Usually, no. If Clonezilla is backing up Ubuntu or moving it to a replacement disk in the same computer, restore the image without a Windows-style Sysprep step. If the image will boot on several computers, virtual machines, or cloud instances, prepare it as a generic image by resetting machine identity and deployment-specific configuration.

Clonezilla copies and restores disks or partitions; it does not perform complete Linux operating-system generalization. The right procedure depends on whether you are restoring one machine or creating a reusable template.

The decision in one table

Use case Generalize? Recommended action
Restore to the same computer No Restore normally.
Replace that computer’s disk No Restore normally; repair GRUB only if required.
Move once to different hardware Usually no Check drivers, networking, hostname and, for SSH servers, host keys.
Deploy to multiple physical machines or VMs Yes Reset machine identity and deployment-specific settings before capture or on first boot.
Create a cloud or reusable server image Yes Follow the image builder and cloud-init procedure for that platform.
Keep original and clone connected together Do not boot both casually Disconnect one disk until duplicate identities and boot selection are handled.

What Clonezilla does—and does not do

Clonezilla’s savedisk, saveparts, restoredisk and restoreparts operations copy disk or partition contents. Its documented restore workflow can reinstall GRUB, including the automatic option -g auto, but it does not decide which Ubuntu values should be unique on a new machine. See the ocs-sr documentation and Clonezilla restore procedure.

Clonezilla documents an option concerning removal of Linux udev hardware records, but that is only a hardware-record operation, not a full equivalent of Windows Sysprep. A restored filesystem may boot on different hardware, yet graphics drivers, storage controllers, firmware, DKMS modules, Secure Boot and initramfs can still require attention.

What “generalize” means in Ubuntu

Ubuntu has no single mandatory generalize command. In practice, generalizing means removing or resetting values that identify the source installation or bind it to one deployment. Depending on the image, that can include:

  • /etc/machine-id
  • Hostname and matching /etc/hosts entries
  • Static addresses, interface MAC matches, bridges, bonds, VLANs, routes and Wi-Fi profiles
  • SSH server host keys
  • Cloud-init state and instance data
  • Management, monitoring, backup and inventory-agent IDs
  • VPN keys, certificates, tokens, cached credentials and application node IDs
  • Hard-coded mounts or other hardware-specific settings

The cleanup is selective. Deleting everything can destroy carefully configured storage, encryption or application state that should remain identical.

Same-machine backup or replacement disk

Do not generalize a disaster-recovery image merely because Clonezilla is involved. Keeping the machine ID, hostname, SSH keys and filesystem UUIDs is normally correct when the restored installation remains the same computer.

  1. Back up irreplaceable user data separately.
  2. Boot Clonezilla Live so Ubuntu’s root filesystem is not mounted.
  3. Choose device-image, select the image repository (for example, local_dev), then choose restoredisk and the destination disk.
  4. Keep the original disk disconnected during the first boot if it contains the same installation.
  5. Verify the result:
findmnt /
lsblk -f
hostnamectl
cat /etc/machine-id

If the original disk is removed and the clone replaces it, retaining filesystem UUIDs is usually desirable because /etc/fstab and boot configuration may reference them. Do not regenerate every UUID by default.

One-time move to different hardware

A single migration usually needs inspection rather than image-wide generalization. Before imaging, record the source layout and dependencies:

lsblk -f
cat /etc/fstab
ls -l /etc/netplan/
hostnamectl
dkms status

After restoration, check the target hardware and boot log:

uname -a
lspci -k
lsmod
dkms status
journalctl -b -p warning

Adapt the hostname and network configuration if this is now a different machine. Update packages and regenerate an initramfs only when the hardware change warrants it:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo netplan generate
sudo netplan try
sudo update-initramfs -c -k all

The last command is not automatically necessary on every migration. Proprietary graphics drivers, out-of-tree DKMS modules, RAID or storage-controller drivers, firmware, encryption layouts and Secure Boot signing can all affect the result. A live USB, TTY or recovery mode can be used to reinstall or reconfigure a failing driver.

Resetting identity for a reusable image

Machine ID

/etc/machine-id is a persistent identifier that should be unique per machine. systemd recommends that an operating-system image intended for multiple machines contain a missing or empty file (machine-id documentation).

On a powered-down source or from a live environment, an image builder can empty it:

sudo truncate -s 0 /etc/machine-id

Inspect the related DBus path first:

ls -l /etc/machine-id /var/lib/dbus/machine-id
cat /etc/machine-id

If /var/lib/dbus/machine-id is a symlink to /etc/machine-id, do not remove the symlink merely because it exists. On the first boot of each clone, verify that a new non-empty ID exists. systemd-machine-id-setup can initialize a missing or empty ID; systemd-firstboot can configure an offline mounted image (systemd-machine-id-setup, systemd-firstboot).

Do not empty the ID for an ordinary restore where the installation is still the same machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hostname and hosts file

Every deployed target normally needs its own name:

sudo hostnamectl set-hostname new-hostname
cat /etc/hostname
cat /etc/hosts
hostnamectl

Change any 127.0.1.1 entry that still names the source. Netplan can also provide a hostname to DHCP, so inspect DHCP and hostname behavior in the Netplan documentation.

SSH host keys

An image containing openssh-server must not normally distribute the same server keys to several machines. Files such as /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key identify the SSH server to clients (Ubuntu SSH documentation).

