Make supports two complementary MCP integrations: Make MCP Server lets an external MCP-compatible client run selected Make scenarios, while Make MCP Client lets a Make scenario call tools on an external MCP server. Choose based on which side needs to call the other, then configure the relevant connection and permissions.
Choose the right Make MCP direction
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, provides a way for compatible clients and servers to exchange available tools and their inputs. Make supports both sides of that relationship. The names are easy to mix up, so start with the direction of the call:

For example, choose the server route when an external assistant needs to trigger a workflow you built in Make. Choose the client route when a Make workflow needs a capability hosted by another service or your organization. These routes are distinct; exposing a Make scenario does not itself add an external tool to that scenario.
Route A: expose a Make scenario to an MCP client
Make MCP Server publishes eligible Make scenarios as tools that a connected MCP client can discover and call. Make also offers account-management tools when the connection has the relevant permissions. Set up the scenario and decide the access boundary before connecting a client.

1. Prepare the scenario’s inputs and outputs
Build and test the workflow in Make. Define the inputs the client must provide and the outputs it should receive. Inputs make required values explicit; outputs give the client a deliberate result to interpret rather than requiring it to infer what happened inside the scenario.
Keep the interface focused: expose only the fields and actions the client needs. A scenario that expects data the client cannot provide, or returns no useful result, may be discoverable but still be difficult to use reliably.
2. Activate the scenario for on-demand execution
Make’s MCP server requirements specify that a scenario used as an MCP tool must be active and configured for on-demand scheduling. Confirm both settings before diagnosing a missing tool in the client. A saved but inactive scenario, or one set up for a different schedule rather than on-demand execution, will not meet the stated MCP tool requirements.

3. Select OAuth or an MCP token
Make documents two connection options for its hosted server: OAuth and an MCP token. The OAuth connection URL is https://mcp.make.com. A token connection uses a zone-specific URL; Make documents that the token can be included in that URL or supplied in a Bearer Authorization header. Use the zone and connection details shown in Make’s current Developer Hub instructions rather than guessing an endpoint.

The documented server is cloud-hosted and uses stateless Streamable HTTP. In the MCP client, follow its instructions for adding a remote server and enter the appropriate connection details and authentication method. Client configuration screens differ, so there is no single universal menu path.
4. Grant only the scopes you need
Scenario-run scopes allow a client to view and run activated on-demand scenarios. Management scopes can extend access to Make account resources, including scenarios, teams, connections, webhooks, and data stores. Those are materially broader permissions than simply running a scenario.

- Management scopes require a paid plan.
- Make says OAuth is the option that lets a user restrict access to one Make organization.
- Treat an MCP token as a credential: keep it out of public code, logs, and shared screenshots, and revoke or replace it if exposed.
These permissions are not interchangeable. If the client only needs to run a workflow, avoid granting account-management access. If organization-level restriction matters, use the documented OAuth option and verify the organization selected during authorization.
5. Discover and test the tools
After connecting, inspect the tools exposed by the server. Make’s Developer Hub describes discovery through connector settings, an MCP command, MCP Inspector, or a tools/list request, depending on the client and workflow. Confirm the expected scenario tool appears, review its input fields, and make a small test call with valid input before relying on it in a production agent.
Verify the returned output and the scenario’s execution in Make. A successful connection only proves that the client can reach the server; it does not prove that the scenario received the right values or completed the intended work.

Route B: call an external MCP server from Make
Use Make MCP Client when a Make automation needs a tool hosted outside Make—for example, an internal capability or a partner’s MCP service. The external server controls its own tool availability, authentication, and configuration. Make’s product materials cite services such as GitHub, Webflow, and PayPal as examples of remote-server use; the specific tools available depend on the server you connect.
Set up the external tool call
- Open the Make scenario or agent that needs the external capability, then add Make’s MCP Client module.
- Enter the external MCP server URL provided by that server’s operator. Do not reuse Make’s hosted server URL unless the external service specifically tells you to.
- Choose the authentication method supported by the server. Make describes OAuth and token-based authentication; the remote server determines what credentials and authorization steps are valid.
- Select a tool from the tools the server exposes. If the expected tool is absent, check the server URL, authentication, and the remote server’s own tool configuration.
- Map scenario values into the module’s displayed input fields, using the field names and help text. Make describes visual input mapping and schema validation.
- Run the scenario with representative values, then inspect the response and use it in later modules as needed.
This route is useful when the workflow should call an outside tool rather than make its own scenario available to an AI client. The MCP Client module’s displayed schema helps map values, but it cannot guarantee that a remote tool will accept every value or complete successfully; validate against the external server’s requirements.

Make’s product FAQ says MCP Server and MCP Client are included with Make plans, while Make scenarios executed through the integration consume credits. That inclusion does not mean every server permission is available on every plan: scenario-run scopes are available across plans, whereas management scopes require a paid plan.
For a process that may outlast the applicable output timeout, design the scenario to return a prompt response where possible, and consult current Make documentation for supported ways to retrieve later output. Do not assume that changing from OAuth to a token will remove the timeout; the documented limits remain finite for both connection methods.
Troubleshooting common Make MCP problems
- The scenario is missing from the client’s tool list: confirm that it is active, uses on-demand scheduling, and that the connection has a scenario-run scope. Then refresh or repeat tool discovery in the client.
- The client cannot supply required values or make sense of the result: review the scenario’s defined inputs and outputs. Map the client-provided fields to the expected input schema and return an explicit result.
- The client connects but is denied access: review the scopes granted during authorization and whether the account has the plan eligibility required for management scopes. If access must be restricted to one organization, use OAuth as documented by Make.
- A call ends before the workflow finishes: compare the operation with the timeout for its tool type and connection method. Restructure long work to return promptly, or use a later retrieval pattern only if supported by Make’s current documentation.
- The MCP Client cannot find an external tool: verify the remote URL, authentication, and that the tool is enabled and exposed by the server. Make can list tools the server offers; it cannot make an unexposed remote tool available.
- The external tool rejects mapped data: compare each mapped value with the tool’s displayed schema and help text, then check the remote service’s own rules for valid values and permissions.

Which route should you use?
Use Make MCP Server when an external MCP client needs to run a Make scenario, and Make MCP Client when a Make workflow needs to call a tool hosted elsewhere. The scenario’s activation and on-demand schedule, the granted scopes, and the relevant timeout are the key checks for a server-side connection; for a client-side connection, verify the external URL, authentication, exposed tool, and mapped inputs.
