WordPress 6.8, code-named “Cecil,” launched on April 15, 2025. Its notable changes include speculative loading for potentially faster navigation, bcrypt password hashing, accessibility and Block Editor improvements, and performance work across core components. The official release material does not identify a set of third-party plugins as 6.8 highlights: plugin authors should test their products and update compatibility metadata, while site owners should treat that metadata as the author’s declaration—not independent certification.
What changed in WordPress 6.8?
The release combines changes that work automatically for site owners with improvements that matter to editors and developers. WordPress described 100+ accessibility fixes and enhancements and 70+ Block Editor improvements; these are WordPress.org’s release counts, not an independent audit or a measure of outcomes for every site. The accessibility work touched bundled themes, navigation menu management, the Customizer, and labeling. Editor work included blocks, DataViews, and the editing experience. How speculative loading works
Speculative loading lets WordPress prepare a likely next page before a visitor navigates to it. On supported modern browsers, hovering over or clicking a link can trigger preloading, which may make navigation feel faster. Older browsers ignore the feature without affecting normal browsing.
Whether preloading helps depends on factors such as visitor behavior, browser support, and the site itself. WordPress says the behavior can be controlled through a plugin or custom code; the release announcement does not prescribe a particular plugin. The March 4, 2025 beta announcement mentioned Chrome 108+ and Edge 108+ as browsers to test at that time. That was beta-era guidance, not a current compatibility matrix.

What changed for passwords and security?
WordPress 6.8 uses bcrypt for password hashing, increasing the computational effort needed to crack password hashes. The release says the change is automatic: “You don’t need to do anything—everything updates automatically.” This refers to the bcrypt change and does not require users to alter their normal workflow. The announcement also mentions other encryption improvements but does not detail them, so no more specific technical claims about those improvements are established here.
What performance improvements should site owners expect?
Alongside speculative loading, WordPress identified work involving the Block Editor, block type registration, query caching, and the Interactivity API. These are areas of performance work, not a published universal benchmark: the release material does not establish a fixed speed improvement for every WordPress site. Evaluate your own site if you need to know whether a change improves its real-world performance.

Are there official plugin highlights for WordPress 6.8?
No named third-party plugins are established as official 6.8 highlights by the release and developer material covered here. The supported plugin takeaway is about compatibility preparation: WordPress advises plugin authors to test with 6.8 and update the Tested up to value in readme.txt. The April 2025 WordPress Developer Blog roundup describes that guidance.
A plugin’s Tested up to entry is a statement from its author. It can help users judge whether the author has reported testing against a release, but it is not independent certification and cannot guarantee compatibility with every site configuration. Plugin authors should test their products; site owners should check their own essential plugins and workflows after updating.

Which WordPress 6.8 version should you run?
WordPress 6.8 was followed by maintenance releases. WordPress 6.8.1, released April 30, 2025, fixed 15 bugs in Core and the Block Editor, including issues affecting the editor, multisite, and REST API. Version 6.8.2, released July 15, 2025, included fixes for 20 Core tickets and 15 Block Editor issues. WordPress 6.8.3, announced September 30, 2025, was a security release with two fixes, and WordPress recommended updating immediately. These are counts stated in the respective announcements, not external quality or performance measurements.
