Start with Ctrl+S/Cmd+S, undo and redo, then add formatting, block movement, List View and Command Palette shortcuts as your workflow requires.
This guide covers the current WordPress.org Block Editor reference for Windows/Linux-style keyboards and Mac. Keyboard layouts, browser behavior, WordPress version and editor context can affect whether a command works. Press Shift+Alt+H on Windows/Linux or Control+Option+H on Mac to open the shortcut list inside the editor.
21 WordPress Block Editor shortcuts
The table uses the Windows/Linux convention in the first column and Mac notation in the second. Linux generally follows the Windows Ctrl and Alt mappings, although desktop environments can reserve some combinations.

Shortcut behavior can change as WordPress evolves. If a combination does nothing, open the in-editor reference with the help shortcut and check the command for your installation.

Use shortcuts in a practical learning order
1. Learn the safety net first
Use save, undo and redo before memorizing anything else. Save after a meaningful change, and use undo rather than manually repairing an accidental formatting or block operation.
2. Add everyday text formatting
Bold, italic, underline and link commands are fastest when text is already selected. On Mac, use Command; on Windows/Linux, use Ctrl. Avoid confusing browser-level shortcuts with commands shown by the Block Editor.
3. Speed up block structure
Duplicate, remove, insert-before, insert-after and move commands are most useful when building repeated sections. Select several blocks when you need to move or duplicate a complete group; the editor supports multi-selection for structural editing.
4. Use List View as your outline
List View is more than a layer panel: it reveals the hierarchy of nested blocks and lets you select a block by name. Open it with Shift+Alt+O/Control+Option+O, expand only the branch you need, and collapse branches again when the page becomes crowded.

To keep the outline available, open List View and use its options menu to enable the setting that keeps it open by default. This is especially helpful in the Site Editor, where you may be navigating templates, template parts and page structure rather than only one post.
5. Try the Command Palette for broader tasks
In supported WordPress admin and editor contexts, Ctrl+K/Cmd+K searches commands and can help you navigate to posts or pages, styles, templates and dashboard areas. Availability is version- and environment-dependent; the public-facing site is not the same context as the administration interface, and some setups do not support the key combination.

Slash commands complement keyboard shortcuts
Inside an empty paragraph block, type /list and choose List to insert a List block without opening the inserter. Slash search is an editor command rather than a global keyboard shortcut, but it is often faster for inserting common blocks.
Block Editor and Classic Editor are different
These mappings are for the WordPress Block Editor and related Site Editor interfaces. The Classic Editor has a separate shortcut list and different behavior; do not assume a Block Editor command will work there. If your site still uses Classic Editor, consult WordPress.org’s Classic Editor reference for its own mappings.

Why a shortcut may not work
- Wrong editor: confirm that you are in the Block Editor, not Classic Editor or the public front end.
- Text versus block focus: Ctrl/Cmd+K may create a link when text is selected but invoke the Command Palette in another supported context.
- Browser or operating-system conflicts: browser extensions, desktop utilities and keyboard layouts can intercept combinations before WordPress receives them.
- Version or feature availability: Command Palette and some visibility or Site Editor commands depend on the WordPress version and active context.
- Focus is elsewhere: click the editor canvas or select a block before using a block operation.
A compact starter set
If 21 commands feel excessive, begin with these eight: save, undo, redo, bold, italic, link, duplicate block and List View. Once they are automatic, add move, insert and Command Palette commands that match the kind of pages you build.
