LPS usually means “Limited Power Source.” It is a safety classification indicating that a power supply is designed and evaluated to limit the voltage, current, output power and fault energy available at its output under specified test conditions. LPS does not identify a plug type, guarantee compatibility, or prove that an adapter is UL-approved.
What “Limited Power Source” means
LPS is used in power-supply safety requirements such as IEC 62368-1, which replaced IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 for relevant information-technology and audio/video equipment. You may see the designation on a wall adapter, internal AC/DC module, DIN-rail supply, or in an equipment installation manual. The normal expansion is confirmed by UniFive’s adapter guide and UL documentation.
An LPS design limits the energy that can reach a load during normal operation and foreseeable faults. Depending on the source design and applicable standard, limits can be achieved through inherent impedance, current limiting, power limiting, or other protective circuitry. The objective is to reduce fire and dangerous-energy hazards if wiring is damaged, a component overheats, or the output is shorted.
LPS is therefore a safety designation, not a voltage standard or power-conversion technology.

What is limited?
- Output voltage, including open-circuit voltage
- Normal operating current
- Maximum output power or apparent power
- Short-circuit and fault current
- The response of current- or power-limiting circuitry
The exact limits depend on voltage, source type, limiting method, fault condition and the edition of the applicable standard. A commonly cited IEC 62368-1 case for sources at 30 V or less is no more than 8 A and 100 W, with an applicable SELV-related open-circuit-voltage limit. For outputs above 30 V and up to 60 V, the allowable current can be voltage-dependent; one summary gives a relationship such as 150/Vout. These figures are not a universal rule for every LPS supply. See the technical explanations from GlobTek and Bel Fuse.
What LPS does not tell you
It does not automatically mean low voltage
An LPS output is subject to voltage restrictions, but LPS describes limited available energy, not simply “low voltage.” A supply marked 12 V DC, 2 A, LPS is both low voltage and limited power; the terms are not synonyms.
It does not make the mains side safe
LPS reduces particular output-energy and fire hazards under the standard’s test conditions. It does not make input mains safe to touch, eliminate shock or burn risks, or replace insulation, grounding, fusing, enclosure and installation requirements. The supply must still be used as its manufacturer specifies.

It is not automatically a certification mark
The letters LPS alone are not equivalent to a UL Listing, CSA certification or CE marking. Verify the actual approval mark, certification information, datasheet or report in a recognized database. UL explains that its certification mark—not merely a claim printed on a label—is what identifies products covered by its certification or follow-up service: UL power-supply category information.
It is not a compatibility guarantee
Two LPS supplies can have different voltages, current capacities, connectors, polarity, regulation, ripple, isolation, startup behavior and environmental approvals. For example, a 24 V, 4.2 A supply is not a replacement for a 12 V, 2 A adapter simply because both carry an LPS label.
LPS compared with related labels
| Label | General meaning |
|---|---|
| LPS | Limited Power Source; limits available output energy under an applicable safety standard. |
| Class 2 | A separate limited-power category used in U.S. requirements such as NEC Article 725 and UL 1310. |
| Class II | Double or reinforced insulation for shock protection; Roman-numeral Class II is not Class 2 power limitation. |
| SELV | A safety extra-low-voltage concept focused primarily on voltage and protection against electric shock. |
| PS1 / PS2 | IEC 62368-1 electrical-energy-source categories with their own specified levels. |
| UL, CSA, CE | Approval or conformity marks, not synonyms for LPS. |
These concepts can appear together, but none should be treated as interchangeable. Bel’s power FAQ distinguishes LPS from NEC Class 2, while UL documentation discusses LPS, PS1, PS2 and Class 2 separately.

Why equipment specifies an LPS supply
Limiting available energy can simplify downstream equipment and installation design. Depending on the complete system, wiring method, enclosure, product standard and local code, an LPS output may permit less demanding fire-protection, spacing or wiring provisions than an unrestricted source. That benefit is not automatic for every installation; consult the applicable code and the equipment manufacturer. Background is available in Bel Fuse’s safety-standards paper and UL 508A Supplement SA.
How to replace an LPS adapter safely
Check every item below; matching only the voltage and plug is insufficient for safety-critical or industrial equipment.
- Output voltage: Match the device’s specified voltage. Never substitute a higher voltage unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
- Output type: Confirm DC versus AC.
- Polarity: For barrel connectors, verify center-positive or center-negative.
- Current rating: The replacement should normally provide at least the required current. A higher rating is generally acceptable only when all other electrical characteristics match; the device draws the current it needs.
- Wattage: Confirm that voltage × current meets the device requirement.
- Connector: Match barrel dimensions, pin arrangement, locking connector or USB interface.
- Input range: Check local mains voltage and frequency.
- Safety designation: If the equipment requires LPS, use documentation that explicitly supports that requirement.
- Environment: Check temperature, moisture, ventilation, altitude and mounting conditions.
- Approvals: Commercial, industrial, medical and fixed installations may require specific UL, CSA, IEC, CE or other approvals.
Examples and edge cases
Higher current is not the same as higher voltage
A regulated 12 V, 5 A LPS supply can often power a 12 V, 2 A device, provided connector, polarity, isolation, transient behavior and approvals are suitable. A 15 V supply is not an acceptable substitute merely because its current rating is lower or higher.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Loads with unusual startup demand
Motors, heaters, lamps, amplifiers and battery chargers may draw startup or transient current that trips an LPS limiter even when their printed running current appears acceptable. Check the device documentation and the supply’s overload behavior.
“LPS” may be a model-series prefix
Manufacturers also use LPS in model names. MEAN WELL lists LPS-50, LPS-75 and LPS-100 open-frame families in its catalog: official catalog. A series name does not, by itself, prove that a particular unit has been evaluated as a Limited Power Source. Read the exact datasheet and approval markings.
USB-C supplies
USB-C Power Delivery adapters negotiate voltage and current profiles. An LPS label does not tell you which profiles are available or whether a device will negotiate successfully.

When to obtain professional verification
Have the manufacturer, qualified electrician or engineer verify the supply for fixed wiring, industrial control panels, medical equipment, fire or security systems, hazardous locations, outdoor or wet environments, battery charging, motor loads, or any application with a specific LPS, Class 2, SELV, PS1/PS2 or listing requirement.
For purchasing, choose the required voltage and current first, then confirm the LPS documentation, enclosure, isolation, thermal ratings and approvals. Open-frame modules such as MEAN WELL’s LPS families require suitable enclosure and installation; they are not automatically substitutes for enclosed wall adapters. Distributor listings such as LPS-100-24 and LPS-50-24 are examples, not universal recommendations. Prices and stock change by date, quantity and destination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a non-LPS adapter if my device specifies LPS?
Only if the equipment documentation and applicable installation rules permit it. Otherwise choose a supply with documented LPS compliance; electrical compatibility alone may not satisfy the safety requirement.
Can an LPS supply power equipment that does not mention LPS?
Usually, yes, when voltage, current, connector, polarity, regulation and other requirements match. Startup surges, isolation, noise and application-specific approvals can still prevent compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes the word LPS prove an adapter is genuine?
No. Confirm the manufacturer, model, datasheet and certification information. A model prefix or an unverified label is not proof of compliance.
The Bottom Line
LPS normally means Limited Power Source: a supply designed to restrict available output energy and fault current. Treat it as a safety classification, not a universal compatibility or approval mark. Before using a replacement, verify voltage, AC/DC type, polarity, connector, current, startup behavior, environment and required certifications.
