There is no single graphics-driver package for Linux Mint. For NVIDIA graphics, use the proprietary package that Driver Manager marks recommended. AMD Radeon and Intel graphics normally use drivers and graphics components supplied through the Linux kernel and Mesa, so you usually do not need to download a separate vendor installer. These steps focus on Ubuntu-based Linux Mint; LMDE is Debian-based and has different package and repository details.
Identify your graphics card and Mint edition
Open Terminal and run:
inxi -Gxx
If inxi is unavailable, identify the graphics devices and active kernel drivers with:
lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'
Look for the GPU manufacturer and model, and a line such as Kernel driver in use. Common driver names include nvidia or nouveau for NVIDIA, amdgpu for most newer AMD cards, and i915 or xe for Intel, depending on hardware and kernel. These commands show what the system detects and which kernel driver is loaded; they do not by themselves prove that every graphics feature works.
To distinguish Ubuntu-based Mint from LMDE, run:
cat /etc/os-release
Record your Mint edition and version, GPU model, and whether the computer is a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics. That information matters because package availability and compatibility depend on the GPU, Mint release, and its Ubuntu or Debian base.

Choose the driver approach for your GPU
| Graphics hardware | Usual Mint approach | When to investigate further |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce, RTX, GTX, Quadro, or workstation GPU | Open Driver Manager and install the proprietary NVIDIA package marked recommended, if one is offered. | For older hardware, use only a compatible legacy branch offered for that GPU. For very new hardware, a newer supported kernel or Mint release may be needed. |
| AMD Radeon integrated or discrete graphics | Normally use the kernel’s AMDGPU driver and Mint’s Mesa graphics stack; do not install an AMD website package for ordinary desktop use. | New hardware may need newer kernel, firmware, or Mesa support. Radeon PRO and specialized workstation software have separate product-specific requirements. |
| Intel integrated graphics | Normally use the kernel driver and Mesa supplied through Mint’s updates. | Very new Intel graphics or Arc may need a sufficiently recent kernel, firmware, and Mesa. Compute support is a separate matter from desktop display support. |
Linux graphics is a stack: the kernel driver, firmware, and user-space graphics libraries each have different roles. A package name containing “graphics” or “driver” is not enough reason to install it.
Install an NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu-based Linux Mint
Use Driver Manager
- Connect to the Internet. Driver Manager needs a connection to check available drivers, according to the Linux Mint installation guide.
- Open the Mint menu, search for Driver Manager, and launch it.
- Enter your administrator password and wait for the available-driver list to load.
- If Driver Manager offers an NVIDIA driver, select the one marked recommended, then choose Apply Changes.
- Restart the computer when the installation finishes.
The recommended choice is specific to the detected hardware and the packages available for your Mint release. Do not choose a branch just because its number is higher. Names commonly resemble nvidia-driver-XXX; some systems may also offer nvidia-driver-XXX-open. The latter refers to NVIDIA’s open-kernel-module approach, not the complete Nouveau open-source driver stack. Which variant is suitable depends on the GPU and available packages, so follow Driver Manager’s recommendation rather than guessing.
Install from the command line only when you need to
Ubuntu’s supported driver-selection utility can show and install the automatically selected driver:
sudo ubuntu-drivers devices
Review its recommendation, then install the automatically selected driver with:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo ubuntu-drivers install
sudo reboot
If you install a specific package yourself, first confirm that Driver Manager or ubuntu-drivers devices recommends that branch for your system:
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-XXX
Replace XXX with the branch actually available and recommended in your repositories. Ubuntu documents this workflow in its NVIDIA driver installation guide. Package branches change with hardware support and the Mint/Ubuntu base, so no one branch number is a universal answer.

Avoid NVIDIA’s .run installer for an ordinary Mint desktop
Do not normally install a file named like NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-XXX.run from NVIDIA’s website. NVIDIA notes that Linux distributions commonly provide native packages that may integrate better with the distribution’s framework (NVIDIA driver information). A .run installation bypasses APT and Driver Manager and can complicate kernel updates, package removal, library consistency, Secure Boot, or recovery. It can be appropriate in a deliberately managed specialized setup, but it is usually the wrong first choice for Mint.
AMD Radeon: normally use the built-in kernel and Mesa stack
AMD graphics still uses a driver; for most Radeon desktop systems, the kernel supplies amdgpu and Mesa supplies user-space OpenGL and Vulkan components. Firmware and the display-server integration are also part of the overall stack. Keep Mint and its supported kernel updated rather than downloading a generic AMD installer.
Recommended Free Tools
For gaming or Vulkan applications, a system may need sufficiently current kernel, firmware, and Mesa support. The package mesa-vulkan-drivers supplies Mesa’s Vulkan implementation for supported open-source GPUs; it does not replace the kernel driver, firmware, or the whole graphics stack, and Mint may already have the needed components installed.
AMD’s Linux driver page covers selected Radeon and Radeon PRO product families and configurations; it is not a universal replacement for Mint’s built-in stack. Check AMD’s Linux driver support page for the exact product and use case before considering those packages. Older Radeon generations may use the kernel’s radeon driver rather than amdgpu.
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu is an X.Org display-driver package, not the first package to try whenever an AMD card is present. Many systems work through the generic modesetting path; install a component only when a specific supported configuration calls for it.
Intel graphics: normally use Mint’s kernel and Mesa packages
Ordinary Intel integrated graphics generally does not need a separate downloaded desktop driver. The active kernel driver varies by GPU generation and kernel, while Mesa provides user-space graphics support. Intel’s own Linux graphics guidance directs users to platform- and product-specific instructions rather than one package for every Intel GPU.

