OWC’s U2 Shuttle is a removable 3.5-inch U.2 carrier that holds up to four M.2 NVMe SSDs. It is not a single, native U.2 SSD: a PCIe switch connects the four drives to one shared PCIe 3.0 x4 host link. That makes it most relevant to users with compatible NVMe U.2 equipment who want a dense, swappable multi-drive module—not anyone expecting it to work in an ordinary SATA drive bay.

What OWC introduced at CES 2021

OWC announced the U2 Shuttle on January 11, 2021, describing it as a 3.5-inch U.2 carrier for up to four M.2 NVMe SSDs. The module uses a U.2/SFF-8639 connection to fit compatible storage bays and hosts. OWC’s announcement called it the “world’s first” product of its kind; that is the company’s marketing claim, not an independently established industry distinction. OWC’s announcement and AnandTech’s CES 2021 coverage describe the launch.

The idea was to combine several M.2 drives in a removable 3.5-inch module. For media crews and other production teams, that can make it easier to move storage between compatible workstations or enclosures than to transport a complete storage system. The Shuttle itself is not a USB portable drive; it needs an NVMe-capable U.2 connection in a host or enclosure.

How the four drives connect to the host

An ASMedia ASM2812X PCIe switch connects the internal SSDs to the host. The carrier provides four PCIe 3.0 lanes upstream through U.2, then allocates two PCIe 3.0 lanes to each of its four M.2 positions. In simplified form:

That lane allocation is the key performance constraint. A single SSD cannot use a full x4 connection in this carrier; it gets x2. Multiple drives can deliver aggregate throughput, but they share the host-side x4 link. OWC lists theoretical bandwidth of up to 3,940MB/s, dependent on the drives and host, and up to 2,750MB/s in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. Those are OWC specifications, not guaranteed results or independent benchmark measurements. OWC’s support manual documents the switch and lane arrangement; its product specifications give the bandwidth figures.

Actual speed depends on the SSDs, host controller, connection, enclosure, thermal conditions, workload, filesystem, and RAID implementation. Sequential transfers across several drives may benefit from aggregation, while small or random operations and parity workloads behave differently. A Thunderbolt 3 enclosure can become the limiting link, and newer PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 SSDs cannot run at their native interface speed through this PCIe 3.0 design.

RAID is a host or software choice, not a built-in controller

OWC describes the U2 Shuttle as RAID-ready and lists RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 10, and JBOD. The carrier’s PCIe switch connects drives; it is not described as a hardware RAID controller. Creating an array requires suitable host/controller support or software. Choose a layout according to whether performance, usable capacity, redundancy, or independent volumes matter most:

Mode What it does Main trade-off
RAID 0 Combines drives for capacity and potentially higher aggregate throughput. No redundancy: failure of one SSD can destroy the array.
RAID 1 Mirrors data for redundancy. Usable capacity is reduced compared with the raw total.
RAID 5 Uses distributed parity to balance capacity and fault tolerance. Writes incur parity overhead; rebuilds require planning.
RAID 10 Combines mirroring and striping for performance and redundancy. Uses roughly half the raw capacity.
JBOD or independent volumes Keeps drives available as separate volumes or concatenated storage, depending on implementation. Does not inherently provide redundancy or the performance gains of striping.

RAID is not a backup. Redundancy can help maintain access after some drive failures, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, corruption, theft, or damage to the whole module. Also confirm whether the host can read the array if the original carrier, controller, or software environment fails. OWC says independent volumes can be bootable in macOS; that should not be taken as a guarantee that every software RAID arrangement is bootable.

Check compatibility before buying or installing

A 3.5-inch shape and a U.2 connector do not guarantee compatibility. The host must provide PCIe/NVMe U.2 connectivity; a physically similar connection wired for SATA or SAS is not enough. OWC lists the ThunderBay Flex 8 (top four bays only, with the top-left position recommended), Flex 1U4, Mercury Helios 3S with the U.2 NVMe Interchange System, and Gemini among compatible products. Other PCs and servers may work if their U.2 port or backplane supports NVMe. Check OWC’s compatibility information for the specific enclosure.

