set equivalent performance or power modes.
  4. Run the CPU benchmark and record both single-core and multi-core scores.
  5. Save or publish each result so the device, operating system and version remain visible.
  6. Repeat an unusual result instead of relying on one run.

Record the conditions

  • Benchmark name and complete version
  • Operating-system version
  • CPU model, core count and thread count
  • Device or motherboard and RAM configuration
  • Power mode, cooling and plugged-in or battery state
  • Whether the score is a public user submission or controlled review result
  • Date accessed

How to read online charts without being misled

Compare only scores from the same benchmark and version. A ratio such as “20% faster” is meaningful only within that benchmark under reasonably comparable conditions; it cannot be transferred between PassMark and Geekbench. Check sample size, result spread, date, device profile and whether overclocked systems are included. An unusually high score, missing version, incomplete device identification or heavily tuned operating system deserves caution.

For laptops and phones, identify the power profile and look for sustained testing. The same processor can perform differently because manufacturers choose different power limits, fan curves and temperature targets.

Bottom line

Use Geekbench as the first reference for broad Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS comparisons. Use PassMark CPU Mark and Single Thread for PC-focused model rankings and a second view of threaded and lightly threaded behavior. For gaming, professional software, compiling, rendering or long mobile workloads, verify the decision with a benchmark running that actual application and, where relevant, a sustained thermal test.
