To make a Session Border Controller (SBC) work through a DSL wireless gateway, first confirm that the ISP provides a reachable public address. Then use bridge or IP-passthrough mode if available; otherwise give the SBC a fixed LAN address, disable SIP ALG, and forward only the provider-required SIP signaling and SBC-configured RTP ports. Set the SBC’s NAT and media settings to match the topology, and test calls and audio separately. Exact settings depend on the gateway, ISP, SBC, and SIP provider. “Wireless gateway” may mean a DSL modem/router with Wi-Fi or a cellular gateway; the latter is more likely to use carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT).

Choose a topology before changing settings

An SBC is a network-border device that controls session signaling and media. It may sit behind a firewall or between two networks; its interface roles and capabilities vary by product. See Sangoma’s network configuration guidance and Ribbon’s overview of SBC functions.

Preferred: bridge or IP passthrough

DSL line → gateway in bridge/IP-passthrough mode → SBC or firewall → LAN

This usually avoids double NAT. Bridge mode leaves routing and security to the downstream device; use it only if that device can handle the ISP’s WAN authentication and protect the connection. IP passthrough assigns or passes the public address to a designated device while the gateway may retain some functions. Its behavior varies by gateway and ISP.

Workable fallback: SBC behind the gateway

Internet/DSL → wireless gateway/NAT → SBC → PBX and phones

This can work if the gateway has a usable public IPv4 address, permits inbound traffic, and supports the required forwarding. Reserve a fixed address for the SBC and forward only the required signaling and media traffic. The SBC may use a local address on its gateway-facing interface; consult its vendor guidance for the intended interface layout.

Use DMZ only as a deliberate fallback

A DMZ-host setting may send unsolicited inbound traffic to the SBC’s private address, but it is not inherently safe and does not fix CGNAT or incorrect SIP/SDP settings. Do not expose SBC administration on the WAN. Prefer specific provider-restricted rules when possible.

Check whether inbound connectivity is possible

Before configuring a trunk, compare the gateway’s WAN address with the public address seen by the SBC or an external address-checking service. Identify whether the gateway has public IPv4, private IPv4, an address in 100.64.0.0/10 shared space, or IPv6-only/DS-Lite service. A private or shared WAN address can indicate another NAT layer upstream.

  • Public IPv4: Direct inbound SIP may be possible if the ISP and gateway permit it.
  • Private IPv4 or CGNAT: A port-forward on the customer gateway cannot open a path through the ISP’s upstream NAT. Ask the ISP about public/static IPv4 or use a provider-supported VPN, private interconnect, or hosted SBC.
  • IPv6-only or DS-Lite: Confirm that the SBC and SIP provider support the actual IPv6/NAT traversal design. Do not assume an IPv4 forwarding recipe applies; Ribbon’s cited NAT-traversal documentation describes an IPv6 limitation for its specified SBC Core behavior, not all SBCs.
  • Dynamic public IPv4: Address changes can invalidate provider allowlists, static NAT settings, and peer definitions. Use a provider-supported dynamic-address method, registration-based trunking, or a stable service arrangement.

If the ISP uses CGNAT, blocks inbound traffic, or offers no workable passthrough or forwarding, stop treating this as a port-setting problem. Ask about static/public IPv4 or a supported private connection; a more capable SBC alone cannot remove upstream NAT.

Prepare the gateway and network

  1. Choose the layout. If the SBC separates the VoIP network from the gateway LAN, connect its WAN/primary interface to the gateway and its LAN interface to the PBX or VoIP switch. Avoid placing both SBC interfaces on the same flat network unless the vendor documents that arrangement.
  2. Reserve the SBC address. Create a DHCP reservation or configure a fixed address appropriate to the gateway subnet. Record the gateway address, SBC interfaces, LAN subnet, default route, DNS, and public address.
  3. Set bridge or passthrough if appropriate. Use the gateway’s manual or ISP support for the exact menu and consequences. There is no universal click path, and bridge mode may disable gateway Wi-Fi, DHCP, firewalling, or ISP voice services.
  4. Disable SIP ALG. When the SBC handles SIP/NAT traversal, gateway SIP ALG is normally best disabled because it may rewrite SIP headers or SDP in conflict with the SBC. Lumen’s VoIP router guidance warns that NAT can cause VoIP problems and notes SIP ALG considerations. If the gateway offers no control, test passthrough/bridge or ask the ISP; capture traffic to see whether fields such as Via, Contact, SDP c=, or media ports are being changed.
  5. Apply narrow firewall rules. Use the SIP provider’s published signaling and media addresses where available. Do not expose broad SIP or RTP ranges to the entire internet without a specific reason.

Configure signaling and media separately

SIP signaling

Common examples include UDP or TCP port 5060 for SIP and TCP 5061 for SIP over TLS, but neither is universal. For example, Avaya documents those port uses for a particular Web Gateway/SBC connection procedure; follow the transport and ports specified by your provider and SBC. See Avaya’s connection settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbound registration often works through NAT because the SBC initiates the connection. Inbound calls still require the provider to reach the right public address and port, a valid NAT mapping, or a supported traversal design. TLS additionally depends on the correct hostname, certificate, transport, and provider trust requirements. Restrict inbound signaling to known provider SBC addresses where practical.