  • [Widely Transmission Protocol]: ORARA U.2 NVMe SSD external case support USB4.0 and is fully compatible with Thunderbolt4/Thunderbolt3/USB3.2/3.1/3.0/Type-C ports. (NOTE: NOT compatible with USB2.0 and below).
  • [Fast transmission protocol]: Transfer speed up to 3000 MB/s For USB4/TB3/TB4.(Actual speed varies by hard disk capacities, host device, user applications and other factors). Transfer speed up to 900 MB/s for USB mode. When working on the Windows OS, if speed is lower than you expected, please remember disk write caching needs to be enabled to maximize the SSD write performance.
  • [Aluminium alloy body and silent fan]: Full Product body built with aluminium alloy material and built in silent cooling fan keeps temperatures under control during high-speed transfers, ensuring stable performance and extending the life of your SSD.
  • [Very Important NOTE]: To achieve speeds exceeding 3000MB/s, please make sure your laptop has TB4/TB3/USB4 port, and use 40Gbps USB4 cable. For USB port transfer speed, it depends on which speed of the USB port of your computer you are using(USB2.0 and below can NOT be used).
  • Host: Verify that the U.2 port, cable, or backplane is PCIe/NVMe, not just a matching connector or SATA/SAS bay.
  • Internal drives: Use M.2 2280, M-key, NVMe/PCIe SSDs. M.2 drives with their own heatsinks will not fit.
  • Capacity: Check OWC’s current stated limit of 4TB per internal drive against the SSDs and configuration you intend to use.
  • Enclosure and airflow: Confirm physical clearance, connection support, and ventilation. Sustained transfers can be affected by thermals in a cramped or poorly ventilated bay.
  • Power and handling: OWC lists the carrier as bus-powered, with no separate adapter. It uses thermal pads; open it carefully because pads may adhere to drives over time.
  • Software and boot: Confirm the operating system or controller supports your intended RAID mode, recovery process, and boot requirements.

OWC’s user guide specifies the drive type, while its support manual covers installation and heatsink clearance.

Capacity, price, and what changed after launch

Keep the 2021 launch claims separate from the lineup displayed on OWC’s product page. OWC announced an empty carrier at $149.99 for January 2021 and said preconfigured systems would reach 32TB. AnandTech later reported a 32TB demonstration using four 8TB M.2 drives in 2023. OWC’s currently indexed product page instead shows an empty carrier at $129.99, populated configurations of 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB, and a maximum of 4TB per internal drive. These are different points in the product’s history; the launch and demonstration figures do not establish that a 32TB retail configuration is currently orderable.

OWC product page currently indexed $129.99 for the empty carrier; populated options shown at $1,749.99 for 4TB, $2,949.99 for 8TB, and $4,579.99 for 16TB. The page states up to 4TB per drive. Prices and availability can change. OWC product page

The empty carrier is not a complete storage device: a DIY build also needs compatible SSDs and a suitable NVMe U.2 host or enclosure. A populated configuration may be simpler to purchase, but its price should be compared with the cost of the carrier and four suitable drives. The Shuttle carries a one-year OWC limited warranty according to the product page.

Who the U2 Shuttle suits—and who should look elsewhere

It may suit

  • Media professionals who already have compatible U.2 enclosures and need removable storage for production-to-post workflows.
  • Workstation or server users who want multiple M.2 drives in one 3.5-inch module and can manage the required software or controller setup.
  • People who value drive density and swappability more than a single-drive, plug-and-play experience.

It is a poor fit

  • Anyone with only a standard SATA 3.5-inch bay and no NVMe U.2 connection.
  • Buyers who expect one internal SSD to use PCIe 3.0 x4, or expect PCIe 4.0/5.0 M.2 speeds.
  • Users who want a simple external USB SSD or a low-complexity boot drive.
  • Anyone who needs enterprise performance or endurance guarantees not established by the carrier’s specifications.

Alternatives for different needs

Option Better fit when… What you give up
Native U.2 or U.3 SSD You want one independently addressable drive, simpler recovery, or an enterprise drive with its own firmware and endurance specifications. It does not offer the Shuttle’s four-M.2 modularity.
OWC U2 ShuttleOne You need one M.2 SSD in a 2.5-inch U.2 form factor. OWC lists a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface for this single-drive alternative. No four-drive aggregation or multi-drive RAID design. OWC U2 ShuttleOne
M.2 PCIe expansion card You have a desktop workstation with an available PCIe slot and do not need to swap a 3.5-inch module between U.2 systems. It may require motherboard bifurcation or a PCIe switch, and it does not provide the same bay-based removability.
Thunderbolt external NVMe SSD You want simpler portability and broad host convenience without configuring a multi-drive array. It may offer less expandability or sustained throughput than a properly configured internal PCIe array.

For a single M.2 drive in a U.2 bay, ShuttleOne is the closer in-family choice. For four-drive density and removable media workflows, the original U2 Shuttle is more distinctive—but only if the host wiring and RAID plan are already settled.