Before capturing a reusable image, remove the host-key set:

sudo rm -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_*

On each target, regenerate keys and restart SSH:

sudo ssh-keygen -A
sudo systemctl restart ssh
sudo ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub

Do not rotate keys on a same-machine replacement if preserving the existing SSH identity is intentional. Clients may otherwise report a changed fingerprint.

Network configuration

Inspect the source:

ls -l /etc/netplan/
grep -R . /etc/netplan/
ip address
ip route

For different hardware, revise static addresses, source MAC matches, interface names, bridges, bonds, VLANs, Wi-Fi, VPNs, routes and DNS settings. A safe validation sequence is:

ip link
ip address
ip route
networkctl status 2>/dev/null || true
nmcli device status 2>/dev/null || true
sudo netplan generate
sudo netplan try

netplan try can roll back an unconfirmed remote change. Do not delete every Netplan file: a server with deliberate static networking needs an adapted configuration.

Cloud-init and deployment agents

Cloud-init initializes cloud instances from metadata and user data, including hostname, users and SSH keys (Ubuntu cloud-init overview). Determine whether it manages the source:

cloud-init status --long
dpkg -l cloud-init
sudo find /var/lib/cloud -maxdepth 2 -type f | head
cloud-init clean --help

A commonly used cleanup is:

sudo cloud-init clean --logs --seed

Confirm the options supported by the installed version and follow the cloud platform’s image procedure. Cloud-init documents SSH-key deletion, regeneration and host-key publication controls (SSH examples, module reference). Also remove enrollment data from monitoring, backup, configuration-management and inventory agents, plus application certificates, tokens and node IDs.

Golden-image procedure

  1. Set a temporary source name and remove deployment-specific settings:
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname golden-image
sudo truncate -s 0 /etc/machine-id
sudo rm -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_*
  1. Inspect static networking, cloud-init state, agent identities, credentials, VPN keys, certificates and application node IDs; remove or reset only what must differ.
  2. Shut down cleanly:
sudo poweroff
  1. Boot Clonezilla Live and capture the disk.
  2. On each target, set its hostname, initialize identity and keys, adapt Netplan, verify mounts, install target drivers and enroll it with required services:
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname target-name
sudo systemd-machine-id-setup
sudo ssh-keygen -A
sudo systemctl restart ssh

Offline cleanup from a live environment

Offline preparation prevents the running source from rewriting values while you capture it. Identify partitions first:

lsblk -f

Then adapt the following outline to the actual root, EFI, encryption, LVM and mount layout:

sudo mount /dev/ROOT_PARTITION /mnt
sudo mount /dev/EFI_PARTITION /mnt/boot/efi # if applicable
sudo truncate -s 0 /mnt/etc/machine-id
sudo rm -f /mnt/etc/ssh/ssh_host_*
sudo umount /mnt/boot/efi 2>/dev/null || true
sudo umount /mnt

Filesystem UUIDs, duplicate disks and boot modes

When a clone replaces the original disk, preserving UUIDs usually keeps /etc/fstab and boot references valid. If both disks stay attached, duplicate filesystem identifiers and machine identity can confuse mounting, boot selection and recovery tools. Disconnect one disk for first boot, or deliberately redeploy the clone with a tested identifier and mount plan; never change UUIDs blindly.

Keep source and target boot modes compatible: normally UEFI to UEFI and legacy BIOS to legacy BIOS. Clonezilla can install GRUB with -g auto, but firmware-specific UEFI entries are not guaranteed to be repaired automatically. If boot fails:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the selected disk and BIOS/UEFI mode.
  2. Check that the EFI System Partition exists and is mounted.
  3. Repair GRUB from an Ubuntu live environment if needed.
  4. Rebuild initramfs when storage or modules changed.
  5. Check /etc/fstab for stale UUIDs or device paths.

Common failure modes

Unwanted hostname

The source hostname may come from /etc/hostname, /etc/hosts, cloud-init or DHCP. Set it with hostnamectl, then inspect those sources.

Duplicate or changed SSH fingerprint

Remove the cloned /etc/ssh/ssh_host_* files, run ssh-keygen -A and restart SSH on the new target. Remove a client’s old known_hosts entry only after verifying the target identity.

No network

Look for changed interface names, MAC-specific Netplan matches, static addresses, NetworkManager/networkd differences and missing firmware:

ip link
ls /etc/netplan
sudo netplan generate
sudo netplan status

Cloud behavior changed

Deleting or retaining cloud-init state incorrectly can prevent expected first-boot initialization. Identify the datasource and use its supported image-cleaning process instead of a generic desktop recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification checklist

  • lsblk -f — disk, partition and filesystem layout
  • findmnt / — mounted root filesystem
  • cat /etc/machine-id — expected identity for this scenario
  • hostnamectl — hostname and system metadata
  • ip address and ip route — network state
  • sudo netplan status — Netplan result
  • dkms status — out-of-tree modules
  • journalctl -b -p warning — warnings from the current boot

Final yes/no checklist

  • Replacing the disk in the same computer? No generalization; restore and verify.
  • Moving once to another computer? Usually no; adapt hardware, hostname, network and SSH identity as appropriate.
  • Deploying to several machines, VMs or clouds? Yes; create a generic image and reset machine-specific state.
  • Original and clone connected? Keep one disconnected until duplicate identities and boot selection are handled.
