Block themes use Appearance > Editor > Navigation and a Navigation block; classic and hybrid themes commonly use Appearance > Menus. In either case, build the link structure first, set the menu’s layout to vertical where that control is available, place it in the correct site location, then save and test desktop and mobile views.
Choose the correct WordPress menu workflow
Check the active theme before editing anything. The Site Editor is available only when a block theme is active. Classic or hybrid themes may instead provide the Appearance Menus screen.

If you cannot find one of these screens, do not assume the menu feature is missing. The active theme determines which editor and placement options are available.
Create a vertical menu with a block theme
1. Open Site Editor navigation
- Go to Appearance > Editor.
- Open Navigation to create a menu or edit an existing one.
- Select an existing menu, or choose the option to create a new menu.
When a Navigation block is first inserted, it may show a Page List containing published pages. Choosing Edit converts that list into individual Page Link blocks. After conversion, pages published later are not automatically added to that menu. See the current Navigation block documentation for the editor’s available controls.

2. Add and organize links
- Add pages, posts, custom links, or other link types offered by the editor.
- Edit each link’s visible label and destination as needed.
- Reorder items with the block toolbar or List View.
- For a nested section, select a menu item and choose Add submenu, then add links beneath it. The Submenu block documentation explains the submenu structure.
Vertical orientation controls the arrangement of the menu; it does not create the links or determine their hierarchy. Finish the structure before changing its layout.
3. Set the Navigation block to vertical
- Open the template or template part containing the Navigation block, or insert a Navigation block where the menu should appear.
- Select the Navigation block.
- Open its Styles or Layout controls.
- Set the orientation to Vertical.
The exact control presentation can vary by WordPress release, theme, and editor context. The vertical setting stacks the child menu items instead of laying them out in a row. WordPress describes related layout controls in its Layout Settings overview.
4. Connect the menu and place it on the site
A menu created in Site Editor navigation does not automatically appear on the front end. Add or select a Navigation block in the intended template part—often a Header—and choose the menu you created. Save the template or template part, then save the navigation changes. The Site Editor navigation guide covers this connection between a saved menu and a Navigation block.

Create a vertical menu with a classic or hybrid theme
1. Open Appearance > Menus
Go to Appearance > Menus. Create a new menu or select an existing one, then add pages, custom links, and other available items.
2. Build the menu hierarchy
- Drag items into the order in which they should appear.
- Indent an item beneath another to make it a submenu.
- Open an item’s settings to change its navigation label or URL.
- Save the menu.
3. Assign a theme location
Use the menu-location section to assign the menu to one of the locations exposed by your theme, such as a primary or sidebar location. The theme decides which locations exist and where they render; the names and visual results are not universal. Save the assignment and inspect the front end.
Classic menu screens do not always provide a universal orientation switch. A theme may render its assigned location vertically by default, expose its own setting, or require theme-specific styling. Do not expect the block editor’s Vertical control to appear in every classic theme.

Place a vertical menu in a sidebar or widget area
Classic themes that provide widget areas can use the block-based Widgets Editor to add a Navigation block or other menu-related block to a sidebar. The Block-based Widgets Editor documentation describes this route.
Block themes do not use traditional widget areas. They use Site Editor templates, template parts, and patterns instead. For a block theme, place the Navigation block in the relevant template part rather than searching for a classic widget panel.

Choose when the menu collapses
The Navigation block provides overlay choices such as Mobile or Always. These determine when the menu changes to an overlay-style control rather than remaining expanded. A menu that is vertical on desktop can still collapse on narrow screens, depending on this setting and the theme.

Choose a submenu trigger
Review the submenu visibility option for hover or click, and decide whether submenu arrows should be shown. Click behavior is generally easier to operate on touch screens, while hover can expose nested links immediately on pointer devices. Verify the actual result because theme styles and scripts affect spacing, contrast, and interaction.
Preview both wide and narrow layouts
- Save the Navigation block, template part, or classic menu assignment.
- Preview the site at a desktop width.
- Resize to a narrow width or use the editor’s mobile preview.
- Open every submenu and test keyboard focus, links, and the mobile overlay.
Troubleshoot a vertical menu that is not appearing correctly
The menu is vertical in the editor but missing from the site
With a block theme, confirm that the Navigation block was added to the template or template part actually used by the page and that it is connected to the intended menu. Save both the menu and the template part. With a classic theme, verify that the menu is assigned to a location the current theme renders.
The Navigation or Site Editor option is missing
Check the active theme. Site Editor navigation requires a block theme; a classic or hybrid theme may instead expose Appearance > Menus. Theme changes can also change available locations and templates.

New pages do not appear automatically
If a Page List was converted to individual Page Link blocks, later published pages are not automatically inserted. Add the new page link manually or review whether the menu should use the page-list behavior instead.
A submenu will not open on a phone
Inspect the Navigation block’s submenu visibility setting, test click behavior, and check whether the mobile overlay is enabled. Confirm that submenu arrows are visible if users need an explicit control, then test at the actual narrow width used by visitors.
The classic menu still displays in a row
Classic themes control the markup and styling of their menu locations. Check the theme’s customizer or menu settings for an orientation option and confirm that the menu is assigned to a location intended for a sidebar or vertical display. If the theme offers no such control, its documentation or support is the authoritative source for theme-specific styling.
Final checklist
- You used the editor that matches the active theme.
- Every link has the correct label and destination.
- Submenus are indented and ordered correctly.
- The Navigation block is set to vertical where that control is available.
- The block-theme menu is connected to the correct template part, or the classic menu is assigned to a supported location.
- Mobile overlay, submenu trigger, and arrow settings work at narrow widths.
- You saved changes and tested the live front-end result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a WordPress menu vertical without a plugin?
Yes. Block themes provide vertical orientation in the Navigation block. Classic themes may render menu locations vertically or provide their own theme setting; a plugin is not inherently required.

Why do I not see Appearance > Menus?
Your active block theme may use Site Editor navigation instead. Open Appearance > Editor > Navigation and place the menu through a Navigation block in the relevant template part.
Does a vertical menu automatically appear in the header?
No. In a block theme, connect the saved menu to a Navigation block in the header or another template part. In a classic theme, assign it to a theme-supported location.
