To reduce invalid AdSense clicks on a WordPress site, never click your own live ads or solicit clicks, keep ads visually separate from navigation and interactive controls, and investigate suspicious traffic sources. What Google considers invalid traffic
Invalid traffic includes clicks or impressions that may artificially increase advertiser costs or publisher earnings. It covers accidental activity as well as deliberate fraud: examples include clicking your own ads, repeated activity, encouraging people to click, and automated traffic. Prevent accidental clicks in your WordPress layout
Review the pages visitors actually see, not just the ad insertion settings in WordPress. Ads should be clearly distinguishable from editorial content, navigation, and controls. A visitor should not mistake an ad for a menu item, download link, play button, video or game control, dropdown, or application element.
Check templates, widgets, posts, and responsive layouts, especially where visitors interact rapidly or repeatedly. Avoid misleading labels or headings, and do not place ads so close to controls that visitors could confuse them. Google does not specify a universal safe spacing measurement; assess whether the ad is unmistakably separate and follow its current ad placement policies.
Do not click ads to test or inspect them
Never click your own live ads, even to see where they lead, and never ask friends, readers, or staff to click them. If you want to inspect an advertiser, use the destination URL directly or Google’s Ad review center rather than clicking an ad on your site. You may view your own pages, but avoid clicking ads and excessive reloads. Google’s common questions about invalid traffic addresses both site visits and accidental clicks. An isolated accidental self-click is not the same as intentional or repeated click generation: Google says you do not need to contact it every time an accident occurs, but you must avoid clicking ads going forward. Monitor traffic and investigate anomalies
Use reporting that helps isolate where unusual activity originates. Google recommends breaking reports down by URL channels, custom channels, and ad units, and using analytics to review visitor behavior and traffic sources. If activity appears suspicious, review available logs and look for patterns by source, page, device, and timing. Check that your ad implementation has no errors and behaves consistently across browsers and platforms.

Be cautious with traffic partners, purchased traffic, and services that promise clicks or impressions. Google warns publishers against untrusted or low-quality sources. If you suspect invalid activity, follow Google’s recommendation to remove ads during the investigation and restore them once the source is no longer present. Can blocking an IP address prevent invalid clicks?
Google says it cannot block IP addresses submitted by publishers. Addresses may be shared or dynamically allocated, and blocking them could prevent valid clicks. A WordPress administrator may be able to block suspicious visitors at the site level, but that does not replace identifying the traffic source, investigating the activity, or complying with AdSense policies. What happens if Google detects invalid traffic?
Google says it uses automated systems and human review to detect invalid traffic. Depending on the circumstances, it may limit ad serving, suspend an account, or close it; earnings associated with policy violations may be withheld. A suspension stops ads for the duration of the suspension. There is no placement, plugin, or monitoring method that guarantees activity will not be filtered or that enforcement will not occur.
