The Cellink BTA-6030 was a Bluetooth 2.0+EDR Class 1 USB adapter advertised for $13 with free ground shipping in an AnandTech Hot Deals post on February 9, 2007. That price was a historical offer, not a current deal. The discontinued dongle is mainly of interest today for vintage computers and other projects that specifically need period Bluetooth hardware.

What the original deal offered

The AnandTech forum post advertised Cellink’s BTA-6030 Bluetooth Enhanced Adapter at The Tech Geeks for $13, with free ground shipping. The post also claimed a range of up to 330 feet. That was an advertised maximum, not a guarantee of usable range in a home or office. Read the archived February 9, 2007 deal post.

The offer appeared when Bluetooth 2.0+EDR hardware was an early-generation upgrade. The model had already appeared in Newegg’s listings by September 27, 2005, according to its product page. The old listing is useful for identifying the product, but it does not make the 2007 deal price a present-day value. Newegg’s BTA-6030 listing is out of stock, and Danawa’s listing identifies it as discontinued with no active price listings. Used-market availability can vary; no reliable current new-retail price is established.

BTA-6030 specifications

Contemporary testing described the adapter as a CSR-based Bluetooth 2.0+EDR device using Toshiba Bluetooth stack 3.03.10. The same test reported its physical dimensions and radio measurements. Heise’s contemporary technical test provides the technical details below.

What Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and Class 1 meant

EDR improved the link rate, not every device’s speed

Bluetooth 2.0 introduced Enhanced Data Rate (EDR), which raised theoretical link throughput over earlier Basic Rate operation. Heise gives a nominal maximum of roughly 723.2 kbit/s for ordinary Basic Rate adapters as context for the improvement. Real transfers depend on both devices, the Bluetooth profile and protocol overhead, signal conditions, and host software. Pairing an older phone, headset, keyboard, or controller with an EDR adapter does not make that older device operate at EDR rates.

Bluetooth 2.0+EDR is also not equivalent to Bluetooth 4.x or 5.x, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or modern audio and security capabilities. USB 2.0 does not change that: it is simply the adapter’s connection to the computer.

Class 1 did not promise a 330-foot connection

Class 1 indicates a higher-power radio category intended for longer-range links; nominal expectations around 100 meters assume suitable conditions. The BTA-6030’s reported transmit power was up to 16 dBm, and its tested receiver sensitivity was approximately –90 dBm. Those measurements suggest capable radio hardware for its era, but neither they nor the Class 1 label guarantee a particular working distance.

Bluetooth is a two-way link. A lower-power phone, headset, or controller can limit the connection even when paired with a Class 1 adapter. Walls, interference, antenna orientation, placement behind a metal computer case, and receiver sensitivity also affect range. The deal post’s “up to 330 feet” should therefore be read as an idealized advertised maximum, not a dependable indoor operating distance.

Driver and profile compatibility are the main practical questions

With a legacy Bluetooth adapter, “compatible” can mean several different things: the computer detects the USB controller, the devices pair, authentication succeeds, and the required Bluetooth profile works in an application. Those are separate stages. A dongle can appear in the operating system yet fail to provide usable file transfer, HID input, serial-port, dial-up networking, or headset audio support.

The BTA-6030’s Toshiba stack is especially relevant. A participant in the original AnandTech thread cautioned that the adapter used Toshiba rather than Widcomm software, and that the stack could matter for the device being connected. Community references also report use with BlueSoleil in some legacy gaming setups, including a Wii-related compatibility list; that is historical community evidence, not current manufacturer support. See the WiiBrew compatibility list.

Do not assume that a generic CSR driver will provide the right profiles, or that a period driver installer will run on a modern 64-bit operating system. Old software may be difficult to obtain, unsigned, incompatible, or in conflict with another Bluetooth stack. The period Windows compatibility list ends at Windows XP; it does not establish official support for Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 11, current macOS, or current Linux distributions.

Reports from Mac users illustrate why successful pairing is not the same as full service support. In a discussion about an iBook G3, users described plug-and-play operation in some cases but also reported incomplete functionality, including iSync not working. These are anecdotes about older Apple hardware and software, not evidence of compatibility with current Macs. Read the historical iBook discussion.

Is the BTA-6030 useful today?

It may suit a specific legacy project

The adapter may be worth considering for a period-correct Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, or XP system, or for a retro-computing, gaming, laboratory, or embedded project that requires this generation of Bluetooth. The best prospects are setups where the operating system, driver stack, and target device are already known to work together, and where period authenticity matters more than convenience.

It is a poor fit for most modern peripherals and computers

  • Windows 10 or 11: Modern support is not established, and driver installation or profile support may be a problem.
  • BLE peripherals: Bluetooth 2.0+EDR is not Bluetooth Low Energy.
  • Current Bluetooth audio: Do not expect modern audio features or codecs from this legacy hardware and software stack.
  • Current macOS: Old Mac anecdotes do not establish that a USB adapter will work as an upgrade on a current Mac.
  • Linux: Compatibility depends on the exact controller, kernel, distribution, and BlueZ support; verify the specific setup rather than assuming a generic CSR device will work.
  • Long-range links: The Class 1 rating alone cannot ensure the remote device has sufficient transmit power or that the environment supports the desired distance.

How to evaluate a used unit

  1. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision. Check the label and compare it with the BTA-6030 listing; do not assume every similar-looking CSR dongle has the same firmware or driver behavior.
  2. Identify the target computer and operating system. The documented period Windows list covers 98 SE, ME, 2000, and XP, not modern Windows editions.
  3. Find out which software stack is available. Ask whether the original driver media is included and whether the intended Toshiba, Widcomm, BlueSoleil, or operating-system stack has been verified with this unit.
  4. Name the required profile and device. Pairing a phone or keyboard is not proof that headset audio, file transfer, synchronization, or a specialized controller will work.
  5. Ask the seller to demonstrate the intended function. Confirm USB detection, pairing, and the specific profile or application you need; check the return terms if the seller cannot test it.

What to choose instead

For a current Windows desktop, look for a Bluetooth 5.x USB adapter that explicitly lists support for your Windows version. For BLE devices, confirm BLE support rather than relying on a Bluetooth version number alone. On Linux, prioritize a controller supported by the distribution’s current kernel and BlueZ stack. On macOS, do not assume a USB dongle is a straightforward Bluetooth upgrade; compatibility depends on Apple hardware and operating-system behavior. For retro systems, the BTA-6030 may be the more appropriate historical component if you can verify the driver and device combination.
