AWS is usually the stronger default for broad infrastructure choice, cloud-native service composition and teams already skilled in AWS. Azure is often the better fit for Microsoft-centric organizations, Windows and SQL Server estates, hybrid identity and eligible Microsoft licensing benefits. The right decision depends on your workload, region, operating model, existing contracts and three-year total cost—not on a single VM price or service-count claim.
AWS and Azure at a glance

| Pricing approach | Pay-as-you-go, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot and enterprise commitments | Pay-as-you-go, reservations, savings programs, Enterprise Agreements and Azure Hybrid Benefit |
| Main operational risk | Large service choice can increase design and governance complexity | Microsoft-specific integration and licensing can obscure portability and actual cost |
AWS is Amazon’s public-cloud platform; Azure is Microsoft’s. Both provide infrastructure and platform services, managed databases, storage, networking, containers, serverless computing, analytics, AI, security, monitoring, governance and hybrid products. The provider is not the same thing as an account or subscription: a region is a geographic deployment area, an availability zone is an isolated location within a region, and account, subscription, tenant, organization, project, resource-group and management-group boundaries control billing, identity and policy.
For a first-party service mapping, see Microsoft’s AWS-to-Azure guidance. It is useful translation material, not a claim that mapped products have identical behavior.
The deciding factor: ecosystem fit
When AWS usually fits better
- Your team already operates AWS safely and has AWS-native tooling, commitments or partners.
- The design depends on services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, EventBridge, ECS, EKS or other AWS primitives.
- You need extensive choices across compute, storage, databases, networking and event-driven architecture.
- Infrastructure flexibility matters more than Microsoft ecosystem integration.
When Azure usually fits better
- Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio or Microsoft enterprise agreements are already central.
- Hybrid identity, on-premises management or Azure Arc is a primary requirement.
- Eligible Windows Server or SQL Server licenses make Azure Hybrid Benefit economically meaningful.
- Your procurement, skills and governance processes are already Microsoft-oriented.
Azure is not limited to Windows: it supports Linux, open-source databases, Kubernetes, serverless applications, analytics and AI. AWS can be a sensible home for a Microsoft workload when AWS expertise, dependencies or commitments outweigh licensing advantages.

Service-by-service comparison
The following mappings are approximate. Compare data models, quotas, APIs, failure behavior, billing meters and operational responsibility before selecting a migration target.
| Capability | AWS | Azure | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autoscaling | EC2 Auto Scaling | Virtual Machine Scale Sets | Policies, health checks and integration points |
| Block storage | Amazon EBS | Azure Managed Disks | Performance tiers, bursting, snapshots and attachment rules |
| File storage | Amazon EFS / FSx | Azure Files and managed file services | Protocols, performance modes and regional availability |
| Relational databases | Amazon RDS / Aurora | Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance and Azure Database services | Engine compatibility, extensions, HA and licensing |
| NoSQL | DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Keyspaces and Neptune | Cosmos DB, Table Storage and managed open-source databases | Data model, consistency, partitioning, indexes and request pricing |
| Containers without Kubernetes | ECS, Fargate and App Runner | Container Apps, Container Instances and App Service | Isolation, scaling and platform operations |
| Messaging and events | EventBridge, SNS, SQS and Kinesis | Event Grid, Service Bus, Event Hubs and Stream Analytics | Ordering, delivery, replay, retention and throughput |
| Security posture | Security Hub, GuardDuty, Inspector, Config and Macie | Defender for Cloud, Sentinel, Defender products and Policy | Coverage, licensing, alert quality and response workload |
Compute: benchmark the architecture, not the brand
Both providers offer general-purpose, compute-, memory- and storage-optimized instances, burstable machines, GPU and other accelerated options, dedicated hosts, bare metal, Arm processors, local NVMe, confidential-computing features, spot or preemptible capacity and committed pricing. Compare the complete machine configuration: CPU architecture, memory, network bandwidth, packet limits, disk performance, operating system, image, licensing and autoscaling behavior.
Do not declare one provider faster without a controlled test. Benchmark the same vCPU count, memory, storage performance, OS, database version, request volume, concurrency, availability target and data-transfer pattern in the target region. Test Arm compatibility for proprietary binaries, container images and vendor support before committing.
Storage and data transfer
Evaluate object, block and file storage separately. For object storage, include access tier, minimum duration, retrieval and request fees, versioning, lifecycle rules, immutability, encryption, replication, private endpoints and egress. A “price per GB” comparison misses the cost of millions of operations, frequent retrieval, replication and outbound traffic.
For a meaningful estimate, model 100 TB stored, 20 TB added monthly, 50 TB read monthly, 10 million operations, cross-region replication, 5 TB monthly egress and both 30-day and 365-day retention. Enter identical assumptions into the AWS Pricing Calculator and Azure Pricing Calculator, recording region and date.

