It added a preview of an integrated virtual-machine manager, rewrote the OpenGL 3.0 Core renderer with shader support, improved timing and input handling, added MDS/MDF optical images, and changed several defaults that affect upgrades from 4.x. It is a historical release now: the project’s current release is 86Box 6.0, dated May 31, 2026, according to the official release list.
What 86Box 5.0 is
86Box is free, open-source, low-level emulation software for IBM PC-compatible hardware. It recreates period CPUs, chipsets, buses, video cards, sound cards, storage controllers and other peripherals rather than acting like a conventional VirtualBox-style virtual machine. That makes it useful for software preservation and for running or testing MS-DOS, older Windows releases, OS/2, BeOS, NEXTSTEP and other systems against specific vintage configurations. The official repository describes its scope and GNU GPL version 2-or-later license.
The 5.0 emulator and its ROM set are separate downloads. Obtain the matching ROM release from the official ROM repository; 86Box does not include commercial operating systems, BIOS images or copyrighted software.
The integrated machine manager changes startup and storage
Opening 86Box directly now opens the built-in manager. Earlier versions could create or start a machine in the current folder when the executable was launched directly. Version 5.0’s manager was released as a preview and was intended to replace the old 86Box Manager and simple front ends, not every advanced third-party workflow.

Default virtual-machine directories
| Host | Default location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Users[username]86Box VMs |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/86Box/Virtual Machines |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/86Box/Virtual Machines |
Existing machines are not necessarily moved automatically. Use Tools > Preferences > System Directory to point 86Box at the directory containing them, or move the machine folders into the new location. Restart 86Box after changing this setting. For a one-off launch that bypasses the manager, use:
86Box -P <machine-path>
86Box --vmpath <machine-path>
The Windows-only 86Box Manager repository was archived on August 23, 2025. Community alternatives such as Avalonia 86, 86Box Manager X, sl86, Linbox-qt5 and MacBox are listed by the project, but their availability and maintenance should be checked individually.
Graphics and timing received substantial changes
OpenGL 3.0 Core and shaders
86Box 5.0 substantially reworked the OpenGL 3.0 Core renderer. It supports multiple shaders, .glslp shader files and shader-parameter configuration in the user interface, enabling CRT simulation and other display effects. The Qt OpenGL and OpenGL ES renderers were removed. Renderer selection can affect host-driver compatibility, scaling and performance, so retain a known-good configuration before changing it.

Smoother input and output, with a low-end caveat
The release announcement attributes smoother behavior to changes in frame timing, input polling and video rendering. It also addresses Windows input responsiveness, remote-desktop mouse handling, focus loss around Alt+Tab, Linux mouse capture, Wayland keyboard shortcuts and some HiDPI sizing cases. On low-end hosts, the new timing behavior may reduce performance; the announcement recommends setting CPU frame size to Larger frames for behavior closer to version 4.2.
Input controls and preferences changed
Mouse capture
The universal release shortcut is now Ctrl+End. The former Windows-specific F8+F12 combination cannot be restored through the new shortcut customization. Releasing capture with the middle mouse button remains available where the host supports it.
Custom shortcuts
Shortcut configuration is available in the Settings window’s Input section. Defaults documented for 5.0 include:

System-wide preferences
Preferences such as language, mouse sensitivity and other settings from the Preferences window became system-wide in 5.0 and newer. Existing per-machine preference changes were reset during this transition, and custom key combinations were not saved system-wide at the time of the 5.0 announcement. Record important renderer, input, language and performance settings before upgrading from 4.x.

Version 5.0 added MDS/MDF image support, a format associated with Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools. It also tightened drive emulation: DVD media and folders larger than 1 GB require an emulated drive with DVD-ROM capability, such as 86BOX 86B_DVD. A failed mount does not necessarily indicate a corrupt image; check the selected drive model first.

Host-platform support
86Box 5.0 was the final release supporting macOS High Sierra 10.13 and Mojave 10.14. The project said the next release would require Catalina 10.15 or newer, while Intel support was not being discontinued at that time. Official 32-bit host builds had already ended, although compiling from source remained possible for 32-bit and other unsupported architectures.
The current repository lists 64-bit Intel Core 2, AMD Athlon 64 or ARMv8-and-newer processors, at least 4 GB of RAM, Windows 7 SP1 or newer on Intel/AMD, Windows 11 or newer on ARM, and Ubuntu 16.04, Debian 9.0 or comparable Linux distributions from 2016 onward; macOS 10.14 Mojave or newer is listed as well. These are current repository requirements, not a guarantee of the exact 5.0 installer requirements.
How to upgrade safely
- Back up every existing machine folder and configuration file.
- For a historical 5.0 installation, download the emulator from the official v5.0 release and download its matching ROM set separately.
- Extract the emulator and ROM files according to the project’s layout. The ROM documentation explains extraction, the required
romsdirectory and asset guidance. - Open the manager and verify Tools > Preferences > System Directory. Point it to your existing machines if they are not listed, then restart.
- Recheck renderer, shader, language, mouse, frame-size and shortcut settings.
- Test mouse release with Ctrl+End and verify any DVD image with a DVD-capable emulated drive.
- If the manager does not suit your workflow, launch a machine directly with
-Por--vmpath.
Should you upgrade from 4.x?
| 5.0 is a good fit when you… | Test first or delay when you… |
|---|---|
| Want the integrated manager, MDS/MDF support, configurable shortcuts or shader effects. | Depend on an old standalone manager or have many machines whose paths and preferences must remain unchanged. |
| Need fixes for input, focus loss, remote-desktop handling or HiDPI cases. | Run a low-end host where new frame timing may lower performance. |
| Use a capable OpenGL 3.0 Core setup and want smoother timing. | Rely on Qt OpenGL/OpenGL ES configurations or generic CD drives for DVD media. |
| Need newer hardware emulation and compatibility fixes. | Must retain High Sierra or Mojave as a long-term platform; 5.0 is their final supported release. |

How 86Box compares with simpler alternatives
DOSBox-X is generally more convenient when the goal is DOS or Windows 3.x software rather than reproducing a broad hardware configuration. PCem is a historically related vintage-PC emulator whose current maintenance should be checked. QEMU is broad and scriptable but less focused on the period-PC experience. VirtualBox is conventional desktop virtualization and is not designed to reproduce a specific vintage chipset, video card or sound card.
The Bottom Line
86Box 5.0 was a genuine August 24, 2025 release with meaningful manager, renderer, input and optical-media changes. Upgrade carefully—especially around VM paths, reset preferences and DVD-capable drives—and use 86Box 6.0 instead if you simply need the current release.