RTP media

Voice media generally uses a separate UDP port range. Read the configured range from the SBC, PBX, and provider rather than copying a generic list. For perspective, Lumen gives UDP 16384–32767 as an example in its hosted-VoIP guidance, while a Dinstar SBC8000 manual identifies a default RTP start port of 32768 and discusses mapping a larger range. These are product/service-specific examples, not a universal SBC standard. See the Dinstar SBC8000 manual and Ribbon’s NAT traversal documentation.

  1. Identify the SBC’s configured RTP start and end ports, the provider’s media peers/range, and whether the SBC anchors media or endpoints send it directly.
  2. If the SBC is behind NAT, forward the exact required UDP range to its fixed address and permit it through the firewall.
  3. Configure the SBC to advertise the reachable public/media address as required by its NAT mode. Enable media relay/anchoring when direct media cannot traverse the topology.
  4. Verify both directions of RTP in packet captures or SBC diagnostics; successful SIP registration alone does not establish that audio can pass.

SBC NAT and keepalive settings

Depending on the product, settings may be named external/public IP, signaling NAT, media NAT, symmetric RTP, rport, Contact/Via rewriting, keepalive, registration refresh, media anchoring, or ICE/STUN/TURN. Ribbon documents separate signaling and media traversal controls and UDP keepalive behavior; exact names and support depend on product and version. See Ribbon’s zone CLI documentation.

Do not enter a static external address if the ISP changes it unless the SBC/provider design accounts for that change. Likewise, avoid enabling multiple competing SIP/SDP rewrite mechanisms without testing. The PBX and SBC should not independently rewrite the same fields unless their documented design requires it.

Validate in layers, then test real call behavior

Test Expected result If it fails
Gateway and WAN Gateway has internet; its WAN address and mode are understood. Check ISP service, bridge/passthrough setup, and upstream NAT status.
SBC routing and DNS SBC reaches its gateway, resolves names, and reaches provider endpoints. Check interface addressing, default route, DNS, and duplicate routes.
SIP registration/trunk Provider returns the expected success response. Check credentials, transport, DNS, source address, allowlists, and SBC logs.
Inbound call Provider INVITE reaches the SBC and call routes correctly. Check public address, provider routing, forwarding, and Contact/Via/NAT behavior.
Two-way audio RTP flows in both directions after answer. Check SDP addresses, RTP range, provider media ACLs, and media anchoring.
Hold, resume, and transfers Re-INVITE/UPDATE and media changes complete correctly. Check SBC policy, direct media, NAT rewriting, and firewall behavior.
Long call and idle recovery Call survives beyond gateway UDP timeouts and after idle periods. Check NAT binding expiry, SIP/session timers, registration refresh, and keepalive.

Test one outbound call, one inbound call, two-way audio, hold/resume, blind and attended transfer, a call longer than the gateway’s typical UDP timeout, and simultaneous calls. Then reboot the gateway, renew the WAN address, and retest after an overnight idle period. If the gateway supports both IPv4 and IPv6, test the intended production mode rather than assuming one proves the other.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No registration

  • Confirm the SBC resolves and reaches the provider’s SIP address.
  • Check credentials, transport, port, certificate/hostname requirements for TLS, provider source-IP allowlists, and SBC response-code logs.
  • Verify SIP ALG is disabled and confirm the outbound mapping and replies in a packet capture.

Registration works, but inbound calls fail

  • Confirm the provider sends calls to the address and port the SBC actually uses.
  • Check whether the registration mapping expires or the provider requires a static address/IP authentication.
  • Inspect Contact/Via rewriting and inbound forwarding; registration does not guarantee an inbound route.

Outbound calls connect but audio is missing or one-way

  • Check whether the full configured RTP range is allowed and forwarded.
  • Inspect SDP for private or otherwise unreachable media addresses and verify that the provider’s media sources are permitted.
  • Check whether direct media is enabled where endpoints cannot reach each other; test SBC media anchoring and symmetric RTP as supported.

Calls drop after a fixed interval

Investigate a gateway UDP timeout closing a NAT mapping, missing keepalives or registration refresh, and SIP session timer negotiation. Compare SBC logs and captures on both sides of the gateway to see which flow stops first.

TLS fails

Verify that the provider expects TLS on the configured port, that the SBC presents the correct certificate and hostname, and that the provider’s trust and cipher requirements are met. A port-forward alone cannot correct a certificate or transport mismatch.

Works until the gateway reboots or only works with DMZ

After reboot, check whether the SBC’s address reservation, public address, forwarding rules, and provider allowlist remain consistent. If DMZ changes the result, use captures to identify which required flow the narrower rules missed, then replace the broad exposure with specific rules where possible.

Secure the deployment and know when to change it

  • Keep gateway and SBC administration limited to LAN or VPN access.
  • Change default credentials, keep firmware current, and monitor failed registrations and scanning.
  • Restrict inbound SIP and RTP to provider addresses where the service supports stable peer ranges; use TLS/SRTP where supported and required.
  • Use a dedicated firewall when it provides clearer ACLs, VLAN separation, logging, and reliable ALG control.

Consider a different connectivity design if the ISP uses CGNAT, the gateway cannot disable a disruptive ALG or provide forwarding/passthrough, inbound traffic is filtered, RTP is blocked, or the provider requires a stable source address you cannot maintain. Options include a business/public static IPv4 service, a provider-managed or hosted SBC, or a VPN/private SIP interconnect where the carrier supports it. These approaches trade recurring cost, provider dependence, licensing, and reduced local control for a more predictable path; buying a larger SBC does not by itself solve an upstream reachability problem.
