Use a policy that fits your site’s customizations and recovery process rather than switching everything off or enabling everything blindly.
What automatic updates cover
Manage WordPress core, plugins, and themes as separate update scopes. Since WordPress 5.5, administrators can opt individual plugins and themes into automatic updates from the dashboard. Plugin updates also support bulk enable and disable actions. Core update behavior is configured separately.
WordPress recommends keeping plugins and themes updated for security. Automatic updates can reduce the chance that routine maintenance is forgotten, but an update can still cause a compatibility problem. The right balance depends on your site’s custom code, testing workflow, and ability to restore a working version.
Set a safe update policy
1. Inventory what you manage
Review the Plugins screen for installed plugins and their auto-update controls, and use Appearance to review themes. Identify who is responsible for core, plugin, and theme updates, including any host or management service that may control them.

Before enabling plugin or theme auto-updates, confirm that your backup process regularly covers both site files and the database. Just as important, verify that you can restore those backups; having backup files is not the same as having a tested recovery path. WordPress recommends regular automatic backups before enabling plugin and theme auto-updates. See the WordPress backup documentation.
3. Choose plugin and theme scope item by item
Enable automatic updates for items that fit your maintenance and recovery plan. If a plugin or theme is customized, business-critical, or needs compatibility testing, you may prefer to update it through a staging or review process instead. Avoid treating “off for everything” as a security strategy: disabled automatic updates leave you responsible for applying updates another way.
4. Choose core update scope deliberately
For sites that use configuration constants, WordPress documents two distinct controls. In wp-config.php, WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE set to false disables core updates, true enables minor and major releases, and 'minor' enables minor releases. AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED disables automatic updates more broadly. These settings affect update behavior and should not be changed casually; review the WordPress developer handbook’s automatic update guidance and your site’s existing configuration before editing them. WordPress notes that testing changes on staging before production can be a reason to delay automatic updates.
When do plugin and theme auto-updates happen?
WordPress documentation says plugin and theme auto-updates normally run twice per day. That is a documented default cadence, not a promise of an exact clock time or a guarantee that every scheduled run will succeed. These updates rely on WordPress Cron tasks to run.

Monitor outcomes and troubleshoot missed updates
Use update notifications
WordPress sends email notifications about successful, failed, or mixed plugin and theme auto-update attempts. Treat these messages as an operational signal: investigate failures and mixed results rather than assuming that one successful update means every item updated.
Check Site Health and Cron
If scheduled plugin or theme updates do not appear to run, open Tools > Site Health and review reported errors. Because the update process depends on WordPress Cron tasks, scheduling problems are one area to investigate. The Site Health documentation explains the screen and its checks.
If the controls are missing
If you cannot find plugin or theme auto-update controls, a hosting provider or plugin may have partly or fully disabled the feature. Check with the party managing your WordPress configuration before assuming the dashboard is malfunctioning; a deliberate host-level policy may be in effect. Do not customize WordPress by editing core files directly: those changes are lost when core is upgraded. Use supported customization methods instead, and test changes in staging when your workflow requires a production review.
