Yes—often, but the replacement depends on the potentiometer’s wiring. A two-terminal rheostat normally becomes one fixed resistor. A three-terminal voltage divider normally becomes two fixed resistors, one on each side of the former wiper node. First identify the topology, then measure or calculate the resistance at the required setting.
Identify how the potentiometer is used
A potentiometer is an adjustable voltage divider or a variable resistor. The Bourns Potentiometer Handbook describes both configurations.
Three-terminal voltage divider
Both outer terminals connect to the circuit’s high and low reference nodes, and the wiper supplies an adjustable output:
Vin ── outer A ── resistive track ── outer B ── GND
│
wiper = Vout
Replace it with two resistors:
Vin ── Rtop ── former wiper node ── Rbottom ── GND
Rtop equals the resistance from the upper outer terminal to the wiper. Rbottom equals the resistance from the wiper to the lower outer terminal.

Two-terminal rheostat
If the circuit uses only the wiper and one end terminal, the pot acts as a variable resistor. A single resistor replaces it between those same two circuit nodes. A wiper joined to one end is a common rheostat connection.
Node A ── potentiometer end

Node B ──────┘
Do not assume a three-terminal part needs one resistor; removing the wiper node from a divider changes the circuit topology.
Controls with an integrated switch
Some panel controls combine a potentiometer with an on/off switch. The switch’s extra terminals are separate from the resistive element. Preserve the switch, replace it independently, or use a jumper only when the original design explicitly permits it.
Measure the resistance safely
- Unplug the equipment and disconnect batteries or other power sources.
- Discharge capacitors where applicable, and verify that the circuit is unpowered.
- Photograph or document every wire and terminal before removal.
- Measure between the two outer terminals. This is approximately the pot’s total rated resistance.
- Set the shaft to the desired operating position, then measure from the wiper to each outer terminal.
- Record which measured value belongs to each actual circuit node.
Never use an ohmmeter on a powered circuit. In-circuit readings can be distorted by parallel resistors, semiconductor junctions, capacitors, feedback paths, or other components. For a reliable value, remove the pot or disconnect at least one terminal before measuring.

Rheostat replacement
Use one resistor approximately equal to the resistance measured between the active terminals at the required setting. The potentiometer’s printed total value is not necessarily the replacement value: a 10-kΩ rheostat may be required to operate at 1.8 kΩ, 6 kΩ, or nearly 10 kΩ.

Divider replacement
Use one resistor for each section of the track. Preserve both the ratio and approximately the original end-to-end resistance. For a lightly loaded divider:
VOUT = VIN × Rbottom / (Rtop + Rbottom)
A 10-kΩ pot set to 6.2 kΩ from the upper end to the wiper and 3.8 kΩ from the wiper to the lower end becomes:
Upper node ── 6.2 kΩ ── wiper node ── 3.8 kΩ ── lower node
The pair does not need to total exactly 10 kΩ if the circuit tolerates a small change in divider current, but retaining the total is the safest starting point.

Selecting standard values
- Choose the nearest 1% values when the circuit’s tolerance allows it.
- Use series resistors to obtain a higher value.
- Use parallel resistors to obtain a lower value.
- Use a matched or precision resistor network when ratio accuracy is more important than individual absolute values.
Example: designing a 2 V output from 5 V
The required ratio is Rbottom / (Rtop + Rbottom) = 2/5 = 0.4. A nominal 6-kΩ top resistor and 4-kΩ bottom resistor produce approximately 2 V with no load.
The output will change when a load is connected. If load resistance RL is across the lower resistor, calculate with Reffective = Rbottom ∥ RL, where Ra ∥ Rb = RaRb/(Ra + Rb).

Special circuit applications
Adjustable power-supply feedback
Many regulators use a pot in a feedback divider. A common arrangement is:
VOUT = VREF × (1 + RTOP/RBOTTOM)
Here, RTOP runs from the output to the feedback pin and RBOTTOM runs from that pin to ground. The exact equation, reference voltage, minimum resistance, feedback-pin current, and allowable range must come from the regulator datasheet or module schematic. Never replace a “10-kΩ” adjustment pot with a 10-kΩ resistor solely because of its label; the required value may be the resistance at the selected wiper position. A wrong divider can create an unsafe overvoltage.

