Black-and-white stripes usually indicate a video-signal or hardware problem, not an ordinary Windows setting. The fastest test is to open the monitor’s own menu and then disconnect the video cable. If the stripes cover the on-screen display or remain when the cable is unplugged, the monitor, panel electronics, or monitor-side connection is strongly implicated. If the image is clean until Windows loads, investigate the graphics driver, display mode, application, or GPU instead.
What the symptom can look like
This problem may appear as thin vertical or horizontal lines, repeating barcode-like bands, large black-and-white blocks, or lines that flicker, move, or change when the mouse moves. It may affect the entire screen or occur only in a game, video, browser, or one input. A completely blank display, a backlight failure, distorted colors, and fixed stripes are different faults and require different tests.
Quick diagnosis
| Observation | More likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Stripes cover the monitor’s own menu | Panel or monitor electronics | Run the model’s self-test and use warranty support |
| Stripes remain with the video cable unplugged | Monitor hardware | Use built-in diagnostics; do not open the monitor |
| Stripes appear at the manufacturer logo or BIOS | Cable, GPU, monitor, or laptop display hardware | Swap the cable, display, and output one at a time |
| Stripes begin only after Windows loads | Driver, application, display mode, or GPU | Reset the driver, test Safe Mode, and check settings |
| Pattern changes when the cable moves | Cable or connector | Stop flexing it and replace the cable |
| Same corruption appears on several displays | GPU, motherboard, source cable, or driver | Test another output and Safe Mode |
| External monitor is clean but a laptop panel is striped | Laptop panel or internal display cable | Limit lid movement and arrange repair |
| Only one monitor in a multi-monitor setup is affected | That monitor, its cable, input, or port | Swap cables and GPU ports |
These are isolation clues rather than guarantees; a cable, port, GPU, and monitor can produce similar patterns.
Five-minute isolation checklist
- Photograph the screen. A photo records whether the pattern is fixed or intermittent.
- Power-cycle. Shut down the computer, turn off the monitor, unplug monitor power for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and restart. This can clear a temporary state but cannot repair a damaged panel.
- Open the monitor menu. Press its Menu or joystick control. If the menu is also striped, Windows is unlikely to be the sole cause.
- Disconnect the video cable. Leave the monitor powered and look for its “No Signal” message. Persistent stripes with no source point to the monitor. If the model provides “built-in diagnostics,” “BIST,” or “self-test feature check,” follow its manual; procedures differ by model. Dell describes a solid-color self-test for separating monitor and computer faults: Dell monitor self-test guidance.
- Reseat the signal path. Disconnect and reconnect both ends, inspect for damage or bent pins, try another monitor input and graphics-card output, and temporarily remove docks, KVMs, adapters, and extensions. On a desktop with a dedicated graphics card, connect the cable to that card rather than the motherboard output unless your configuration requires integrated graphics. Dell and Lenovo recommend checking connections, input selection, and the correct graphics output (Dell; Lenovo).
- Try a known-good cable. Use the same connector type and enough bandwidth for the required resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and adaptive-sync mode. If the image becomes normal, replace the old cable.
- Choose the correct input. Manually select HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or VGA on the monitor. This mainly addresses “No Signal,” but rules out a misleading input state.
Check when the stripes begin
Watch the manufacturer logo, BIOS/UEFI screen, Windows sign-in screen, and desktop separately. Lines visible before Windows starts are outside normal Windows software and may come from a damaged panel, laptop cable, monitor control board, signal cable, GPU or video memory, physical impact, liquid, or overheating. HP identifies jagged lines and large black or white areas visible at BIOS level as possible physical screen damage; a cracked LCD generally needs replacement rather than a software adjustment (HP screen troubleshooting).

Windows 10 and 11 tests
Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The display may flicker or the computer may beep while Windows reloads the graphics driver. Microsoft lists this as an initial step for blank or flickering displays (Microsoft blank-screen troubleshooting).
Compare Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl + Alt + Deleteand open Task Manager, or pressCtrl + Shift + Esc. - Compare Task Manager with the rest of the screen.
If Task Manager is corrupted too, a display-driver or broader graphics problem is more likely. If Task Manager is clean while the rest is striped, an incompatible application is more likely. Microsoft recommends this comparison for separating driver and application faults (Microsoft screen-flicker guidance).
Test Safe Mode
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press
4for Safe Mode or5for Safe Mode with Networking.
If stripes disappear in Safe Mode, investigate the display driver, a recent update, GPU utility, or incompatible application. Safe Mode makes software more likely but does not completely exclude hardware. If stripes remain there and were visible before Windows, hardware is more likely. Recovery labels can vary by device; Microsoft and Dell describe Safe Mode as a reduced-driver isolation test (Microsoft; Dell).
Update or roll back the display driver
- Search for Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Properties > Driver.
- If the fault began after an update, try Roll Back Driver.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver. If necessary, uninstall the device and restart so Windows can reinstall it.
For the most suitable driver, check the computer or graphics-adapter manufacturer as well as Windows Update. Microsoft’s driver guidance is at this support page.

