First, identify what you are trying to arrange
“Widgets in columns” can describe two different layouts. The right method depends on both the content and where it belongs.

How to put content side by side with the Columns block
The Columns block is the simplest built-in way to create a visual multi-column layout. It accepts blocks, so each column can contain text, images, headings, buttons, or a combination of them. It does not automatically collect classic widgets from the Widgets screen and convert them into columns.
- Open the page or post. Edit the content where the side-by-side layout should appear.
- Insert a Columns block. Add a new block and search for Columns, or type
/columnsin a new paragraph block. - Choose a starting layout. Select equal-width columns or an uneven variation. You can also start with the default layout and adjust it later.
- Fill each column. Insert the blocks required for each item—for example, an image, heading, paragraph, and button in each repeated card.
- Adjust the layout. Select the Columns block and change the number or arrangement of columns in its block settings when necessary.
- Check smaller screens. Preview the page on a narrow display and confirm that the columns stack in a sensible reading order.
Example: a two-column feature section
Add one Columns block with two columns. Put an image and heading in the first column, then a separate image and heading in the second. Add descriptive paragraphs and buttons beneath the corresponding headings. This creates a page-level layout without changing the site’s sidebar or footer.

How to arrange classic widgets in a sidebar or footer
Classic themes define widget areas such as a sidebar, footer, or other theme-specific regions. These areas determine where widgets can appear; the available names and locations vary by the active theme.
- Confirm the theme type. A classic theme must provide widget areas.
- Open the widget screen. Go to Appearance > Widgets, or open Appearance > Customize > Widgets if the Customizer supplies that route.
- Choose a theme area. Inspect the available sidebar, footer, and other regions.
- Add and reorder items. Place widgets in the selected area and drag or otherwise reorder them as the editor permits.
- Use blocks alongside widgets when available. In the block-based Widgets editor, add ordinary blocks directly to the area. For an older classic or third-party widget, select a Legacy Widget block.
The Widgets screen organizes items within theme-defined areas. WordPress does not provide one universal control there that turns arbitrary existing widgets into a multi-column grid. If a widget must remain a classic widget, check whether the theme or that widget offers its own layout setting. Otherwise, create the visual grid with a Columns block or a theme layout feature.

What changes with a block theme?
Block themes use the Site Editor and block-based templates rather than the traditional widget-area workflow. Open Appearance > Editor to edit templates and template parts, then place blocks in the site areas supplied by the theme. You may not see Appearance > Widgets or the Customizer’s Widgets section in the same form.
For a block theme, use a Columns block inside the relevant template or template part when you need a sidebar- or footer-style arrangement. The exact available template parts depend on the theme.

Can the Columns block contain a classic widget?
The Columns block is designed for blocks. It does not automatically import a widget from the Widgets screen. A compatible classic theme may let you place blocks and widgets together in a widget area through the block-based Widgets editor, with a Legacy Widget block preserving access to an existing classic widget. That is different from placing the widget inside a page-level Columns block.
Choosing the correct workflow
- Page or post content: use the Columns block.
- Site-wide sidebar or footer on a classic theme: use the theme’s widget area, then add or reorder widgets there.
- Classic widget plus newer blocks: use the block-based Widgets editor and a Legacy Widget block where needed.
- Block theme: edit the appropriate template or template part in the Site Editor and build the layout with blocks.
- Need a grid of actual legacy widgets: first check the theme or widget for layout controls; WordPress has no universal automatic conversion to columns.
Developer option: display a widget in a template
When building a custom theme or template, developers can use WordPress’s documented the_widget() function to render a widget programmatically. This is a template-development route, not a universal editor control, and the function alone does not define a multi-column layout. The surrounding template must provide the layout structure.

Troubleshooting common problems
There is no Appearance > Widgets menu
The active theme may be a block theme. Open Appearance > Editor and edit the relevant template or template part with blocks.
The sidebar or footer is missing
Classic themes only expose the widget areas they define, and block themes may use different template parts. Check the active theme’s available areas rather than assuming every site has the same sidebar or footer.

An old widget cannot be edited as a normal block
In a compatible classic theme’s block-based Widgets editor, add or select a Legacy Widget block. It provides a compatibility route for classic and third-party widgets that have not been converted to blocks.
The columns look cramped on phones
Preview the page at a narrow width and revise the number of columns, the content length, or the stacking order. A layout that is balanced on a desktop screen may be difficult to scan when columns become narrow.
