Usually, this is normal. A CPU cooler does not have to cover every visible millimeter of the processor’s integrated heat spreader (IHS). What matters is firm, reasonably centered contact over the heat-producing die or chiplets, correct socket hardware, and enough cooling capacity for the processor. Full IHS coverage is not required for effective cooling, as ARCTIC explains.
Partial coverage becomes concerning when the cooler misses the important central or chiplet area, sits loosely or at an angle, uses the wrong mounting parts, or is followed by overheating and throttling.
What you are actually looking at
The metal surface you see is normally the integrated heat spreader, not the entire silicon area that generates heat.
- CPU package or substrate: The larger board-like package beneath the lid.
- Die or chiplets: Silicon regions that produce most of the heat. Their location varies by processor.
- IHS: The metal cap that spreads heat across a larger area.
- Cooler cold plate or base: The metal surface pressed against the IHS.
- Fin stack: The aluminum structure that releases heat into airflow.
The IHS extends beyond the hottest silicon so it can spread heat and provide a durable mounting surface. Therefore, an exposed strip around the cooler base is not automatically a defect.

Why a smaller-looking base can work
Hotspot placement matters
Cooling depends on transferring heat from the die into the base, not on matching the outer outline of the lid. Pressure distribution and hotspot location can matter more than the largest possible contact area. Noctua’s technical explanation describes these effects and notes that AMD AM5’s CCD region is toward the south side of the socket: contact-quality guidance.
A larger, well-designed base can help spread heat, but a large plate that places poor pressure over the heat source is not automatically better.
Cooler geometry is intentional
Bases may be narrower, offset, convex, or concave to suit a platform, avoid memory and motherboard conflicts, or support several socket generations. Modern IHSs are not perfectly flat. Noctua explains why some bases use deliberate convexity and fine grooves: baseplate design FAQ.

Thermal paste: what the imprint tells you
Thermal interface material (TIM) fills microscopic surface imperfections and voids between the IHS and cooler. It is not a substitute for a cooler floating above the CPU or for a major mechanical gap; see Intel’s TIM explanation.
Follow the cooler or CPU maker’s application pattern. AMD recommends a uniform layer when an approved heatsink is not being used (AMD guidance). Intel advises cleaning old TIM and replacing it whenever the processor or heatsink is reinstalled (Intel installation guidance).

- Usually normal: Some IHS edges remain relatively dry while the intended contact area has a continuous imprint.
- Investigate: A large untouched patch in the center, a strongly tilted imprint, or paste concentrated on one edge.
- Do not do: Add a thick blob to bridge a physical gap. Excess TIM can increase thermal resistance and make diagnosis harder.
How to check whether the cooler is making proper contact
- Shut the computer down and let the CPU cool.
- Remove the cooler using its manufacturer’s procedure.
- Inspect the paste imprint on both the IHS and the cooler base. Look for a clear, centered imprint over the intended contact region and no untouched central patch.
- Check for rocking, a tilted imprint, trapped cables, missing hardware, or protective film still attached to the base.
- Clean both surfaces with suitable isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free material.
- Apply fresh TIM in the specified amount or pattern.
- Lower the cooler vertically and tighten screws gradually in an alternating pattern where applicable.
- Verify the exact socket bracket, backplate, standoffs, spacers, and washers.
- Reconnect the fan to the correct header, or power the pump and radiator fans if using an AIO.
- Repeat the same workload and fan settings, then compare temperatures and clock behavior.
Do not repeatedly remount with the same paste; replace it after each removal as Intel recommends.
Signs that partial coverage is harmless
- The system boots and remains stable.
- Temperatures are broadly consistent with the exact CPU, ambient temperature, workload, and motherboard power settings.
- The processor sustains expected boost behavior without thermal throttling during normal use.
- The cooler is firmly clamped and cannot be rocked.
- The paste imprint is broad and centered over the cooler’s designed footprint.
- The cooler appears on the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the CPU and motherboard.
There is no universal safe temperature number for every AMD or Intel model. Judge temperature together with throttling, clock speeds, workload, fan behavior, and repeatable comparisons.

Warning signs of a real mounting or compatibility problem
The base misses the important silicon region
Missing an outside IHS edge is usually less significant than missing the central die or chiplet area. Incorrect orientation, an offset installed in the wrong direction, or an incompatible base can cause this.

- Supports Motherboard Socket: AM4
- Aluminum heatsink - Pre-applied thermal paste
- Direct screw mounting to socket AM4 motherboard
- 3.5-inch 90mm fan
- 4-pin PWM power connector (9-inch length, approximate)
Immediate overheating or throttling
Rapid climbs to the platform’s thermal limit, shutdowns, instability, or throttling at modest sustained loads warrant shutting the system down and checking the mount, fan or pump operation, TIM, and cooler rating.
Loose, tilted, or incorrectly spaced hardware
Wrong socket spacers, backplates, standoffs, washers, or brackets can leave too little pressure. A missing component, uneven screw tension, motherboard interference, or a trapped cable can also prevent flat contact.
Protective film or foreign material
Shipping film must be removed. Intel warns that only TIM belongs between a desktop processor’s IHS and heatsink; stickers, tape, metal shims, random spacers, or other material can reduce heat transfer and damage hardware (Intel warning).

Insufficient cooler capacity
A properly mounted cooler can still be undersized for sustained CPU power. Intel recommends a thermal solution rated for at least the processor’s applicable power requirement (selection guidance; additional thermal-solution guidance). AMD likewise says an aftermarket heatsink should have heat-dissipation capability meeting or exceeding the processor’s power consumption (AMD FAQ).

AMD AM4 and AM5
Many modern AMD processors concentrate heat in chiplets rather than uniformly across the IHS. AM5 mounting may benefit from a cooler or bracket designed to place pressure toward the CCD region. Some coolers support an offset toward the south side of the socket. AM5’s cutouts and lid shape can also make paste appear uneven without indicating failure. Always verify socket, motherboard, memory, case, and PCIe clearance.
Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851
Intel platforms differ in IHS flatness and socket-loading behavior. Base curvature and mounting pressure can affect contact, so a cold plate that looks large enough is not proof of compatibility. Follow the cooler’s exact LGA1700 or LGA1851 hardware instructions and account for any contact frame or other socket accessory.

Use the manufacturer’s tools before buying: Noctua’s compatibility database checks cooler, CPU, motherboard, case, and RAM combinations, while be quiet!’s CPU Cooler Check focuses on mounting and clearance. ARCTIC’s cooler range is listed at its official site.
If temperatures are normal and the current cooler is compatible, buy nothing. A remount with fresh TIM is usually the sensible first purchase after a cooler has been removed. Replace the cooler when mounting hardware is incompatible or damaged, capacity is inadequate, or the unit cannot clear the case and surrounding components.
Quick Recap
Special cases
- Bare-die or delidded CPUs: A cooler designed for a stock IHS is not automatically safe. Specialized mounting and die protection may be required.
- HEDT, workstation, and server processors: Larger packages may require a specifically sized cold plate.
- Laptop CPUs: Custom heatpipe assemblies do not follow desktop tower-cooler assumptions.
- Contact frames and custom IHS modifications: These change loading and contact height; treat them as separate installation variables.
- Liquid coolers: A water block can also be smaller than the visible IHS. Contact pressure, hotspot placement, compatibility, and pump operation still determine performance.