Databases
Relational workloads
List the required engine—MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle or MariaDB—then verify extensions, compatibility, high availability, read replicas, backups, point-in-time recovery, maintenance windows, serverless modes and licensing. Azure can be particularly attractive for an existing SQL Server estate when eligible Azure Hybrid Benefit reduces licensing cost; eligibility depends on license ownership, Software Assurance or equivalent terms, region and deployment type.
NoSQL workloads
DynamoDB and Cosmos DB are not interchangeable substitutes. Their APIs, partition-key design, consistency choices, global replication, transaction behavior, indexing and capacity billing differ. Model the access pattern and failure requirements rather than choosing by product category.
Containers and Kubernetes
EKS and AKS both manage a Kubernetes control plane, but you still own application reliability, node pools or capacity, networking, identity, storage classes, upgrades, policy and observability. EKS is a natural fit for AWS networking, IAM, load balancing and monitoring. AKS is attractive where Entra ID, Azure Policy, Defender for Cloud and Azure Monitor are central.

If the team wants containers without running a full Kubernetes platform, compare ECS/Fargate with Azure Container Apps or App Service. Avoid adopting Kubernetes solely for portability: cluster networking, ingress, storage, identity and observability remain provider-specific.
Serverless and event-driven systems
Compare Lambda with Functions, EventBridge with Event Grid, SNS/SQS with Service Bus or Event Hubs, Step Functions with Logic Apps or Durable Functions, and API Gateway with API Management. Check trigger support, duration limits, concurrency, cold starts, VPC/VNet integration, durable workflows, tracing and billing granularity.

Networking can decide the bill
Compare VPC with Virtual Network, subnets, routing, security groups or network security groups, network ACLs, NAT gateways, private endpoints, DNS, load balancers, CDN, VPN, dedicated connectivity, transit networking and cross-region links. Model internet egress, cross-zone traffic, replication, NAT processing, private endpoint use, load-balancer processing and dedicated circuits.
AWS generally does not charge for data transfer in, but that does not make a network architecture free. AWS announced a 500-Mbps free tier for AWS Interconnect—multicloud in 2026; the announcement described Azure support as coming later in 2026, so verify availability before relying on it: AWS announcement.

AWS provides IAM users and roles, policies, permission boundaries, resource policies, IAM Identity Center, Organizations, Cognito, KMS and secrets services. Azure provides Entra ID, managed identities, role-based access control, management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, Conditional Access and Key Vault.
Azure often integrates more directly where Entra ID and Microsoft 365 already anchor identity. AWS can be preferable where Organizations, IAM roles and AWS-native policy boundaries are established. Integration is not the same as security: least privilege, segmentation, logging, key management, vulnerability handling, configuration enforcement and incident response determine the result.
Evaluate shared responsibility, privileged access, encryption, customer-managed keys, posture management, threat detection, SIEM, WAF, DDoS controls, data residency, confidential computing, audit logs and regulated-region availability. Hybrid and multicloud
AWS offers Outposts, Systems Manager, VMware-related options and hybrid Kubernetes approaches. Azure offers Azure Arc, Azure Stack-related products and Azure-centered hybrid identity and policy. Choose based on physical locality, disconnected operation, VMware estate, sovereignty, latency, hardware ownership, support and upgrade responsibility.
Multicloud is justified by a specific resilience, regulatory, commercial or capability requirement. It can also duplicate identity, networks, logging, skills and incident-response processes, while adding cross-cloud transfer and ownership ambiguity. Design unified identity, observability, policy and tested failover before calling it resilience.
AI and analytics change quickly
As of August 18, 2026, compare exact models, regions, quotas and prices rather than broad provider reputations. For AI, evaluate foundation-model APIs, hosting, fine-tuning, vector search, retrieval-augmented generation, GPU supply, private networking, governance, monitoring, safety controls and integration with existing data and developer tools.
For analytics, price the whole path: ingestion, lake storage, catalog, batch and stream processing, warehouse queries, BI users, retention, concurrency and data movement. Product labels such as “warehouse” or “streaming” do not establish equivalent architecture.
