Yoast SEO helps you configure WordPress search settings and review individual pages before publishing. A useful first session is: install the plugin, complete First-time configuration, check site-wide features, then edit one real post and use the SEO and readability panels as editorial guidance. The colored indicators are recommendations, not ranking guarantees.

What Yoast SEO does (and does not do)

Yoast SEO adds global settings plus controls on posts, pages and taxonomies. It can help search engines discover URLs through an XML sitemap, describe your site and content with structured data, and give writing feedback while you edit. It cannot promise a position in Google or make weak content useful by itself.

Think of the plugin as two connected layers:

  • Site-wide configuration: identity, social profiles, sitemap, schema, archives and other technical defaults.
  • Content-level editing: a focus keyphrase, search appearance fields, SEO analysis and readability analysis for a specific post or page.

Keep those layers separate when troubleshooting. A green post indicator does not mean a global setting is correct, and a technically correct sitemap does not make every article well written.

Before you install

  • Have administrator access to the WordPress dashboard.
  • Know whether the site represents a person or an organization; this choice affects the structured data Yoast generates.
  • Prepare the site name, optional alternate name, tagline, preferred title separator, site image and relevant social profile URLs.
  • Decide which content types should be publicly indexable. Do not expose private, duplicate or utility pages merely to increase a page count.

Install and activate Yoast SEO

Dashboard installation

  1. Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add Plugin.
  2. Search for Yoast SEO. Confirm that the result is the official plugin before installing.
  3. Select Install Now, wait for the installation to finish, then select Activate.
  4. Open the new Yoast SEO menu and start configuration. Yoast’s installation guide describes the next step plainly: “You can now go and configure the plugin.”

Manual ZIP installation

If your host or network does not allow dashboard installation, download the plugin ZIP from Yoast, then go to Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin. Choose the ZIP, select Install Now, and activate it after WordPress reports a successful upload. Do not unzip it into an arbitrary media folder; WordPress must install it as a plugin.

Complete First-time configuration

Open Yoast SEO and launch First-time configuration. Work through each screen rather than accepting guesses.

SEO data optimization

Yoast inspects indexable objects and builds the data it needs for its features. On a site with a large amount of content this can take time. Leave the process running and avoid repeatedly starting it if the dashboard appears busy.

Site representation

Select whether the site represents a Person or an Organization. Enter the appropriate name and image or logo information. Yoast uses these details in the structured data it generates, so use the public identity visitors should associate with the site.

Social profiles

Add profiles that genuinely belong to the person or organization. Remove example values and do not add profiles that you do not control. These settings provide context for social metadata; they do not create social accounts or guarantee how every network will render a link.

Personal preferences and completion

Review the remaining preference and usage choices, save the configuration, and return to the Yoast dashboard. If a task list or alert center appears, treat it as a checklist—not an instruction to change every setting immediately.

Set the site basics

In Yoast’s settings, review the fields for site name, alternate name, tagline, title separator and site image. Use the name people recognize, not a string of keywords. A concise tagline can clarify the publication’s subject, while an empty or misleading tagline is better removed than padded.

The title separator is a formatting choice used when Yoast combines a page title with the site name. Choose one style and keep it consistent. The site image should be a suitable brand or identity image at the dimensions and file size your WordPress media workflow supports.

Review site-wide features

Go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features. Names and availability can differ by plugin edition, so check the labels shown in your own installation.

Feature What it is for Beginner action
SEO analysis Checks content-level SEO factors such as keyphrase use and links. Leave enabled if you want feedback in the editor.
Readability analysis Reviews writing characteristics including transition words, passive voice, sentence length and word length. Leave enabled while learning the editing workflow.
XML sitemaps Produces an XML list of indexable URLs for search-engine discovery. Keep Yoast’s sitemap feature enabled unless you have a documented reason not to.
Schema Framework Describes the site and its content in machine-readable form. Keep the defaults until you understand a specific change.
Internal-link suggestions Suggests related internal pages while editing. Check whether your installation marks it Premium before looking for it.
IndexNow Submits change notifications to supported search engines. Check edition availability; Yoast identifies it as Premium.
Crawl optimization Offers additional crawl-control options. Leave it alone unless needed; the Advanced settings documentation marks it Premium.