Newer integrated graphics and Intel Arc can be more sensitive to kernel, Mesa, and firmware versions than established integrated GPUs. If the card is detected but acceleration or a feature is unavailable, first check whether Mint’s supported kernel and graphics stack are recent enough. Intel OpenCL, oneAPI, and other compute software are separate from the driver needed to display the desktop.
LMDE uses a different base
Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is Debian-based, unlike the standard Ubuntu-based Mint editions. Do not assume Ubuntu package availability or the ubuntu-drivers procedure applies identically. Mint’s package repository lists Ubuntu-based and LMDE releases separately. Identify the edition before following a command-line NVIDIA guide; use the package guidance and repositories for that Debian-based release.
Vulkan and video-acceleration packages are supplemental
mesa-vulkan-drivers is a user-space Vulkan implementation for supported Mesa GPUs, not a universal graphics driver. Vulkan, OpenGL, video decoding/encoding acceleration, and display output are related but distinct capabilities. If a Vulkan application reports that Vulkan is unavailable, first verify the GPU driver and installed Mesa stack; do not assume that installing a Vulkan package alone will fix every graphics issue.
Likewise, VA-API video-acceleration components address supported video workloads, not basic display output. Add these components only for a specific application or missing capability and verify the GPU’s support, rather than treating them as required for every Mint installation.

After a reboot, run:
inxi -Gxx
lsmod | grep -E 'nvidia|nouveau|amdgpu|i915|xe'
On a system using NVIDIA’s proprietary driver, this command should report the GPU and driver details:
nvidia-smi
If it says the command is not found or cannot communicate with the driver, the proprietary tools may not be installed or the driver module may not be loaded. It is a useful check, not a test for AMD or Intel graphics. If Vulkan specifically is in question and the utility is installed, run:

For any vendor, compare the detected GPU, loaded kernel driver, and the feature that is failing; a loaded module alone does not guarantee that Vulkan, video acceleration, or application-level GPU selection is configured.

Driver Manager is empty
- Check the Internet connection; the Mint installation guide says Driver Manager requires Internet access to check driver availability.
- Refresh package metadata with
sudo apt update, then reopen Driver Manager. - Confirm whether the system is LMDE, where Ubuntu-based instructions may not apply.
- An empty proprietary-driver list can be normal for AMD or Intel systems already using open-source drivers, or for hardware without a suitable proprietary package in the enabled repositories.
Prepare before a driver change
Update the system and, when practical, create a Timeshift snapshot before a major proprietary-driver change. Mint documents Timeshift within its system-maintenance guidance (Linux Mint Update Manager user guide). If package configuration was interrupted, repair it before trying another driver install:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt -f install
Black screen after installing NVIDIA
Potential causes include an incompatible branch, Secure Boot blocking the kernel module, a hybrid-laptop configuration, a kernel/driver mismatch, remnants from a .run installation, or display-server compatibility. If the graphical desktop does not appear:
- Switch to a text console with Ctrl+Alt+F3 and log in.
- Check for a loaded NVIDIA module with
lsmod | grep nvidia. - Inspect kernel messages with
journalctl -b -k | grep -iE 'nvidia|nouveau|firmware'. - If possible, revert to the open-source option or another recommended package through Driver Manager; otherwise use the console to remove or reinstall the specific problematic package.
- Reboot after the change.
If Secure Boot is enabled, the module may need to be enrolled or signed according to the installer prompts and system configuration. Do not disable security settings or purge packages blindly; first identify the failure and installed packages.
A kernel update breaks NVIDIA
Proprietary NVIDIA kernel modules may need rebuilding for each installed kernel. Mint’s update guidance discusses this DKMS dependency, and a failed rebuild can leave the loaded module and user-space packages out of sync (Linux Mint Update Manager user guide). Check:
dkms status
sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
The headers command targets the currently running kernel; if matching headers are unavailable, check that kernel’s supported header package rather than substituting a different version. Then retry configuration or reinstall the selected driver through Driver Manager.

Hybrid laptop does not use NVIDIA for every application
A laptop can use Intel or AMD integrated graphics for routine, lower-power work and NVIDIA for selected high-performance applications. Installing the NVIDIA driver does not necessarily make every program run on the discrete GPU. Check Mint’s available PRIME or GPU-switching controls and confirm which GPU the affected application is using.
Older or very new hardware is unsupported
For an older NVIDIA card, a newer-numbered driver may no longer support it; use a compatible legacy package if Driver Manager offers one. If none is available, Nouveau or a supported older software combination may be the remaining options. For newly released AMD or Intel hardware, the driver may be present but the kernel, firmware, or Mesa version may be too old. Check support for the exact GPU and Mint release before adding third-party repositories or changing distributions.
Inspect packages before rollback
To see NVIDIA-related packages and recent graphics-related kernel messages, run:
dpkg -l | grep -E 'nvidia|linux-modules'
journalctl -b -k | grep -iE 'nvidia|nouveau|amdgpu|drm|firmware'
Prefer reverting through Driver Manager when available. Advanced users sometimes remove NVIDIA packages with:
