Firefly Image 3 was Adobe’s 2024 image-generation model, not a separate app. Adobe still offers a limited free Firefly tier, but Image 3 is now a legacy model: newer Image 4 and Image 4 Ultra models are prominent in current Firefly workflows, and Adobe removed Image 3 from Photoshop’s Generative Fill picker starting with Photoshop 27.6. As of September 30, 2026, whether Image 3 appears in Firefly depends on the account, region, and workflow.
What Adobe Firefly Image 3 is
Adobe Firefly is the company’s web, mobile, and Creative Cloud generative-AI platform. Firefly Image 3 was one foundation model inside that platform. Adobe introduced it on April 23, 2024, initially in beta through Photoshop and the Firefly web application (Adobe announcement).
That distinction matters. Firefly is the product environment; Image 3 is a model; Photoshop features such as Generate Image, Generative Fill, and Generative Expand are integrations; and Firefly may also expose third-party partner models with different behavior and terms.
What Image 3 was designed for
- Concept development, mood boards, and visual exploration
- Product and marketing mock-ups
- Editorial illustration and concept art
- Photographic variations and background ideas
- Reference-driven style and composition exploration
What Image 3 improved
Adobe presented Image 3 as an improvement in complex prompt interpretation, scene composition, lighting, detail, typography, and reference-based ideation. Those are Adobe’s product claims, not independent benchmark results. The company’s announcement and product blog describe more realistic people and environments, richer small details, and greater control over style and composition (Adobe product blog).

In practice, the model was useful for generating a strong visual direction quickly. It was not a substitute for a designer’s final retouching, typesetting, rights review, or pixel-level control.
Text inside generated images
Image 3 was promoted as better at rendering text, but generated lettering can still fail on spelling, long copy, brand names, small type, and unusual words. Use it for a rough sign, label, or poster concept, then replace important wording in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or another layout tool.
Is Firefly free?
Firefly has a free tier, but “free” does not mean unlimited Image 3 access. Adobe’s current plans page describes limited daily generations across selected image, video, and audio models. Limits, available models, features, and regional access can change (Firefly plans; Firefly features).

Generative credits are usage allocations, not a promise of unlimited images. They are shared across supported Adobe generative features and reset with the billing cycle; standard and premium features can consume them differently (Adobe’s credit overview).

How to generate an image in Firefly
Adobe’s interface changes as models are added or retired, so treat this as the current workflow rather than a guarantee that Image 3 will appear.
- Open Adobe Firefly and sign in or create an Adobe account.
- Choose the image-generation or Text to Image tool.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Open the model selector and choose an available Adobe model. Select Image 3 only if Adobe still lists it for your account and region.
- Set an aspect ratio and choose Art, Photo, or Auto content type where those controls are available (web instructions).
- Generate variations, inspect them, and change one variable at a time.
- Download the result or continue editing in an Adobe application.
Mobile workflow
On iOS or Android, open Firefly, tap Text to image, enter a prompt, choose an available model, set the aspect ratio and content type, and generate variations. Adobe’s mobile documentation says Image 3 produced four variations where it was available (mobile instructions).
Prompt patterns that produce more controllable results
A practical structure is subject + action or pose + setting + composition + lighting + camera or medium + mood + constraints.

Editorial illustration

Keep the subject and composition fixed while changing lighting, palette, lens, material, or mood. Quotation marks can indicate requested wording, but every character should be checked manually. Constraints such as “no watermark” or “no extra fingers” can help, but they are not guarantees.

Commercial use, copyright, and Content Credentials
Adobe says Firefly was designed to generate content intended for commercial use and describes its training approach in its product materials. That is Adobe’s policy and product position, not a universal legal clearance for every output (Firefly FAQ; Firefly product page).
You remain responsible for your prompt, uploaded references, edits, and intended use. Review outputs especially carefully when they contain:
- Trademarks, logos, packaging, or recognizable products
- Recognizable people and publicity rights
- Famous characters, artworks, buildings, or distinctive designs
- Medical, financial, political, or safety claims
- Exact numbers or legally significant wording
For important client work, retain the source assets, prompts, approvals, edits, and disclosure decisions. Partner models exposed inside Firefly are not automatically subject to identical training or licensing terms; check the selected model’s terms (Adobe partner-model guidance).
What Content Credentials do
Firefly-generated files can include Content Credentials identifying AI generation or editing and other provenance information. Credentials support transparency; they are not copyright registrations, proof that every element is cleared, proof that an image is factually true, or an immutable chain of custody. Screenshots, conversions, and publishing platforms may remove metadata (Adobe Firefly).

Why Image 3 may be missing
Photoshop Generative Fill
Adobe announced that Image 3 was removed from the Generative Fill model picker beginning with Photoshop 27.6 on April 28, 2026. It was temporarily available in versions 26.0–27.5, with service retirement planned for August 2026. Adobe recommends Firefly Fill & Expand for the newer workflow (retirement announcement).
Firefly web or mobile
If Image 3 is absent, Adobe may have retired it for your region or plan, limited it to another workflow, changed the interface, or replaced it with newer models. Check the live model selector rather than relying on an old screenshot. Image 3’s disappearance is not necessarily an account error.
Existing documents and custom models
Adobe’s retirement notice says saved Photoshop documents remain accessible even though future generations use newer models. Enterprise custom models trained on Image 3 followed a separate transition schedule; Adobe documented generation availability through June 10, 2026 and subsequent retraining on newer versions (enterprise documentation).

What to use if Image 3 is gone
- Current Adobe text-to-image: try Image 4, Image 4 Ultra, or another model currently listed in your account.
- Photoshop expansion and fill: use Firefly Fill & Expand.
- More model choice: inspect available Firefly partner models and their separate terms.
- Similar legacy appearance: use reference images, style controls, and controlled prompt iteration; an exact match is not guaranteed.
- Final typography: generate the visual concept, then typeset manually.
Who should use Firefly?
Firefly remains compelling for Adobe users who want browser access, a free way to try generative tools, Photoshop and Illustrator handoff, Generative Fill and Expand workflows, and Adobe’s stated commercial-use and provenance approach. Be cautious if you require unlimited free iterations, permanent access to one named model, perfectly consistent characters, exact production typography, or independent legal assurance.
For a new project in 2026, choose the current Firefly model that your account supports rather than building a workflow around Image 3. Treat Image 3 as a historically important Adobe model whose availability is now conditional or ended, not as Adobe’s guaranteed free flagship.