Resolution, refresh rate, and applications
After checking the physical path, temporarily use the monitor’s native resolution, 60 Hz, HDR off, and disable adaptive sync, overclocking, and custom modes. If the stripes disappear at 60 Hz or a lower resolution, the clue points to cable bandwidth, port compatibility, driver timing, or a marginal monitor input—not necessarily a dead panel. HP recommends matching native resolution and refresh rate and trying a shorter cable where signal strength may be involved (HP display-quality guidance). Treat this as a diagnostic workaround, not a repair.
If corruption occurs only in one game, video, or browser, test another application and temporarily disable that application’s hardware acceleration. Do not install random registry edits or third-party driver-cleaning utilities before completing the standard Microsoft driver and Safe Mode path.
Use another display to isolate the failed component
Same computer, different monitor or TV
A clean second display makes the original monitor, cable, or input more likely. The same stripes on both displays make the computer, GPU, driver, or source cable more likely.
Same monitor, different computer or console
If stripes follow the monitor, suspect its panel, electronics, cable, or input. If it works normally with another source, investigate the original computer. HP recommends testing in both directions (HP external-display testing).

Screenshot test
Take a screenshot and view it on another device. Stripes in the file can indicate GPU, driver, or application corruption; a clean screenshot with a physically striped panel points downstream toward the cable, input, or monitor. This is useful but not conclusive for every hardware-acceleration or framebuffer fault.
Laptop, dock, and multi-monitor cases
Laptop panel
If an external monitor is clean, move the laptop lid slowly once. A pattern that changes with lid angle suggests the internal display cable or hinge area. Avoid repeated movement and do not press the panel. If both displays are corrupted, suspect the GPU, driver, or motherboard.
USB-C dock or adapter
Connect the monitor directly to the computer. If direct connection works, troubleshoot the dock or adapter’s display protocol, bandwidth, power delivery, firmware, and cable rather than replacing the monitor.
Multiple monitors
Swap cables between screens, swap GPU ports, lower one display’s refresh rate, and temporarily disconnect the others. A defect that follows the cable implicates the cable; one that follows the monitor implicates the monitor; one that remains on a particular GPU port implicates that port or the GPU.

When to stop troubleshooting
- Stripes appear in the OSD or built-in self-test.
- The monitor was dropped, squeezed, bent, cracked, or exposed to liquid.
- There is an ink-like blotch, spreading black area, or jagged band.
- Lines persist before Windows, with another cable and input.
- A laptop panel is affected while an external monitor works.
- The monitor is under warranty.
Do not press the bezel or twist the panel to make lines change. Do not open a mains-powered monitor unless qualified, and unplug equipment before inspecting external connectors. Physical LCD damage generally has no software correction and may require panel replacement (HP). Back up important files while the computer is usable before repeated restarts, driver changes, firmware work, or resets.

Use the manufacturer warranty first when the monitor fails its own menu or diagnostic. An out-of-warranty panel repair can approach the cost of a replacement, but labor and parts vary by model and region. If buying a cable, match connector type, length, and the required resolution and refresh bandwidth; a “premium” label is not itself evidence of better performance. Consider a replacement monitor only after the monitor-side and second-display tests implicate it. Current official support and product pages include Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
The shortest decision path
- Open the monitor menu and unplug the video cable.
- If stripes remain, run the model’s self-test and pursue warranty or repair.
- If the monitor is clean, test a known-good cable, another input, and another display.
- If stripes begin only in Windows, reset the driver, compare Task Manager, use Safe Mode, and roll back or update the driver.
- Use native resolution and 60 Hz as a temporary diagnostic setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bad HDMI or DisplayPort cable cause black-and-white lines?
Yes. A damaged or insufficiently rated cable can produce stripes, especially at high resolution, high refresh, HDR, or adaptive-sync settings. A known-good cable that resolves the problem is strong evidence, although the original port or signal mode could also be involved.
Are stripes proof that the GPU is dead?
No. The same symptom can come from a cable, monitor input, panel, laptop display cable, driver, or application. Reproduce the problem on another display before treating the GPU as defective.

Why do the lines disappear at 60 Hz?
Lower refresh reduces signal demand. That can expose a marginal cable, port, driver configuration, or monitor timing problem, but it does not repair failing hardware.
Can pressing the screen fix it?
Do not press, twist, or flex the panel or bezel. Such actions can worsen damage, create an electrical hazard, and affect warranty coverage.
Should I reinstall Windows?
No. Reinstalling Windows is a last resort after checking the monitor menu, cable, display mode, Safe Mode, and graphics driver.