Audio volume and tone controls
A fixed resistor can reproduce one attenuation setting, not the adjustment behavior. Logarithmic (audio-taper) pots deliberately have a nonlinear response, so two resistors cannot reproduce the full volume curve. Tone controls can interact with capacitors and amplifier impedances; replacing the pot may therefore change frequency response even when the resistance at one setting is correct.
Bias, gain, timing, and sensors
Pots may set op-amp gain or offset, transistor bias, comparator thresholds, oscillator frequency or duty cycle, LED brightness, display contrast, sensor calibration, motor speed, or supply voltage. Identify what the wiper voltage or resistance controls and verify the operating point across supply tolerance, temperature, load, and component tolerance.

Check power, voltage, and tolerance
Resistor dissipation
For a resistor, calculate:
P = I²RP = V²/R
Choose a power rating comfortably above worst-case dissipation and derate it in hot or enclosed equipment. For a divider:
I = VIN/(RTOP + RBOTTOM)PTOP = I²RTOPPBOTTOM = I²RBOTTOM
A small resistor can have the correct resistance and still fail from excess heat. Potentiometer power ratings also depend on whether the part is used as a divider or rheostat, as explained in the Bourns handbook.
Tolerance and drift
A 1% fixed resistor may be more stable than a mechanical pot, but system accuracy can still be limited by the regulator reference, existing resistors, temperature coefficient, feedback-pin current, leakage, and load. Divider ratio tolerance is often more important than total resistance tolerance.
Loading and resistance range
A much lower total divider resistance increases current and heat. A much higher value makes the node more sensitive to noise, leakage, and input-bias current. Preserve any series resistors that limit the pot’s minimum or maximum setting; replacing only the nominal pot value can defeat those limits.

Installation and test procedure
One-resistor rheostat replacement
- Disconnect power and discharge stored energy.
- Identify the two active terminals and measure their resistance at the desired setting.
- Check the replacement’s resistance, tolerance, voltage rating, and power rating.
- Install it between the same two circuit nodes.
- Inspect for shorts and incorrect wiring.
- Power up through a current-limited supply or other protective test setup when possible.
- Verify the controlled voltage, current, temperature, startup, and fault behavior.
Two-resistor divider replacement
- Identify both outer terminals and the wiper.
- Measure total resistance between the outer terminals.
- Set the control to the desired position.
- Measure wiper-to-upper-end and wiper-to-lower-end resistance.
- Install one resistor from each former outer-terminal node to the former wiper node.
- Recheck the wiper voltage under normal load.
- Test at minimum and maximum expected supply voltage when practical.
When a fixed resistor is the wrong choice
- The user still needs continuous adjustment.
- The circuit requires an audio taper, special taper, multi-gang tracking, or a particular mechanical control.
- The setting is used for production or service calibration.
- The feedback network is undocumented or safety-critical.
- The part carries substantial current or power.
- The circuit is connected to mains, an offline switching supply, CRT/high voltage, a motor controller, a power-amplifier output, or a high-fault-current battery.
Hazardous-voltage work also requires appropriate insulation, creepage, clearance, flame, and safety ratings; qualified service is appropriate when those requirements are uncertain.
Alternatives to a permanent replacement
Fixed resistor plus a trimmer
Use a fixed resistor for most of the value and a smaller trimmer for final calibration. This limits adjustment range, improves repeatability, and reduces the proportion of resistance exposed to pot tolerance and temperature drift. Texas Instruments discusses this approach in its calibration application report.
Multi-position resistor selector
A rotary switch, jumpers, solder bridges, or DIP-switch resistor combinations can provide several known settings without a continuously adjustable shaft.
Digital potentiometer
A digital pot can provide electronic adjustment or automated calibration, but it is rarely a drop-in mechanical replacement. Check supply range, terminal-voltage limits, wiper resistance, end-to-end tolerance, resolution, linearity, current and power limits, startup state, interface, and volatile versus nonvolatile storage. See Analog Devices AN-1121, Microchip AN219, Analog Devices AN-1291, and Renesas’ digitally controlled potentiometer guide.

Replacement mechanical potentiometer
If adjustment must remain, match total resistance, taper, power and voltage ratings, shaft and mounting dimensions, gangs, switch configuration, rotation angle, terminal layout, and environmental rating. Manufacturer families such as Bourns Trimpot trimmers are suitable for calibration applications, while fixed resistor families are available from Vishay and Bourns.
