The seven options below are a curated shortlist from the WordPress.org admin-theme category, not a definitive ranking. Their directory descriptions emphasize different jobs: simplified styling, color and logo customization, dark mode, broad interface changes, and WooCommerce order management.
What a WordPress admin theme changes
These plugins customize the back end you use while logged in: menus, dashboards, colors, branding, or—in one case—WooCommerce order navigation. They do not redesign your site’s public pages. Installations, compatibility labels, and update information can change, so check each current WordPress.org listing before installing. A “tested with” label is publisher-supplied metadata, not independent testing.

The seven plugins
UiPress Lite: broad dashboard customization
WordPress.org describes UiPress Lite as a plugin for custom WordPress admin dashboards. That makes it a logical first listing to inspect when you want more than a single color or dark-mode switch. The Lite listing should be treated on its own terms; paid uiXpress features should not be assumed to be included. Verify the current feature list, update history, and compatibility details before choosing it.

#1 Best Overall

Slate Admin Theme: a cleaner, simpler back end
Slate is described as “A clean, simplified WordPress Admin theme.” Choose it when reducing visual clutter is your main objective rather than adding a specialized workflow. Its roughly 6,000 active installations in the snapshot indicate directory usage, but do not establish quality or current maintenance.
WpRedesigned: a general visual refresh
The directory describes WpRedesigned as a way to beautify the WordPress admin. That supports considering it for a broad appearance change, but the short description does not establish a complete feature set, role controls, or maintenance practices. Read the current listing before relying on any specific capability.
Rank #2
Aquila Admin Theme: Material-inspired colors and logo
Aquila is presented as a Material Design-inspired admin theme with a customizable color scheme and support for a custom logo. It is the clearest fit here if dashboard branding and color control matter. Confirm how those settings interact with your current WordPress version and other administration plugins.
Dark Mode for WP Dashboard: when dark appearance is the requirement
This plugin is described as a clean, lightweight dark-mode plugin for the WordPress admin dashboard. Consider it when the primary requirement is a dark interface. “Lightweight” is the directory’s wording, not an independently measured performance result, so do not select it on an assumed speed benefit.
Rank #3
Fancy Admin UI: a customizable blue treatment
Fancy Admin UI focuses on a customizable blue theme for the WordPress admin panel and admin bar. It may suit an installation where that specific visual style is desirable. Its approximately 1,000 active installations are only a snapshot signal; inspect the current listing for compatibility and recent updates.
Dashify: specialized WooCommerce administration
Dashify is the most specialized choice in this group. WordPress.org describes a modern admin interface for WooCommerce, with emphasis on managing, searching, and navigating orders. It is worth examining for a store team whose main pain point is order administration, but confirm compatibility with your WooCommerce version and existing workflow before deployment.

How to choose among them
Need a broad interface change?
Compare UiPress Lite, WpRedesigned, and Fancy Admin UI using their current listings. Their directory summaries point to general visual customization, but they do not provide enough evidence to declare a winner or guarantee a particular control.
Want a cleaner or darker screen?
Slate is the direct match for simplification. Dark Mode for WP Dashboard is the direct match for a dark appearance. Choose between them based on the visual outcome you actually want rather than installation counts.
Need branding controls?
Aquila has the clearest stated support for a customizable color scheme and custom logo, making it the natural starting point for a branded dashboard.
Run WooCommerce orders from the dashboard?
Start with Dashify because its stated purpose is WooCommerce order management. Treat compatibility with your particular store setup as a check to perform, not an assumption.

- Open the plugin’s current WordPress.org listing and confirm that it is available for your WordPress version.
- Read the latest update date, support activity, and current “tested with” information.
- Compare the actual free feature list with any Pro or premium feature labels; free and paid boundaries differ between products.
- Test on a staging copy first if the dashboard is used by multiple editors, administrators, or store staff.
- Check for overlap with existing white-label, role-management, menu-editor, dark-mode, or WooCommerce administration plugins.
Free does not always mean every dashboard feature is included
Ultimate Dashboard is a related dashboard-customization plugin, not one of the seven choices above. Its vendor describes free features such as removing and creating widgets, customizing the login, changing the welcome panel, adding custom CSS, setting login redirects, and creating custom admin pages. The vendor marks white labeling, role-based access, dark mode, admin menu and admin-bar editing, and multisite support as Pro capabilities. Check the vendor’s current feature page before using those details to compare plans.
Similarly, vendor-authored comparisons—such as uiXpress material comparing itself with Adminify, White Label CMS, and Ultimate Dashboard—should be read as marketing comparisons, not independent testing. Verify pricing and feature claims on each product’s current site.
What the directory numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The September 2026 snapshot showed about 6,000 installations each for UiPress Lite and Slate, about 4,000 for WpRedesigned, about 3,000 each for Aquila and Dark Mode for WP Dashboard, about 1,000 for Fancy Admin UI, and 900-plus for Dashify. These volatile counters can help you understand the relative size of the listed user base at that moment, but they do not measure security, support quality, performance, or compatibility. Use the current listing’s version, update, support, and compatibility information to make that judgment.