WordPress also has a built-in sitemap. Yoast recommends its own sitemap feature and says enabling it disables the default WordPress sitemap while providing the Yoast version. Avoid running competing sitemap systems that publish conflicting URL sets.

Optimize your first post

Open the Yoast panel

  1. Create or edit a post in Posts → Add New (or open an existing post).
  2. Open the Yoast sidebar or panel in the editor. If it is hidden, use the editor’s sidebar controls to display it.
  3. Enter one natural focus keyphrase that describes the query the page actually answers. Do not list every synonym you can imagine.

Use SEO analysis as a checklist

Read each recommendation and inspect the sentence or section it refers to. Typical checks include whether the keyphrase appears in important locations, whether the page contains useful internal and outbound links, and whether the wording is clear. Apply a change when it improves the page; ignore a suggestion when following it would make the text awkward, repetitive or less accurate.

For example, if the keyphrase is “WordPress backup schedule,” explain how often to back up and link to your own setup guide. Do not force the exact phrase into every heading or paragraph. Yoast is evaluating signals, not judging the reader’s intent as a human editor would.

Use readability analysis without flattening your voice

Readability checks can flag long sentences, passive voice, word length and missing transition words. Break genuinely overloaded sentences, put the actor before the verb when that is clearer, and add transitions where ideas need a logical bridge. Technical subjects still require precise terms; replacing every specialized word with a shorter but inaccurate one is not an improvement.

Search appearance and the page itself

Write a specific SEO title and meta description that accurately summarize the page. Keep the promise aligned with the visible heading and body. A compelling snippet may improve a searcher’s decision to click, but Yoast cannot force a search engine to display your exact text.

Before publishing, verify the URL, one clear main heading, descriptive subheadings, useful images with appropriate alternative text, and links that work. Preview the page on a narrow screen as well as a desktop layout.

Understand advanced settings before changing them

The Advanced area includes schema details, breadcrumbs, author/date/format archive controls, special pages, media pages and RSS settings. Change one related group at a time and record the previous value so you can reverse it.

Archives and media pages

Author, date and format archives can be useful on a publication with a deliberate archive structure, but they can also create thin or duplicative pages. Decide based on how visitors use your site, not on a desire to expose every automatically generated URL.

Breadcrumbs and schema

Breadcrumbs can clarify hierarchy when your theme displays them consistently. Schema settings describe entities and relationships; they are not a promise of a rich result. Keep defaults unless you can explain what a change represents on the actual page.

RSS and special pages

Review RSS text and special-page behavior if you syndicate content or use custom search and error pages. Avoid copying unfamiliar snippets into these fields without understanding where WordPress will output them.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Yoast menu or panel is missing

Confirm the plugin is activated and that your account has the required capability. In the block editor, open the sidebar controls and enable the Yoast panel. A theme or another plugin can also hide editor panels; temporarily test with a staging copy before disabling anything on a live site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SEO analysis shows no keyphrase results

Enter a focus keyphrase in the Yoast panel and save the draft. If the analysis remains empty, check for JavaScript errors, caching that serves an old editor bundle, or a plugin conflict. Clear the relevant cache and test with other editor extensions disabled.

SEO data optimization seems stuck

Large sites can take longer because Yoast is inspecting many indexable objects. Keep the browser tab open, check server resource limits and review the WordPress error log. Do not repeatedly launch the process; ask your host to investigate timeouts if it never completes.

The sitemap contains an unwanted URL

Identify which content type or archive generated it, then adjust that content’s visibility or the corresponding Yoast setting. Purge caches and inspect the sitemap again. Do not edit the XML file directly; it will be regenerated.

A green indicator conflicts with an editor’s judgment

Trust the page’s purpose, factual accuracy and reader comprehension first. The analysis is a heuristic checklist. Document why you intentionally ignored a suggestion so a future editor understands the decision.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean image of a Yoast documentation page, a WordPress preview or any other URL, ScreenshotNeo can return it with one API request. The service accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Read the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://yoast.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://yoast.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://yoast.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Beyond a basic shot, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page lazy-image capture, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, waits, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.
