A WordPress database disk-full error is normally a MySQL or hosting-storage problem, not a setting you can repair in WordPress. Stop making database changes, preserve a suitable backup, record the complete error, and ask your hosting provider to check the account quota, database-server disk, temporary directory, and cache storage. The provider must verify which resource is exhausted before applying the remedy.
First, confirm what failed
The related message Error establishing a database connection has several possible causes. A disk-full condition is only one of them, so do not assume storage exhaustion from that wording alone.
- Copy the complete error text, including any MySQL error number or detail.
- Note when the problem began and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Check whether both the public site and
/wp-adminfail, or whether only one area is affected. - Record any recent hosting, plugin, import, backup, or migration change.
WordPress describes the specific MySQL disk-full error as a host-side issue: “This is a MySQL error and has nothing to do with WordPress directly; you should contact your host about it.” Incorrect database credentials and other host problems can produce a similar connection message, so the exact text matters.
Protect the site before changing anything
Back up before repairing tables, deleting data, changing configuration, or running database commands. Use a staging copy for experiments when your host provides one.

Know what a database export contains
A database export preserves database content such as posts, pages, comments, and settings. It does not include themes, plugins, media uploads, or wp-config.php. If you need to recover the entire site, arrange file backups as well as the database backup.
If the site is already unavailable, ask the host whether it can create a snapshot or backup at the account or server level before making storage changes.
Understand which storage limit is full
Ask the provider to identify the exhausted resource rather than requesting a generic “WordPress fix.” WordPress and the MySQL manual distinguish several conditions:

MySQL documents both disk-full and quota-exceeded behavior. The appropriate fix could be freeing server-side space, removing an accumulation of temporary files, increasing a quota, or correcting another host-level condition. Do not label one cause as confirmed until the provider checks it.
Use WordPress diagnostics without pretending they fix storage
Review Site Health
In the dashboard, open Tools → Site Health → Info. Review the reported server architecture, web server, PHP details, and database information. This can help you give the host useful context, but it does not show every account quota or the server’s available disk space. Provider-managed settings still require the host to inspect or change them.
Enable temporary debug logging only when application errors are relevant
If the site remains accessible and you need to distinguish an application error from the storage incident, WordPress can log errors to wp-content/debug.log. In wp-config.php, the relevant constants are:

Hiding errors from page output prevents visitors from seeing sensitive details, but the log itself can contain paths, queries, or other information. Restrict direct web access to the log, or place diagnostic logs above the public document root when your environment allows it. Disable temporary debugging and remove old diagnostic logs after the cause is understood; logging does not create disk space or raise a database quota.

Send the provider the full error, start time, affected URLs, your account or database name, and the results from Site Health. Ask it to check all of the following:
- Whether the database account has reached its storage quota.
- Whether the MySQL server’s filesystem is out of free space.
- Whether the MySQL temporary directory (
tmpdir, often/tmp) is out of space or has too many files. - Whether a server cache or cache partition is full.
- Whether host-side MySQL errors or maintenance events coincide with the outage.
Ask what was changed, which resource was exhausted, and whether the provider expects the issue to recur. If the same limit repeatedly blocks normal operation, discuss a larger database quota or a managed MySQL/MariaDB plan only after the provider confirms that capacity is the constraint. A plan change cannot correct incorrect credentials or an unrelated server fault.

Verify recovery and clean up diagnostics
- Wait for the provider to confirm that the storage or quota condition is resolved.
- Load the public site and sign in to
/wp-admin. - Test database-backed actions such as opening a post, saving a draft, submitting a comment if enabled, and uploading a small media file.
- Check the host’s error view and WordPress logs for a recurrence.
- Disable temporary debugging and secure or remove logs that are no longer needed.
If the error returns immediately, send the new timestamp and exact text to the host rather than repeatedly repairing tables or deleting WordPress content.
Fixes that can make the incident worse
- Editing database credentials to create space:
wp-config.phpcontrols connection settings; changing it cannot increase server storage. - Repairing tables as a default response: table repair addresses different database problems and can require additional temporary space. Back up first and use it only when the host or a qualified administrator identifies corruption.
- Displaying verbose errors publicly: use logging with display disabled instead of exposing paths and queries to visitors.
- Deleting random plugins, uploads, or posts: this can destroy recoverable content without touching the exhausted server resource.
- Installing generic cleanup or repair software: desktop cleaners and unverified database tools do not give a WordPress administrator control over a host’s quota, temporary directory, or MySQL filesystem.
When the host says storage is normal
Provide the provider with the exact MySQL text and timestamps and ask it to check connection limits, credentials, database availability, permissions, and recent server events. “Error establishing a database connection” is broader than the disk-full condition, so a normal storage reading does not rule out another host-side or configuration problem.
Bottom line
Treat a confirmed MySQL disk-full message as a hosting incident. Preserve a complete recovery path, use Site Health and carefully protected logs for context, and let the hosting provider verify and correct the quota, filesystem, temporary-directory, or cache condition. WordPress configuration changes alone cannot repair an exhausted database server.
