The “DNS server not responding” message means your browser could not resolve the site’s domain name; it does not, by itself, mean WordPress is broken. The problem may be on your device or network, with the domain’s status or DNS settings, or at the hosting provider. Start by testing another network, then check the domain, the provider managing its DNS, and the host’s required records before changing anything.
What the error means—and what it doesn’t
DNS translates a domain name into the destination a browser needs to reach a website. WordPress runs only after the browser reaches the server, so a browser-level DNS failure is different from a WordPress database connection error or another application error. WordPress documents those as separate kinds of problems in its common WordPress errors guide.
The message alone cannot tell you which part failed. Possible causes include the device or network’s DNS resolver, an inactive or misconfigured domain, incorrect nameserver delegation, website records that do not match the host’s instructions, or a hosting-side problem. The checks below help narrow down which provider or layer needs attention.
1. Find out whether the problem is local or widespread
Try opening the site on another device, over mobile data, or on another Wi-Fi network. WordPress.com also recommends trying another Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection when a site appears offline (Why is my WordPress.com site down?).

- It works on another network: Focus first on the original device, network, or configured DNS resolver. This comparison narrows the scope but does not establish the exact cause.
- It fails across networks: Check the domain and DNS configuration, then ask the DNS provider or host to verify the settings they control.
2. Check the domain’s status and recent changes
If the domain is registered through WordPress.com, open the domain area of the Hosting Dashboard and review its status or any displayed error guidance. If it is registered elsewhere, check its status with that registrar. WordPress.com’s domain error troubleshooting guide covers common custom-domain and DNS configuration problems.
Think about whether the domain was recently transferred or connected to a new host, or whether anyone changed its nameservers, A records, or CNAME records. A recent change can help explain the timing, but it does not prove which setting is wrong.

3. Identify the provider that actually manages DNS
Check the domain’s current nameservers and determine which provider manages the active DNS zone. That provider may be the registrar, WordPress.com, your hosting company, or a separate DNS service. WordPress.com explains that nameservers determine where a domain’s DNS is hosted and managed.
Edit records at the authoritative DNS provider, not automatically at the company where you bought the domain or installed WordPress. If the nameservers point to a third-party DNS service, changes made only in the registrar’s DNS panel may not affect the live zone.

4. Compare the website records with your host’s instructions
At the provider managing the active DNS zone, compare the records used for the website with the exact values supplied by your current host. A host may instruct you to point the domain using A records rather than changing nameservers; the right setup depends on that host and your configuration. WordPress.com describes both DNS record management and connecting domains in its DNS records guide and domain connection guide.
- Do not guess an IP address or copy a target from an unrelated site. Ask the host for the values required for your account.
- Before editing, record or export the existing DNS configuration.
- Check whether email or other services depend on existing DNS records. Replacing records or changing nameservers without preserving the setup can disrupt those services.
5. Allow time for a DNS change to take effect
After making an intentional DNS change, allow time for it to appear across the internet. WordPress.com Support says DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to take effect; this is provider guidance, not a guarantee that every change will take that long (Manage DNS Records for a WordPress.com Domain, last reviewed August 19, 2026).

During that period, avoid repeated speculative edits. Recheck the nameservers and relevant records at the provider managing the zone. If the expected change window passes without resolution, ask that provider to verify delegation and records, and ask the host to confirm the website targets.

When you ask for help, describe where the error appears, whether the site fails on multiple networks, and whether the domain or DNS settings changed recently. Direct the question to the provider best placed to check the relevant layer:

- Registrar or DNS provider: Ask them to check domain status, nameserver delegation, and the active zone’s records.
- Hosting provider: Ask them to confirm the correct website targets and investigate possible server-side faults.
- Network or device support: If the site works elsewhere, ask about the original network’s or device’s connectivity and DNS resolver configuration.
If WordPress Site Health reports a loopback problem
A message from WordPress Site Health about a failed loopback or scheduled task is not the same as a visitor’s browser being unable to resolve the site. A loopback is a request WordPress makes back to its own site. WordPress recommends normal plugin and theme troubleshooting first, then contacting the host about DNS, firewall, SSL, or HTTP-authentication settings that may block the request (WordPress loopback documentation).
